News - March NPD numbers trickling in...

Posted by Josh Freund at 09:51:37 PM EST on 4.14.2005.

Updated on April 15 @ 3:06 PM

First off, expect this story to be updated constantly as more numbers come in. Also, most of them are gonna look a bit rough (caps, abbreviated) for now, but you should be able to tell what they are.

We'll start with the PSP games. Notice that they're ranked by money made, so even though Twisted Metal sold more than Need for Speed, NFS is ranked higher, because it made more money (due to its higher price).

I don't understand how people can say "Resident Evil belongs on PS2". Code Veronica is the only real one on the system, and even that was a Dreamcast port. Gamecube is the only system that you can get every single "real" Resident Evil game.

When RE5 comes out (presumably on PS3) I wonder if they'll reissue all of the old ones again for suckers like me that like to have 'em all on one system.

So if someone who has a GC, walks in to the store in November to pick up the PS2 version, and they see the (possibly inferior) PS2 version on one shelf for $40/$50, and the GC version on another shelf for $20/$30, they are still going to get the PS2 version?

52,000 sold isn't really very much. :/ Even if it was GC exclusive, it still wouldn't have enough sales, like all Gamecube titles really. The poor old GC deserves better. :(

The fact is, the GC as a console has a very small user base, anyone that has a PS2 AND GC will get it on the GC.

Actually, this is not true. I know many a person who has both, but decided to wait for the PS2 version, simply because "RE belongs on the PS2." This is a pretty common sentiment among people, as well. If it hadn't been announced as going to the PS2, I think the game would have sold much better by now. Instead, the people with PS2s and GCs, a good chunk of them, anyway, seem to be waiting for the PS2 version (which will probably not be as good in certain areas, like control--Sony's analog sticks suck-- and graphics).

Capcom knows the sales will be there on the PS2... but they cannibalized their GC sales by announcing the port BEFORE the GC version shipped. So instead of getting good sales on the GC for a few months, then waiting until E3 to announce the PS2 version, and then also getting good sales on the PS2, they sacrificed the GC version's sales to build hype up for the PS2 version way earlier than needed.

although it should of still goten betetr sales. people are now waiting for it to come out on the PS2, instead of getting it on the Gamecube. which sucks, cause originally it was suppost to be just an exclusive to the GC, just like RE0

Capcom announcing that RE4 would be ported to PS2 basically had nothing to do with how well the GC game sold. The fact is, the GC as a console has a very small user base, anyone that has a PS2 AND GC will get it on the GC. The number of people that would have bought a GC *just* for RE4 would have amounted to a very small and insignificant figure, probably a few thousand at the most. And instead of people blaming Capcom for hurting GC sales, you should commend them for actually announcing it for PS2 BEFORE some people went out and bought a GC for it. If I'd bought my GC just for RE4 then a week later the announcement came through about it being on PS2, I'd be pretty pissed off.

RE4 is still my game of the year so far. I hope the PS2 can give it the sales it deserves.

Sony keeps selling PS2s because the things are built out of tin foil. They break faster than Sony can produce them. I own the new one, and it broke not 3 months after I purchased it. The funny thing is, I never even moved it from under my TV, and it didn't overheat. It just stopped functioning.

I'm just amazed at how Sony continues to sell PS2s in such large numbers... Very impressive. The PSP's numbers are definitely solid.

I'd like to see how the DS did though, so I hope you guys get those numbers in soon.

Congratulations to Sony on an overhyped launch where the best games didn't sell as much as they should.

"too bad RE4 wont reach a mill on the GC. but now you see why it will be ported onto the PS2."

Funny you say that because that's probably why it didn't reach a million. Capcom didn't even let the sales on the GC before announcing that it was going to the PS2. But that's fine because they just shot themselves in the foot twice: first by killing the GC sales. And second by bringing the game to the PS2 much later, when interest in game will probably be gone.

But it will reach a million, worldwide. I was hoping it would reach a million in NA alone though.

"From what I read every single EB/GS was completely sold out of their initial PSP shipments, while big box stores like Best Buy and Target had plenty of units (in some cases, ranging up to 50 unsold units per store)."

My GS and EB were completely sold out but BB had 200 units left... that's because major retailers (BB, Wal-Mart, etc.) account for most of the purchases.

*Cries for the poor GameCube*

Still, once the new Zelda comes out, I'm sure that will compensate its losses. ;-)

"According to sources, 600,000 PSPs were sold in the first week, the majority of those at game stores like GameStop and EB Games. Both of the mentioned stores required you to purchase at least 3 games when your system."

I don't think all EBGames and Gamestops did that. Even if they did, not everyone bought their PSP at an EB/Gamestop.

Something's amiss....

According to sources, 600,000 PSPs were sold in the first week, the majority of those at game stores like GameStop and EB Games. Both of the mentioned stores required you to purchase at least 3 games when your system.

NPD numbers only show PSP game sales totaling 1,077,068. Shouldn't at least half a million more games have been sold during this period?

i think the problem with resident evil 4 is that it didnt have very good advertising on the gamecube. im sure when it hits ps2, the commercials will be all over the place.

also remember the psp games have only been out for a week on that chart :) well 9 days. so comparing the sales to ds games isn't really fair.

too bad RE4 wont reach a mill on the GC. but now you see why it will be ported onto the PS2.

oh well march saw a pretty solid month for a dead time of the year. now we wait for the rest of the updates :) congrats to all companies

You guys have to remember that the PSP games are ranked by total dollar sales, not the number of units sold.

I'm surprised that Ridge Racer and Wipeout Pure aren't higher on that list... MGA sold better than those two games? Wow. But it probably has something to do with the fact that people saw two racing games and only picked one.

The DS is doing impressive numbers... WarioWare touched is doing very good for a game that's been out a while.

I'm saddened that RE4 didn't do so hot... It'll hit 500K, but I doubt it'll reach 1 million (and it deserves to).:(

You know, if ROBOTS, of all games, can sell well enough on the DS, I think that the system will do just fine.

But indeed, those are some good solid launch numbers for Sony.

The DS games, while few on the list, actually didnt do so bad as compared to the PSP games. and with most of them outbeating most of them, expect the top 2 of course.

Congrats to both, and esp Sony on a good launch

I actually never saw Ridge Racer in a store in stock, so that may have been a big part of it. Now while I wasn;t looking for PSP stuff I may have missed it but that stood out whenever I went in a store that sold anything PSP.

Poor Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat. :(

RE4 needs about 25K more to reach 500,000.

I'm disappointed that Ridge Racer, and Wipeout Pure didn't do better. They are certainly better games than NfS:UR, and TM:HO.

I wonder how many of the sales of some of these games were due to bundles?
