News - Shining Force Neo Famitsu scans, screens, & details

Posted by Josh Freund at 11:09:42 PM EST on 12.22.2004.

The latest issue of Japanese magazine Famitsu reveals some new images of Sega and Amusement Vision's Shining Force Neo, the first this-gen 3D Shining Force game.

Max, from the original Sega Genesis Shining Force, will return in Neo as the main character. The game; however, will be an all-new, 3D title, not a remake. Battles will take place in real-time; the player will control Max, and the rest of the characters in the party will be A.I.-controlled. Also, battles will be initiated just by walking up to an enemy and attacking, like in Kingdom Hearts; there won't be a separate battle screen.

Neo will feature different character classes that change based on the weapons your characters have equipped. There will be four main types of weapons. Equip a one-handed sword and your character will become a swordsman, a two-handed sword to become a warrior, a bow to become an archer, and a staff to become a mage. Each weapon (and subsequent class) will feature different strengths and weaknesses; so you'll have to choose wisely and diversify your party.

With Neo's "Force Frame" system, you can place force art emblems you acquire throughout the game into slots in the force frame to get new powers and abilities. Also, in dungeons, you'll be able to stop monsters from coming by destroying "Monster Gates."

Shining Force Neo is scheduled for a March 25, 2005 release in Japan for Playstation 2. There's no word on a US release yet, unfortunately.

I'm confused about this one. It looks nice, but doesn't sound like a Shining Force title. Real time control of one character? Gonna have to rent this one.

The word "Shining" in the title does not make it a Shining game. Camelot makes it a Shining game, similar gameplay elements (even if a little different from the other games) make it a Shining game, some sort of relation to the previous Shining titles (this game reportedly has nothing to do with anything) make it a Shining game, Sega branding a logo on it does not make it a Shining game.

Force 3 and Holy Ark were 3D, so this definately isn't the first 3D Shining game.

But this is a Shining game, don't forget Shining Soul played much like Shining Wisdoms. And the Golden Sun games were very much like playing Holy Ark in 2D. I can't think of what else to call a midevil RPG (or action adventure) other than Shining Force. Phantasy Star also turned into an action game with PSO, but even if it wasn't "real" it had more impact on gaming than an old style installment of the game would have.

This looks like a Shining Force game... it's called "Shining Force"... therefore, it is a Shining game. You could say the same thing about any other game in series, plus this one has Shining Force elements that other "Shining games" do not! Classes (Shining in the Darkness was lacking) for instance. Even the artwork is similar to the Force games (particular Shining Force 1, which has always had my favorite art style of the series... it was nice to see it again in TimeStalkers..)

Saying this isn't a Shining game is much like saying Final Fantasy Tactics isn't really a Final Fantasy game - BS.

Umm, it's pretty confusing as to what a "Shining title" is. Shining Force is certainly a branch of them, but many other games are included as Shining titles, like the Shining in the Darkness games. This is definately a shining title.

haha, yes beavis, shining force 3 was 3d, not to mention scenarios 1, 2 and 3, all 3d, and, oh yes, how could i forget shining the holy ark? Get it right, sega!

Why do so many "screenshots" never have the menu's and stuff.

Am I the only one who thinks Shining Force 3 counts as 3D?

Anyway, this game is not a Shining game. Sega is merely using the name to move units.
