News - New details surface on Mega Man X Collection

Posted by Ash Paulsen at 06:35:21 AM EST on 6.6.2005.

Capcom's upcoming Mega Man X Collection, which contains Mega Man X through Mega Man X6 as well as the never-before-released-in-the-US Mega Man Battle & Chase all in one collection, was curiously absent at E3... but that's okay now, because little more than half a month later, we've got some very interesting and enticing new details regarding this classic compilation.

Mega Man X fans, fasten your seatbelts, because this is going to be one doozy of a ride.

First off, it has been confirmed that Ocean Group, the voice acting group responsible for the surprisingly great voice work in the recent series releases Mega Man X: Command Mission and Mega Man X8, has signed up to work on Mega Man X Collection as well. What exactly have they been hired to do?

Get ready for it: they've been hired to redub X, Zero, and Sigma - as well as give Dr. Light a voice during gameplay - in Mega Man X4 (no more little girl X!). But it gets better. They'll also be giving Mega Man X6 a full English dub, which is perhaps the real treat here, seeing as the original PS1 release of that game featured one of the worst post-NES-era "English" translations of all time (and while the Japanese voice acting was fine, it didn't count for much with such an awful Engrish script to read).

There's still more, though. Even though Mega Man X4 and Mega Man X6 are the only ones confirmed to have redubbing/dubbing work done for them, the other titles in the series are being considered for dubbing as well - yes, ALL of them. Read on.

Currently under consideration is an English dub for the story-heavy Mega Man X5 (the extent of which seems to just be voices for X, Zero, and Dynamo for now; this is rather unclear at the moment), and that indeed would be a treat were it to actually happen. But it gets crazier - Capcom is also even considering dubbing Mega Man X, Mega Man X2, and Mega Man X3 - yes, the first three chapters in the series, all of them Super NES games. WOW. But rest easy, purity freaks - Capcom has said that if a dubbing of the first three games does happen, the option to have the voices in the games on or off will be included, appeasing everyone.

Though this is purely speculative, it would seem to follow that we'll probably get re-translated, re-written English scripts for the games that do end up getting the dubbing/re-dubbing treatment, so that may be something else to look forward to (especially in the case of Mega Man X6... heh).

Moving on, GameCube owners can rest easy: the GCN version of Mega Man X Collection will feature configurable controls, effectively making obsolete the wretched control problems of the GCN version of Mega Man Anniversary Collection.

Last but not least, Capcom of America is taking E-mail feedback from you, the fans, about what you want to see in your Mega Man X Collection and sending it to the appropriate people at Capcom of Japan for consideration. If you want to be heard, make sure to fire off a friendly, brief E-mail to Capcom of America detailing what you would like to see make it into the collection, remembering that the dubbing for X1, X2, X3, and X5 are the likeliest and most reasonable, currently-under-consideration options. Please keep any other suggestions reasonable and do not take advantage of this rare opportunity to tell a game company exactly what you want in your games.

Lastly, also remember that what will and will not be in the collection is anything but final and all of this info is subject to change at any time (except for the dubbing/redubbing being done for X4 and X6; that's confirmed).

All in all, it looks like Mega Man X Collection is shaping up to be the all-inclusive, for-fans collection that Mega Man Anniversary Collection should have been. It definitely seems as if Capcom is really listening to their fans this time, not only by developing this collection in-house (no more Atomic Planet, thank heavens), but also by giving the older games in the series the full-on makeover treatment and providing us with the presentations that arguably should have been there already (as far as the dubbing and translation work for X4, X5, and X6 are concerned).

Stay tuned to GAF for any more developments!

I'd be really happy if it's the SNES version of X3 included. I've never played the PS1 game, but I've heard it was inferior, with problems like the music looping weirdly and such. I wonder when this comes out if it will affect the prices of Mega Man X, X2, and X3 for SNES on EBay.

Good point, actually. They have gotten way too much spam already.

But you still didn't tell me how I misinformed anyone.

actually, it'd be better if you didn't, considering all the spam they've already gotten.

Daislite -

Explain, assuming you know where my "inaccuracies" lie.

Pixy Misao -

Ah yes, good point. I'll update with a link to their E-mail.

No link for Capcom's email?

Well personally I'd rather have Mega Man Xtreme 1 & 2 than Battle and Chase, (or these new dubs which make no sense, the new dubbing will sound just as badanyway) or I'd even prefer Legends 1 & 2... or all 4 :)

Ah, yes. Now I get to relive all those moments that show why Zero is just sooooo much better than X. XD

No more Atomic Planet? YES!! Oh man, that makes me so happy. Those incompetent morons couldn't do anything right. Where is my Mega Man VII ending scene where we see Dr. Wily's castle in flames? And how the hell did they manage to screw up the controls? I want to find the car of whoever is responcible for this and rig it so that their gas and break petals are reversed. Let's see how they like having the controls they're use to inverted.

Maybe because it's late and doesn't portray the information 100% accurately?

Sweet! Now all that I want is to get the Japanese only PS1 Mega Man X3 gamee included on this collection. Anime cut scenes included. Well, guess I'll just have to ask Capcom for that in my letter. Great news. I love Mega Man X!

I kinda liked some of the voices in X4 (like Zero), too. Not X, though.

X8 and Command Mission were great, though, and it would really make my day to see those voices in the previous games (especially to erase the memories of the horrible X6 translation).

It's nice to see Capcom wanting to create a sense of consistency for the voices, too. I've been under the impression they never used to care...

I guess I can't really speak for X8, as I've not played the game. I disliked the play style of X7 a good bit, so I didn't even bother. In fact, I wasn't a big fan of any of the X games past X4...

Dude, just... no. :P X is my favorite character of all time and he is NOT supposed to sound like a little girl. The way he sounds in Mega Man X8 is how he's always sounded in the Rockman X games and it was really perfect... I can't wait to play these games (or at the very least, X4 and X6) redubbed and hear 'em the way they were meant to be heard.

I'll probably still be too poor to afford this when it comes out, but I do wish I could. X4 is one of my most favoritest games! Yaaaay!

I rather liked X4's dubbing, though....
