News - Xbox 360 console, controller, camera, revealed!

Microsoft held a "Xbox360 Revealed" launch party in Los Angeles yesterday, and it appears that someone managed to get a picture of the system and all the goods with a camera phone.
The console is standing up vertically on a stand. If you look closely, you'll notice what appears to be a hard drive attachment on top of it.
On the left side of the pic is the headset for Xbox Live, with the controller to the right of it.
Previously unseen is the camera, which is to the right of the controller. This should function like the EyeToy does with
Sony's PlayStation 2.
Now, there had already been partial pictures of the Xbox 360 revealed before, but there's never been a picture showing the whole console, along with the accessories, so this is a pretty big leak.
So, what do you think? Are you glad they went with a white color scheme? Is the design stylish? Ugly? Let us know by posting a comment below.

When Nintendo says they currently hold a 32% market share worldwide they're including the GBA and the DS in their figures.
PS2 has sold over 80 million units worldwide, while Xbox and Gamecube are around 20 million a piece. If you only count the 3 current home consoles, Microsoft and Nintendo put together don't have much more than a 32% market share. Sony currently owns more than 65%of the home console market.

That is one ugly mother. But since when have the creators of the clone army been making consoles to match their decor?

I was actually wondering if such a thing might be housed there when I was looking at it earlier today. I can only hope it is some sort of cable hook up. there's no need for me to use a wireless controller when I sit 5 feet from my game console.

Near the butten under the power butten there's a flip open slot which more then likely contains USB plugins. Because power travels through USB cables, it wouldn't be difficult at all to engineer a controller that plugs into the front via USB in order to charge.

"I see no place to plug a power cable in to.. oh no, how do I turn it on?! There's a whole other side of the console you can't even see."
I'm sure that we would plug our controllers into the rear of the system to charge them. after all, people who put their consoles into any sort of stand always have plenty of room to reach behind the system.

Well, I dont like it. It is not really a box anymore, and X is becomeing something different.
White, is not good. My Dreamcast got way dirty. Please Microsoft, release different colors.
The controller is only slightly different. BUt by the looks of it you don't want to throw it down.
And the camera is just stupid, a ripoff, and reminds of that Nintendo robot.
As for Nintendo and their new console. Just wait for E3 people before you make any desisons. Nintendo is a God who just got their powers taken away, they may be rechargeing.
But because the 360 comes out this year. I'm going to buy it.

32% in Japan maybe, world wide I believe that thier share in the console market is about 15% last I checked. Nintendo may be able to survive though, thier key demographics are different then the demographics that Sony and Microsoft are going for, and this buisness tactic is essentially reducing the amount of consoles on the market to 2.5 Whether or not the market can sustain 2.5 consoles is yet to be seen.

dswhore 5.8.2005 at 05:54:14 PM
Wolvenone, you said earlier that you don't think that the market will be able to support 3 consoles for too much longer and that you have a feeling that Nintendo will perish first.
Will, Miyamoto (sp?) actually said in a recent interview (possibly at the GDC, or whatever it was called) that Nintendo control 32% of the console market (meaning that Microsoft and Sony - and possibly even the sega dreamcast controls the rest - on a worldwide scale, that is)
So, it's not like they are dying the horrible sales - they appear to be just behind or equal to the rest (depending on who they classify as being in the console market)
But I have a feeling that the Revolution will take off (well, at least better than the Gamecube did) and besides, the gamecube is the most bought/owned console in Japan.

I don't understand how anyone can strongly like or hate the way the system looks. It looks...so nuetral. It kinda looks like an iPod, so I guess that's a sorta sexy. But its missing that "dazzle" factor...
Then again, this is just ONE crappy cell-phone pick and sometimes picks do no justice.
Also, custom covers are confirmed so all of you need to stop bitching. (unless microsoft jacks up the prices for those...)
Y'know the more I look at it, the more I'm appreciating its minimalist look...

And of course as Miguga stated we're going to have to wait a while longer for more detailed information about the console. I look forward to all the details we're going to be seeing on all the various consoles, after all, this sort of thing is, sorta one of my hobbies I suppose.

You know, I have a hard time tolerating fanboy rants but I'm going to try and keep my cool here and explain this calmly.
A: Everybody has different taste, some people love this design, others hate it, and many are somewhat indifferent.
B: I personally don't own an X-Box or plan on picking on up anytime soon, but it is extremly rude to call people whom like the console, "gay," or otherwise imply that they "suck," merely because they like the console.
C: It's in everyones best interests to keep these comment boards civil. After all, if they ever descend into a bunch of name calling sessions or whatnot, the administrators can always pull the cord on them.
Okay, that is all.

I think the biggest problem is that when you look at the console itself you don't go "Oooh, ahhh, eee." WIth the original Xbox, when you saw the green / black ridges on the top with the X design, you might have gone "Woah, that's cool." I think they were going for the "Oh look how sleek and cool our new system is", but they missed. Instead they're getting lukewarm feedbacks. Personally I think the problem is a lack of any sort of color and something cool on it. All I see is ovals and a circle. Nothing out of the ordinary, nothing cool like the big frilled X on the original Xbox.
As for the controller, I think most everyone agrees that it's ugly. Too Fischer-Price plasticy look. Then again, the look isn't as important as how it feels and handles, so only testing (at E3, hopefully ^_^) will tell.

Okay, first off, I've done a little bit of measuring using the DVD-rom drive to give me a sense of scale, and I've concluded that this machine is roughly the same size as a PS2.
As for my earlier statements about the market being unable to handle 3 consoles forever. That's mainly speculation. Don't take it too seriously.

This MUST'VE been what people thought future entertainment devices would look like now back in the 60s. I thought microsoft was trying to make the system smaller. It could be me, but in comparison to the size of the controller, this system seems like it's around the same size of the current xbox. The Japanese market is most likely gonna hate this.

Microsoft made a loss because they lose out on every xbox sold. And you can't force Nintendo out of the console business as they're still the most profitable company in the industry.
shin gallon: haven't you ever used a wavebird? best. wireless. ever.

wolvenone 5.8.2005 at 02:54:11 AM
I should note that Microsofts last console didn't lose money due to not selling well, it lost money because they chose a bunch of partners that roped them into bad licensing deals, which effectivly ate up any and all profits and then some.
I actually do think Microsoft will survive the next round in the console war, however, I have the sneaking suspician that the market will not support 3 machines much longer.
This rather scares me as I suspect that Nintendo is the one most likely to be forced out of the market. Though I don't rule out Sony failing miserably either.

shin gallon 5.8.2005 at 02:31:26 AM
Visually, the console isn't too hot looking...actually, it looks like a 80's VCR or something to me.
I also don't like wireless-only controllers, they're not as reliable as wired ones in my experience.
Still, it's all about the games, but damn...that's an ugly system.

Microsoft lost money on the last machine, and they sure as hell don't want to on this machine either. It looks like Microsoft's higher-ups had a discussion, followed by market research about what people generally like about current technologies, and then crammed them into one machine.
Here's a list of what the people would have told them:
- Xbox's headset
- I-Pod's look
- Sony's Controller Design
- Nintendo's Wireless Controller
- Playstation 2's Eyetoy
- etc.
I don't think people will buy it in droves though, it seems too "all-in-one"/"as-seen-on-TV"

If you ask me, I'd say that the console doesn't look hideously ugly or absolutely beautiful. In fact, I don't think any console look ugly or pretty. It just looks like a console.
However, I will mention that I'm not too fond of wireless only controllers. As mentioned previously, it'll be a hassle to have to switch batteries all the time. Plus, it could also mean that there won't be any vibration. I've always preferred using a regular GC controller over a wavebird. Try playing the Mercenaries game in RE4 with a dying wavebird. It'll really screw you up.

i think the system design was created with a japanese audience in mind. if you look at the original x-box: the black, the green aperture "X" . . . kind of looks agressive, unfriendly, unjapanese. the system design may not appeal to americans like it's predecessor--but it doesnt need to; they already have american consumers by the balls anyway, they'll buy it regardless

I dont like the design, but games will tell,
Microsoft is disguising their console in order to look like a CPU, in the next console cicle they will sell the PC-XBOX3 hybrid.
This design show Microsoft last move, taking a step back to take refuge and camouflaging in a market where they are strong and nobady would like to compete with them, PC games, they are not taking any risk with this design, we know how much money the lose with XBOX1, sayng that the XBOX 2 controls will work with PC games proof this.
Nintendo will take theyr chance and Sony will wait to see what can they copy from Nintendo and improve it in a sort of way.
I am waiting here for Nintenfo Revolution and Sony PS3, and I hope both deliver an improve contrubution to the game industry, they have the money and the good intentions too,

The PS2's, excluding the new slim design, are very blocky, ridged, and, well, clunky looking. This MAY stand on it's side like a can PS2, but, otherwise it really doesn't look like one. Here we have a fairly well curved design that really is fairly small if you sit and look at it for awhile.
Assuming that the DVD drive on the machine is just as wide as the PS2's, then the machine is actually reletivly short and roughly the size of the original PS2. Which, was really small when compared to the original X-Box.

Your all fat. Look you guys complain about this, but lemme tell you. This is gnna be huge. Trust me. This design is great. Sleek and beautiful. Maybe not "Console" design looking, but it still is really nice. Some of you are just Anti-Xbox everything... well be prepared to buy the new Xbox system cause its gnna rock. Then, alot of you are just PS2 fanboys, and you all praise the PS3 on how much better it looks when you havnt even seen it yet. I have a sneaky suspicion that PS3's design isn't gonna be that great, let alone revolutionary in any way. Just a suspicion. This is a sleek design, user friendly, colors are nice, and just looks pretty sweet. It's gonna be this and the Revolution. PS2 wasn't exactly a revolutionary design, I don't expect PS3 to be either. And it looks pretty small compared to the head that is sitting there. Trust me this design is gonna be really good. And you can stack it I'm sure. Take a look at the back edge, looks pretty straight. I dont have one problem with this design. I hope your all ready, Thursday is when we will see it in action.

How do you know that you can't connect your controller up to the system, and recharge it through the (possible)lithium battery inside the controller? You're just assuming that you'll need to be going out and buying AA batteries for it.
And as for the shape, although the front look curved, the base of the system is completely flat, and it's likely the top will be, too. You've never really been able to stack ANY console(apart from PS2), I don't see why it's suddenly a problem here.

fillerbunny9 5.7.2005 at 08:17:09 PM
I'm looking at this and the only real thought on my mind is yuck. I think one thing Microsoft is going for here is standing out. here in America, most people have traded their PSOnes for PS2s. those with Gamecubes are coloring their entertainment stand with something not black, but the rest, well, all their equipment is going to be a dark dark grey, or black color. people will see this in a stand and be drawn to it due to the contrast and say "what's that?" visually though, it just doesn't do it for me.
my other beef with this, is the "it worked for them, so it'll work for us" mentality. look, you can stand it vertical or horizontal! look, we gotta webcam too! wireless controller? we got that! I see what they're doing here as well, and while it may not be original, it may prove effective; you like all these things, so we're gonna give them to you. Sony scoffed at the GBA connectivity to the Gamecube for ages, but then lo and behold, they're gonna make the PS3 and PSP be connectable.
I think what bothers me the most about functionality over the aesthetics are two things. one, there are no signs of any connection ports for the controllers, so not only will they be wireless, but require you to facilitate your own batteries. some may think this a minor gripe, but harder-core players will be purchasing a new controller each year in battery costs. maybe more, we've not been given a battery life estimate yet.
as for the second thing bothering me, the console looks to be slot loading. I've never found systems that rely on slot loading optical drives to be reliable, especially with frequent swapping of disks.
the concave top is also of worry, as it is bad for the dispersal of heat. it's not stackable unless you place it on top. (if you look carefully at the picture, we're seeing the front and "base" of the system, as it is flat.) now I currently have ten video game systems hooked to my TV. I have run out of systems I can put others on top of since they have either a top loading disc or cartrige based system. now, while some gamers have set their saturns and dreamcasts, and SNES-es behind, mine still receive use with at least a moderate frequency. there's no real space for this to fit into my collectioon. in the end, it will come down to the software causing me to purchase the hardware, so until then, I guess I don't need to worry about finding a place. if they make the software which interests me, I'll pick one up. but if the original X-Box is any indication, I don't need to worry about that until at least a year from launch.

50 bucks says the HDD is a laptop sized version. For those that don't know. An old school or even Current Ipods use and are roughly the same size. That is a lot smaller.
So how wide deep the system is may be a lot smaller than u think. If a drive that is only 2 and a half inches(about that) across goes in there.

I prefer my console to be on it's bottom than on the side...that's how a lot of areas under the TV are constructed (how many DVD / VHS players stand upright?. However, with it's hourglass curve, it looks like it'll be, well, for lack of a better word, awkward, to put on its bottom.
Personally I think a but more color would have been nice...I liked the black/green combo on the Xbox. Perhaps a few bits of green would have been cool on this system - I know when you turn it on it'll have a green light, but whatever. And yes, interchangeable face plates will be cool, but I'm sure in the end people will just care about the games.

Sheesh, people, standing on it's side wasn't exactly a creative feature even for the PS2, and otherwise it bares little resemblence to the PS2, which frankly had a rather ugly design in my book.
I'm not a MS fanboy but sheesh, lets be fair people. Is it a beutiful design, no, it could be alot slicker looking, is it ugly, no, it's not. It's somewhere in the middle I think, niether stunning nor ugly.

People also need to keep in mind that it's very likely that the thing will have interchanable faceplates. Which would mean that you can go ahead and alter the look to your liking.
Personally, as is, I think it's nice looking, I would add just a "little," more black though to add a better contrast. Of course, if I can indeed just snap off one of the faceplates, then it's an easy matter to spraypaint one of them black.

You know, at first I thought it was hideous, but you have to look at how user-friendly it is. Wireless ports, uncluttered front, wireless controllers...it's all very slick. However, it also doesn't stand out as much, giving it a very boring look.
I'm torn. Either way, I won't be getting it, but still...

the original xbox is still the best looking console by far.

Your all morons! If Apple came out with this design everyone would be raving at how genious the design is. The truth is, it looks far better than any console out now, has a very slick contemporary look to it and will look nicely in the living room home theater setup. I'm sure they can't make it much smaller with the hardware that goes inside this thing. It needs plenty of room to vent heat out.

On the other hand it looks like the camera has high resolution, and the headset is wireless.
I woud like to see several XBOX2 forming a circle, it would be like stonehenge

It looks like something I would keep under or beside my desk and plugged into my monitor... in other words a computer... :/

Well, I suppose you can't get much worse than the look of the last XBOX. This one looks more sleek and smaller. I still don't know about the controller though. I have a feeling it will be like the first XBOX and no one will use the original controller.

Horrible
Japaneese people arnt going to like this kind af StoneHenge artifact, too big for my taste.
It is a big console, compare it with the head set, and the control look tiny in comparation.
At least the controlers look more close to our era (XX century,90 decade, year 92) there is no scheme difference between this control and the PS1.
Like Sony said, this jack should be called X-BOX 1.5

It looks rather good, I think. Is all this stuff bundled with the console? I'd assume not, but it would be nice. If the camera came with the console if would be used much more often than the eyetoy was with PS2.
The controller doesn't look so good. From this picture, it looks very much like a Dreamcast controller, but with the black and white buttons removed and placed as shoulder buttons, it'll bring it on a par with the PS2's pad.

Without seeing a size comparison, it's hard to tell. They say it's much smaller than the Xbox, but it's hard to gauge just how big it is from that screen. Preliminary judgment: No, sir, I don't like it.

White and Black, good color scheme! Though I would've thrown in a little more black to balence it out more. And in response to the person complaining about the design ripping off the PS2. Give us a break please.
It is nice to see that Eye-toy type peripherals are becoming more standardized, after all they have a LOT of gameplay potential

I'll definitely let you know what I think. Microsoft is a generation behind in it's console design. Can anyone say ps2 clone. I mean every design aspect is like the ps2 when it first came out. It can stand up vertically... yeah what's new... the headset--- stolen from the game SOCOM... the camera--- stolen from eye toy. And the wireless function stolen from the gamecube. Damn man--- talk about some crap. And the color was stolen from the PSX.... The only unique thing about this console is that it upgraded from the vcr box (xbox) and it has a NEON GREEN ball that lights up... when ps3 is revealed during E3. Then, we can talk... this is nothing but an eye sore.

Well, it's definitely different. I'm just glad to see the whole thing and all the accessories in an actual picture, rather than just mock-ups.
