News - PSP defects reported

Posted by Samuel Altersitz at 03:10:58 PM EST on 12.13.2004.

Reports are coming in that the initial shipment of PSP units is seeing some defective units getting to the public.

These defects include:

  • Dead pixels, as many as 3 per screen with the problem.
  • Broken UMD drives.
  • Analog nubs not working.

Sony has yet to make any official announcement about any of these issues, and about how users with any of these problems can recitfy them.

Be sure to check back for Sony's response to these issues.

    UPDATE: More problems ahoy!

  • Analog nubs not just not working, but actually falling off.
  • PSP is turned on, but does not start up.
  • Screen has air bubbles.
  • Screen has dust on the inside.

Also, as for the UMD drive problems, some have reported the drive not closing completely, and the UMD, when the PSP is twisted, actually flies out!

Most retailers are stressing the fact that these problems don't occur in the majority of PSPs, but take caution in importing until Sony gives an official announcement.

    UPDATE 2

Video of UMD popping out when unit is turned/twisted (Quicktime, 40KB).

    UPDATE 3

Larger size movies of the same UMD problem!

Video 2 of UMD popping out when unit is turned/twisted (Quicktime, 1.2MB).
Video 3 of UMD popping out when unit is turned/twisted (Quicktime, 1.2MB).

Movie of PSP turned on, nothing happens (Quicktime, 335KB).

Image of why Square button does not work right, it is off center from the contact it has to touch within the PSP (click for larger pic). Thanks to user "Soniota" for pointing this pic out to us, and thanks to Asahi-net.or.jp for the pic and videos in this update:

Soniota is correct. After talking to a friend of mine who lives in Tokyo for confirmation, the pic below does indeed show the left side as translated to me, in her exact words: "that first one is...genbutsu...means the actual article the second means:..ahmm...holon...ahh the way you have to have it from the origin...or u have to keep it like that way it was or u had it" In other words, the right is what the circuit board for the buttons is supposed to look like, but the left is the actual look of the board of the production unit taken apart.

What a pathetic argument against the PSP... It wasn't intended to be Twisted FFS! Are you people stupid, Its like saying paper is useless because when i set fire to it it burns into ashes.

And the argument about stuck pixels, YOU CANT EVEN SEE STUCK PIXELS UNLESS ITS ON A VERY DARK SCREEN LIKE A LOADING SCREEN!

Idiotic fanboys...you can like a DS and maybe prefer it to the PSP but please dont waste your time coming up with pathetic arguments saying its defective.

The PSP owns, and the reason for the screens dead pixels is because the crumm us screens are made by SAMSUNG and the japanese/UK ones (when they come out over here) will have SHARP screens. so there and as for the "twisting eject" problem, just dont twist it, DUMBASS...

I preordered mine at Gamestation same as with my DS

to all the f***ers telling everyone to stop complaning about the defects on the psp(sonyfreak) can suck a fatty! if someone is paying 200 dollars out of the ass for this, they should be f***ing satisfied with their product. for 200 dollars (more for the packs) the customer should not have to settle for nething. i dont thing neone is reporting these defects simply because they're f***ing nintendo fans, but because theres f***ing defects. good thing i held off on buying one right away

For those that think this issue is isolated to a few PSPs I have some info. I exchanged five PSPs at Best Buy today for physical defects. That is not isolated. I finally gave up and got a refund. I also went to the local GameStop and inquired. They've had more than half of their stock returned for defects. They also said they aren't accepting returns for bad pixels, because Sony isn't accepting RMAs for bad pixels. I recommend waiting for the second batch if you're going to get one. If you got a good one then count yourself lucky. I was shocked after opening five boxes only to find scratched or distorted faceplates, not to mention dead pixels. The only one I opened that didn't have dead pixels was scratched all to hell under the faceplate.

ok i reserved this system and i think anyone who hates it is full of S***. If they dont like it so much its probebly because they are scared sony is better than Nintendo (this statement is true) So all you sony haters can stop waysting my time and go play with your stupid BS(ds). So it has some defects well thats ok with me because by the time it reaches the west coast it'll be defect free.
So more to the point... Sony haters can kiss my A**

Note: I am not a Nintendo Fanboy!
Well gee, what else is new? Sony screwing up again! Why did Sony have to go and try to take Nintendo's throne in the handheld market? After seeing these videos and Articles there is NO WAY i am ever getting one, I am really curious to hear about PSPs battery life though... Nintendo continues to Dominate the handheld industry with its new Inovative Touch screen, and it seems all PSP has going for it at the moment is good graphics and all these Defects! When i heared sony was making a handheld i expected nothing less...

Hi ps. At first the flaw was reported as unintentional ejection while playing RidgeRacers, and someone found out that in some unit the ejection occurs when adding twisting stress on the body, for instance, pushing "up" button and "circle" button simultaneously.

The shell lacks enough members to stand with the twisting stress and UMD shutter has only one nail, so sometimes intentional/unintentional twist --- or touch --- might let UMD discs pop out.

But in most situation it's not serious problem, cuz you can resume the game by simply re-inserting the UMD disc, unless you're battling with your friend in real-time. And some reports that the newer PSP unit has a bit improved nail part and seems more twist-resistant.

I'm no Sony fanboy, but even considering Half Life 2, the DS and everything else that has come out this year, the PSP has got me the most excited now that it's in my hands. And I've had no problems.
And I don't see how wnyone could call the PSP overpriced, that's just clueless.

FYI, creaking noise and button-stucking has reported not only in square button, but right trigger of "+" key and "L" button placed upside the body. Someone discovered another oddity in PSP's hardware design, as "L" button and "R" button is in reality not symmetrical in their assembly parts. While "R" button is constituted by a rubber membrane, white reinforcement part and the button trigger itself, "L" button lacks the white part. I'm not yet sure if this asymmetry explains the different feeling between "L/R" buttons and the "L" button's jerky movement in some units.

Now we're guessing the reason why they made a round cutting on the LCD mount sponge, and some of us concluded that uncutted sponge might interfere the intended movement of square button or reduce pushing margin.

Hi Samuel, those pics aren't fake at all! Two Japanese notes in second pic means "actual circuit pattern" and "appropriate design", from left to right. If you doubt me, please confirm this is real thing at these URLs.
    http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/2004/1212/psp.htm
    http://www.lik-sang.com/psp.html

Trustful IT-related publisher "impress" has reported inside-analysis of PSP on their website "PC watch", and still you can find the crippled circuit pattern (of course they never mention about glitch of square button and its primary cause).

...and what's with you Nintendo fanboys. It's not like the Nintendo DS is so awesome. It's a bigger piece of s*** than a defective PSP. If Sony made them actually work like they were supposed to then they'd slaughter any Nintendo product. I might care about the GBA or DS if I was 10 years old...

Sony makes me sick. Every single product they ever made is a flakey overpriced piece of garbage. Have they ever heard of durability? Why can't they improve their manufacturing process! For God's sakes, WHY!? You are a disgrace to your god damn country you stupid Japanese bastards.

Hi, I'm one of Japanese sony-heckler. Among all trouble reports, what most frightened (er, in reality, amused) us is that the "strange offset" discovered between "square" button and its switch pattern below the button. Obviously it connotes some unusual things had happen in their development or production process. For instance, see pics below:

    http://sylphys.ddo.jp/upld2nd/game/img-box/img20041213143737.jpg
    http://cgi.members.interq.or.jp/hiphop/youhama/up/source/yaguyasu0427.jpg

Many users already reported that square button doesn't be pushed and returned as smoothly as other buttons do (that's natural cuz the button doesn't placed in the right position where the membrane switch-pattern suggests), and sometimes makes a creaking noise. What a heck is this faulty packaging?
