In my
last blog, I said all 2008 and 2009 basic game data is complete in our database. Now I can say we've done the same for 2007. So any game released after 2006 that is listed in our database has a developer, publisher, release date, and genre.
This is part of continued efforts to improve our database and fill it out with complete and reliable information. I know you can find this information elsewhere, but I take pride in being a perfectionist. For many games (mainly older or obscure ones), I've searched across many sites to find the right information. This means that hopefully GAF is a resource that combines the knowledge of Wikipedia, Mobygames.com, Gamefaqs.com, Allgame.com, Klov.com, etc.
We do still have a long way to go though. I'm glad we've got the basics done for games after 2006 because we have now covered all games for the current generation. But we still are missing some games completely, especially on the downloadable front (WiiWare, XBLA, etc.). And for games already in the system, we have roughly 16000 that need basic info. We have 26000 in the database, so that means 38% of the games have basic info.
In my
last blog, I talked about some of the progress we've made on the GAF database. I've got a few more updates now.
First, all games that have been voted on now have release dates, developer, publisher, and genre. In addition, all games released from 1/1/2008 until now have the same information. If you find anything missing, please let us know, especially for upcoming games.
Our goal from here on out is to keep the database up to date with current goings-on. Long term, we'd like all games to have complete data with screenshots and box art and video, but one thing at a time.
Even with GAF not having a lot of new articles go up, our games database is still a valuable resource. Sure, there are other places to get almost all the information we have, but we don't mind. We like to do things our way and will continue to do so. Here are a few landmarks with noting:
- We are probably missing a few 2009 games, but all 2009 games in our database have a release date, developer, publisher, and genre.
- We are approaching the same milestone for all 2008 games as well
- As of this writing, we have less than 14,000 games without a developer or publisher assigned to them.
I hope you all find the GAF database valuable.
For this E3, it's mostly just me doing work for GAF. I haven't put in a great deal of effort getting new staff just for E3, though there are a few people I'm considering to be staff here at GAF.
So with that in mind, my goal for E3 is a simple one: get more traffic than we had going into it. I don't care if it's just a few more people than we had before as long as it's some people that liked our coverage and want to stick around. We don't have any stockholders or corporate fat cats to answer to at GAF, only me. And I'm happy just doing GAF, whether it's got 100,000 visits a day or only 1,000 visits a day.
So our strategy is to pick out things we think are interesting and get them on the front page. We won't have everything. We certainly won't have all the trailers and screenshots. But we hope it'll be things you also find interesting.
One thing that hasn't worked for a while (sorry folks) is denying friend requests. Every once in a while, you may get a friend request from somebody you don't know. And before today, you could only ignore that the request was sitting there begging for your attention, not deny it.
Now you can deny it. If there are any other bugs infesting this beautiful site, please let me know and I'll get them squashed.
