News - Nintendo's "Hot Summer" Japanese contest - Five new DSes

Nintendo of Japan has announced a new contest for the summer. Titled "Hot Summer," it will begin on July 1 and end August 31.

In order to take part in the contest, gamers have to buy either a Nintendo DS or two games (DS, GBA, and GC all count) and register them online at the Japanese Club Nintendo website. They will then be entered into a drawing. At the end, 1,000 randomly-selected winners will receive one of five new limited edition DSes introduced in this contest:

Each DS will have a character's image (in wireframe), the words "Hot Summer," and then a character name. Beneath that are the words Ninten Taro; that's where the winners will be able to have their own custom message engraved. Mario, Wario, Yoshi, Peach, and Bowser are the five characters that will get their own DSes, and they will all be different colors, as you can see above.

There will also be 1,000 winners of Panasonic Walkmans and SD cards (which have Nintendo music on them) and 3,000 winners of DS satchels.

No word yet on any contests for the US. :-/

Yeah... We've only got Zelda bonuses. It would be nice if NoA would do something like this for a change... Just think how great that would be for publicity, too.

In fact, why DON'T they do something like this? It could only be beneficial. They would be sure to sell more products while getting people to try and win stuff.

Why can't NOA be more like it's Japanese and European counter parts? They get cool stuff... the only good thing we've gotten so far is the Zelda Collector's Edition.

Taro, according to dictionary.com: "A widely cultivated tropical Asian plant (Colocasia esculenta) having broad peltate leaves and a large starchy edible tuber."

So I'm guessing this is somehow one of those Japanese puns those in the West just can't understand.

For me its a toss up between the Yoshi and Peach DS.

(Just cause I'd love to see other gamers' faces when they see a fully grown male playing with a pink DS)

I'm not sure. That's the space where winners will be able to have custom messages engraved.

As far as I know, they will just be "available" through this contest, and not sold in stores afterward.

If so, I'm sure that at least some will be on eBay... and I'll have to hunt myself down a Koopa one ^_^ Don't have a DS yet anyway...
