Square Enix released recently some new screens from its upcoming PlayStation 2 role-playing game remake,
Dragon Quest V. Artepiazza, a 25-member team headed up by
Dragon Quest VII art director Shintaro Majima, will handle the development. Majima will remain in that role for
DQV, and the "big three" at Armor Project - Yuji Horii (scenario), Akira Toriyama (character designs), Koichi Sugiyama (music) - will lend their talents, as usual.
As the images below indicate,
DQV is rendered completely in 3D. Square Enix isn't just stopping with superficial additions, however, as it was confirmed in this week's issue of
Famitsu that Artepiazza will be upping the number of playable characters in battle from three to four. This change means a lot of retooling for the
DQV team, but if they manage to pull it off successfully, the enhanced battles could add several new layers of depth and balance to the game.
Enix released
Dragon Quest V for the Super Famicom (Japan's Super Nintendo) in 1992, but it, unfortunately, never made the journey across the Pacific. At the time,
DQV might have carried a lot of weight for the state of RPGs in North America, as its enhancements to story and gameplay were rather compelling at the time. In fact, they stand up remarkably well even today, as lucky folks who got their hands on a copy still stand by its quality. Considering this, we look towards Square Enix with confidence that they'll release the PlayStation 2 version in North America.
Dragon Quest V will land on Japanese store shelves this coming Spring.
