News - Sonic Rush for DS - New 2D Sonic revealed!

Posted by Josh Freund at 01:04:49 AM EST on 5.18.2005.

Remember the Sonic DS tech demo from last year, in which you had to rub the stylus rapidly across the screen in order to make Sonic run? Well, in case some of you though that's what the new Sonic DS game would be; it's not.

Sega has unveiled Sonic Rush - a brand new 2D Sonic platformer for the DS, starring Sonic and Blaze the Cat. It appears that Rush will not use the "action on one screen, map on the other" that is becoming frequent with DS games. Rather, the action will be stretched across both screens.

Here are the first five screenshots and a piece of character art:

"The whole game has a pretty cool look to it and makes good use of polygons in both the Sonic player model and the boss character."

Also from the Gamespot article. It would appear that the game does dabble in polygonal work.

I hope the character models are sprites and not polygonal. It seems from the screenshots that the character models are poorly renddered polygonal ones. With the DS showing off mario/yoshi's big head in good qaulity, sonic team can do better than these models

From Gamespot:
"Another new feature is a meter that lives on the left side of the screen. When it's full, you can activate a rush mode that effectively makes you unstoppable for a brief period of time."
That's all they said about it... *shrug*

Why does there appear to be a life meter? Or is that some sort of dash meter?

NO way did the GBA Sonic games suck! I thought they were great! Old-school platforming at its best! Sonic Advance 3 was definitely the best so far. If you're a fan of old-school Sonic games, you have to get the GBA ones.

The funny thing is, I've got a cat named Blaze. Does my cat ACTUALLY know Sonic, and can he really run at ridiculous speeds and save the world? I've gotta find out... Here kitty!

i think this game will probably be really great. nintendo is with the times, making 2d sonics like this. they realize that 2D is not a thing of the past. people want to play real games like this, not games with just better graphics.

All I know is... Sega gave me a new 2D Sonic, and I've been asking for that for years. Actually, I've been asking for that from Mario as well and I got that also. What a good day to be a 2D fan!
