Phantasy Star Universe,
Sega's long anticipated continuation of the Phantasy Star series, will bring gamers together on PS2 and Windows PCs. Containing both an online MMORPG and an offline single-player mode, which is expected to contain around 40 hours of gameplay with 3 planets to explore, Phantasy Star veterans as well as those new to the series should find plenty to enjoy.
Phantasy Star Universe is targeting a release date this winter and more concrete information about the offline mode, character classes, storyline, and the policy on how they will deal with cheaters should be released either at E3 or beyond. GAF will continue to monitor any progress on this title and bring you the latest developments.

Er...a very large majority of PS2 consoles aren't online-ready out of the box, either. That's a non-point.

Okay, true.. well it doesn't have the installed userbase, any significant number of online titles, and it doesn't play online out of the box. It all counts.

A whole new universe.......of item duping!
"GC doesn't really have an online setup compared to PS2."
It has the same online setup as the PS2, actually.

GC doesn't really have an online setup compared to PS2. The PSO games are the only two online games on the whole system iirc. PS2, while having a shoddy online setup, has many millions more people who play it online. Another thing, is that for GC owners to play online they need to buy a modem/BBA, and a keyboard would be quite handy. The new PS2's have the network adaptor built in, and USB keyboards are accessible to everyone. I'm guessing the reason it's PS2-only is the same reason SCIII is PS2-only at the moment, and that's because they wanted to have as many people working on getting the one version as right as it coud be, rather than having people working on building it for other consoles too. PS2 was chosen because it has the biggest userbase and an easy online system. It makes sense to me.
PSU on the next Nintendo console seems very likely, if Nintendo get their Revolution online setup working like they're promising. PSO went from DC to GC, so PSU will likely take the step up too. After all, Sonic Team are second only to Capcom in re-releasing old games with a couple of new features.

This game gives this statement a bit more weight: Sega has some of the best are teams in the business... PERIOD. This looks very good, and I'm not even mentioning the actual technical accomplishments. I can't wait to play this game, but I hope the offline mode does the Phantasy Star series justice. Fans have been waiting for a LONG time for something like this.

I still play PSO on the GC. I probably will till the servers close. I have a few friends on there, and the JP servers always seem to have atleast 250 people on them, so Sega must be making some money on it. I just really hope it get's put on the GC or Revolution or something. My PC is too old to run most stuff, and I don't have a PS2.

Probably because not many people played it. And don't tell me they did, cuz about 90% of the servers weren't even full."
Actually I was quite a regular on the GC PSO, and I WILL tell you that a lot of people were playing it because it's true. The reason the servers weren't full is simple, with the completely open choice of where to play most players only played on the first ship because it was the first ship on the list. Thus leaving many other ships to look completely barren, even though before it was linked with Japan I've seen over 3,000 people online at one time... in the middle of the night.
They wouldn't release Episode 3 and Plus version on Cube if the game wasn't making a decent profit enough to justify such releases. PSU deserves a Gamecube release, because that was the best console to play PSO on.
And as for those hoping for Blue Burst for Gamecube, get over it. The game is 4-5 years old, and the last thing we need is another meer update on a console. Especially considering that Sega no longer monitors the servers like they say they do.

Well the thing is, does this new PSO require a PS2 hard drive? I haven't hardly seen a reason to buy the PS2's hard drive yet. FF11? Choose the PC version of it and you're dodging TWO bullets. You get a keyboard and you don't need to buy a hard drive add-on that's poorly supported and won't hook up to the slim PS2.
It's true that PSO seems like one of the more console-friendly MMORPGs. Not having actually played it online, I don't know how badly it needs a keyboard... I was able to say directly to my friends what I needed to say.

It won't be coming to GC, but I wish they would just wait until next gen for this. :\
I wish they would at least put Blue Burst on GC, but oh well.
But come on, why wouldn't you get this on PS2? PSO is made for consoles. It works perfectly, plus you can get a keyboard for PS2 like most people who go online with PS2 should have. And you can expect the best quality in the game unlike PCs, where I'm not bothering to upgrade for one or two PC games a year.

i agree. even if i had the PS2, i would probably get the PC version instead, esp with the use of the keyboard.

I don't know why anybody would bother playing a MMORPG on a console when their computer can do it... except if their PC isn't strong enough. But I mean, the PC has a keyboard and everything.
That's why I'd pick the PC version over anything else.

sure they did. for about a year after it came out, i would always see the servers full. of course now, they are rather empty.

It looks beautiful. I don't know why Sega seems to be ignoring their fanbase that went to the Gamecube, though >_

So far, Sega has only said that its going to be on Playstation 2 and PC. Perhaps @ E3 they'll reveal even more on this. Plus this game makes me feel funny in my happy spot. :)
