News - Lunar Genesis for the DS confirmed

In the
Ubisoft 2005 line-up article posted earlier today, a new DS title was revealed named
Lunar Genesis. The press release came from Ubisoft corporate which puts a great deal of credibility on it. But our friends over at
Lunar-NET were not satisfied with a simple mention and went to get further proof.
A simple inquiry to Ubisoft was sent and a confirmation was received.
Lunar Genesis is indeed part of the
Lunar RPG series.
It seemed odd for Ubisoft to reveal all of their surprises for the year in one announcement, so we at GAF are hoping to hear some details on
Lunar Genesis as well as the other newly revealed titles soon.

"Oh and Is this Ubisoft announcing Lunar Genesis for Japanese DS, USA DS or both?
If it doesnt come to the USA, I will cry X-P"
Its a US list, I only know because Lumines was released in Japan last year, yet it's at the top of the list on the announcement.

"What does it mean when they prefer to make a legendary series like Lunar on the DS instead of the PSP though?"
It means that Lunar Genesis will probably have lovely 2D game graphics like all the other Lunars (I HOPE -_-) and is MUCH more likely to be approved for DS than for PSP (Sony probably won't be happy with/approve a lot (or any) 2D games on PSP; it IS trying to promote PSP as a 3D portable system).
Anyway Great news! :-D
BTW, any chance in heck this could be a port of Lunar: Magical School (Game gear/Saturn)?

"Typically, games that're being developed by Japanese companies are revealed through Japanese sources and announced for the Japanese market first."
But also typically a company doesn't reveal all of its unannounced games in a single humdrum press release. Now none of the producers of these games get to organize a big announcement with screenshots which is usually how Ubi does business.

Wow, something actually worthy of dethroning Zelda as the number one news article on the news page! Sweet!!!

Yes we are working off a single line from a press release here. However I do have some reason to believe that it's a Ubi-Soft developed title and not a Japanese one.
Typically, games that're being developed by Japanese companies are revealed through Japanese sources and announced for the Japanese market first.
Which isn't to say Game Arts may not have something to do with the title, Game Arts and Ubi-Soft have worked together in the past. Mostly with Ubi-Soft publishing some of Game Arts games.... though I believe Game Arts eventually moved onto Enix, which may mean that SquareEnix is publishing for them now.
Er, well, that's getting a little off track though. I have concerns, but if its made by Game Arts, then this is a blessed event.

gogo and darknesstear: it is Lunar. That's why we did the article. Ubi Soft confirmed that it is THE Lunar series.

This still doesn't tell us if this is a Lunar series game. It could be something else with the word Lunar in it. Lunar isn't exactly a rare word.

Maybe it's a prequel?
onizuka sensei: The Monolith that did Xenosaga is the Japanese Monolith. I know there's another dev team with the same name.

Has this game even been confirmed as a Lunar title? Last I heard there was no word on exactly WHAT this game is. For all we know, it could be a space shooter or something.

Well i think the Lunar series is a good series that has never really got the attention it deserves and new game or old port to DS would be welcome to get more people interested in the series. Lunar has been popular in hardcore rpg circles in japan and the u.s but has never really made it in u.k/e.u if at all. Some more exposure will be good for the series. I haven't played any of the Lunar series so I will welcome them with an open DS.
I also think it's in good hands with Ubisoft. They might be french but they have respect for japanese games. Also don't forget that Xenosaga 1 and 2 are both french/japanese (Namco and Monolith I think) co-production games and they turned out okay. Have some faith in Ubi.

I hope it is like the second Lunar. The first for sucked ass in my opinion. They should remake lunar Magic School for the DS as well. I can't wait!

wolvenone: nobody said none of the original team members are making it. In fact, for the most part, we are only working off of a single line in a press release. We'll have more info soon hopefully.
generic badass: Dan is sassy to everybody. Don't worry too much about the old timer. He's an SNK fan and you can only keep your cool for so long when it dies and comes back like 400 times.

Dan, no need to get sassy with me. I'm just quoting Victor Ireland (in one of his 73 interviews where Lunar 3 has been discussed) about the Kadokawa part, and yes, I mixed up my "M" companies with the developor of Legends.
No harm intended.

Oh I have great faith in the people behind the original Lunar games, and I feel that there are certain groups that could create a good sequal/prequal.
However, the idea of Ubi-Soft taking over the franchise and making thier own without any of the original team members or whatnot doesn't appeal to me.
Nor does yet another port for that matter. I loved the original games, and the PSX ports, but enough is enough. I'd much rather see an original Lunar title or the beggining of a new franchise then yet another remake/port.

That's true, but wolvenone's point was that he didn't want Lunar 1 again, and all five versions were indeed Lunar 1.

scoville 3.17.2005 at 07:23:01 PM
But of those five versions, only the Playstation and PC ones were ports. The Saturn and Game Boy Lunar's were remakes.

In response to Generic:
Kadakawa only worked on the remakes of the Lunar games. They had nothing to do with the original Mega CD/Sega CD versions of the games nor did they have any role in the Game Gear version of Lunar Walking School. Game Arts Studio Alex developed the original games. Also Media Rings not Marvelous Entertainment developed Lunar Legend. Get your facts straight.

If it was a port/remake of Lunar 2, I wouldn't complain, though "Genesis" would hint at it being a prequel if anything. Perhaps this is about the events that lead Althena to move humanity to Lunar.

drumlord 3.17.2005 at 06:04:43 PM
We're pretty sure this isn't a port as that would be Lunaricide. But to make a small correction, that would be a Sega CD to Saturn to PlayStation to PC to GBA to NDS port. SIX versions would be pushing it juuust a bit.

If this is just a scd to psx to nds port, I hope they fix that bug in the game that made Luna's head and eye bulge all the time in battle.

Game Arts is just a group of programmers they've never had any say in what happens with the Lunar series. Kadokawa Shoten is behind Lunar, and they seem to be content letting Marvelous take care of the handheld games.

wolvenone: Game Arts hasn't done a Lunar game since Lunar: EB on Sega CD. They're efforts since then has largely been on shooters and Grandia. Lunar development was handed to other studios.

If this is a new game by the folks that made the original, this'll be very nice.
However, if this is merely Ubi-Soft taking advantage of a classic franchise, as I suspect. Then I doubt it'd hold a candle to the previous games in the Lunar series.
No I'm not a pessimist but it's hard for me to believe that this is a Game Arts game when the company that announced it was Ubi-Soft. If Game Arts was working on a new Lunar Game, I would think that we would've heard it from a Japanese source first.

When was the last time we sourced Lunar-NET? Verrrry long time. I personally can't wait for this. I just hope that the combination of RPG and DS functionality will work well.
