News - Close up images of Xbox 360 controller + Media Center remote

Posted by Josh Freund at 11:50:38 PM EST on 5.7.2005.

Once again, thanks to Engadget, we can provide you with some more leaked pictures of Xbox 360 goods. Specifically, a close up image of the controller and the remote for the Xbox 360 Media Center/DVD player.

Here's the controller:

No, that circle in the center is not a trackball. It's a button that, when pressed, takes you right to the Xbox Live menu, reaffirming Microsoft's focus on their online gaming service.

One of the four numbers (1, 2, 3, & 4) around the button will light up to show you which controller yours is - considering it can be hard to tell otherwise with wireless controllers.

Here's the Media Center remote:

Let the comments begin! :)

"hey bloodydix and maxim, stop making fun of me. Whoever likes XBOX can suck on my analog stick from my ps2 controller =P"

You keep saying that you're not 11, but exactly how old are you? If you can't remember you could always try severing your head from your neck and counting the rings.

the new xbox will most likely be networked in some way. If u have a router, i assume it will allow u to access media files off of those pc's. Mp3's, mpegs, etc. And i heard a little bird say u can use your PC hdd to save games if u dont take the HDD option for the xbox. Thats just what i heard whispered.

I hope the Web-TV rumors are true, from what I've read the same source that leaked the entire web-TV bit also claims that at least one version of the console will be backwards compatible.

There may not be many X-Box games I REALLY want, but, if I can buy one console that can play them as well as next generation titles, then I'd be alot more willing to buy it.

not gonna read all the comments, but does anyone notice the "Windows" button on the non-gaming controller? Looks like the rumors of webtv were true.

I agree with anyone who thinks it's somewhere in the middle. What hurts it, I think, is that it's really obvious what they were going for, and they only got about halfway there.

hey wolve... butt out... why are you always talking about xbox with a smirk on your face. It's like u want to marry it.... FINAL FANTASY ROCKS... and das it. AND so what if xbox is gonna get a cheap imitation of FF by the original man himself. Good luck and good riddance to you all.

ahm3d3sa, do us all a favor and cut it out. You're not actually adding anything to the discussion, you're merely insulting people and spouting foul mouthed innuendo.

You're spoiling an otherwise very enjoyable experience.

"This controller looks like something s***ted last night in the toilet."

You poor boy. Obviously your daddy abusing you every night is messing up your thoughts.

On the account of the machine, it really is a ugly little thing, but if what it produces is up to the quality of what it's older sibling did then i'll gladly get one. Especially if it's backwards compatible.

I don't know about the comment about MS designed this with the Japanese audience in mind. Although I'm sure MS has that intention, I showed the pics to 2 Japanese friends, and both of them winced and said it's quite ugly. Knowing the sleek, compact electronics the Japanese consumers are known to love, this is clearly a wrong perception of their wants.

to say u hate wireless is to say u hate future technology. ITs an obvious step in the future of gaming to cut the wires out. Just like most everything on a pc (keyboard, mouse, tablets etc.) are made wireless. I personally am glad a company has finally decided to just cut the old crap of wires and the mess that comes with it. imo.

wolvenone: True...granted, I didn't like any of the RPGs for the first X-Box (I hated Morrowind, Fable was awful and I played KotOR on PC, and even that game didn't keep my interest more than a few hours). I'm much more of a Final Fantasy-style RPG gamer, I'm interestewd to see what the former Square guys have in mind for the new X-Box.
I still don't like the fact that they're forcing wireless on us, though : P

If you want my input, Microsoft went with this design to appeal to the Japanese audience. It's not horrible, but does look kinda cheapy and doesn't match their image at all.

I dont like this control, it comes with the same flaws of the current control, the round buttons and the control pad are still problematic for some games (like fighting games)
Who care if they remove the black and withe button?
Now the control has only 4 buttons on the front, its not a problem since they place 2 new buttons in the upper part of the control.
I dont see evolution in this design, this is like a PS1/X-BOX1/Wave bird hybrid.
Again, this is not a shift in tecnology, it is just an X-BOX 1.5 to me.

It is very posible that Microsoft replace this Xenon console in 3 years, with the excuse that they launched an X-BOX 1.5.

Sony will show every body theyr better and improved design and tecnology, and will request to every gamer to wait for them, like they did with the Dreamcast before.
Here the diference will be the wallet that Microsoft own to sponsore theyr console, it wont be as easy as Sony did when they kicked Sega 5 years ago.

By the way, X-BOX 2 has a logo very similar to the Dreamcast one.

I like the solid white idea but I don't think they pulled it off very well with the color they picked for grey, as well as the colors on the buttons. I always prefered the shades of purple SNES controller to the colored one, so, yeah. The functionality, though, with the lighted numbers and the Live-link button... That's awesome.

The remote just looks like ass.

controller seems comfortable, hope the"live button" won't reset the game,It will be stupid if u pressed the button by mistake and then u get to start over again but I think they thought of that.the number is a nice idea. hopefullly won't be making problems with LAN parties and the wirreless mix-up

I am pretty happy about the controller - they kept the basic design of the current controller and moved the black and white buttons. Using the same setup means that it will be easy to play games from the first Xbox since it's backwards compatible. Moving the black and white buttons is good because they'll be easier to get to now. There are still some unanswered questions, though. One is how big it will be. I'd imagine it being similar to the controller S in size, but I'm hoping for a bit larger. My hands are a little large, so I prefer the original controller, as do most people I talk to. Also, I'd like to know how long the batteries can go between charges. The Live button is great. I use Xbox Live a lot, and it can be a pain to try and get to the Xbox Live menu. This should make things much easier.
Now for the remote. I own an XP Media Center Edition PC, and I love it. The controller that comes with the PC looks very similar to the one pictured. I think it's important to note the green button near the bottom. This is identical to the button that brings up the media center program on my remote. This could lend credibility to the next Xbox being much more of a media hub. It is also interesting that there it says CH_PG above the green button. This is identical to the writing next to the channel up/down buttons on my remote. This might mean that the system will have some sort of TV functionality, which I certainly wouldn't mind. If it could record TV programs like my PC, I would use it all the time.
Overall, I'm very happy with the controller and remote.

It passes the looks test for me. I think the light-up numbers are a good idea. However, looks don't tell us much... Does it feel good?

I have the same complaint about the rounded buttons... I think buttons should either be flat or concave... the original X-box buttons started hurting because they were a bulge. Also, the crosspad isn't the best thing ever. To me, nobody has ever done a crosspad like Nintendo (SNES, specifically). And will people ever bump the Live button when trying to hit start or select?

I guess I'd like to just feel it in my hands. If it felt as good as a Gamecube controller, I think you could call it a success.

I think the GameCube standard has the best egonomics - the buttons themselves are a different matter and dont get me started on the Z button and C-stick

The Black and White buttens have been moved to the shoulders.

But, yeah, 2 rows of 3 are the ideal layout. Not sure why so few game companies utilize it.

However this doesn't make all that much difference to use RPG fanatics. Since very few of our games are really hindered by a mere 4 face buttens.

shin gallon 5.8.2005 at 02:49:48 AM
Yeah, it's WITHOUT 6 face buttons...I really wish they'd do a good 2 rows of 3 buttons design for these pads (they could have done that with the first XBox pads but didn't).

Once again a new console comes out without 6 face buttons...so once again a console comes out with controllers that aren't as good as the Sega Saturn.

Those holes at the bottom of the controller... is that for the head set or for recharging?
The a-sticks and d-pad looks pretty cheap to me.

kokichi 5.8.2005 at 01:10:37 AM
Meh. Personally I find the pure white color to be a little boring, especially since the control stick and all isn't "black" as it is "grey". Plus it also has that Fisher-Price plasticy look going for it. And the start/select buttons remind me of cheap breath mints. But whatever, as long as it feels good and works out to be fine, it's cool. And I wonder if that button can do anything while ingame...

"You know I've heard some really awful complaints about the Xbox, but that one takes the cake."

About the buttons? They're a pain for fighting games like Guilty Gear or Third Strike. They're not meant to be mashed repeatedly or by people with small thumbs. I was hoping that would have changed this time around.

marik 5.8.2005 at 12:33:19 AM
Do you know what the triggers are and if there is any replacement on the black and white buttons, like new triggers? And how's the batteries? Built in like the SP and DS or batteries like the WaveBird?

A trackball would've been neat, but I'm not at all suprised, mainly cause that wouldn't have been a good spot for it.

I am fairly pleased though, simply put, I like the look.... except for the neon green bit. I don't know why but I've never liked that color.
