Though we'd known that a
Worms game was in production for PSP and DS for quite some time now, it hadn't officially been announced until today.
Here's your obligatory official announcement quote:
"Team17 is excited and delighted to bring Worms to Nintendo DS and the PSP system in conjunction with THQ," said Martyn Brown, Studio Director, Team 17. "Both of these new systems represent exciting new handhelds capable of delivering unique experiences both in single player and using the exciting wireless multiplayer capabilities of the platforms. We are developing incredibly addictive new versions of our classic game for existing fans of the series and newcomers to the world of Worms. It's time to dust off the Holy Hand Grenade and unleash some more exploding sheep!"
In addition to the announcement, these very welcome tidbits have been revealed on the official Team17 forum:
"Both the PSP and DS editions will feature classic Worms gameplay - as vociferously requested by our fans. Both versions have been in development for some time, news on release dates will follow much later in the year.
The PSP will utilise 3d background imagery and zooming, full width 16:9 proportions. It looks cute as sin.
Both platforms feature ad-hoc wireless play and of course, hot-seat play as well as single player games that suit the play patterns of the devices (i.e. short bursts).
The DS will feature touch-screen use; planned to be finger rather than stylus control to make it better for hot-seat situations. The touch screen will be used for map scrolling, weapon controls and stats.
The gamecode is all new for both editions and not a port of earlier 2d games.
A 3d version of Worms is not currently planned for these devices, for both technical and play-factor reasons bearing in mind their screen resolution and suitability to the original 2d game mechanics."
Good news for those of us who have been hoping for a return to Worms' roots on the new portables.

Touch screen would make this so much easier to use, just on matters like weapon selection (assuming that you can haul around multiple weapons).
I'm still surprised that the DS hasn't had a stream of RTS games for that same reason, but I imagine they're slowly going to trickle in. I still want someone to get the rights to Starcraft. :(

Widescreen doesn't matter for a Worms 2D game. Touch screen controls would be great, though. Accurate aiming and easy selecting would just make the game a lot better to control.

screen size helps any game. You don't have to hold the thing as close to your face, that's what I mean. You're right about the firing off-screen thing.

How screen size would matter on a worms game... I just don't know.
i've played plenty of worms in my day, and chances are half you shots are going to be somewhere off screen anyway. don't see how that screen is gonna help you.
I'll be getting the DS one cause that's what I have. But I don't like the idea of letting a crap load of people smudge up my screen with their grubby fingers.

touch screen control would be cool in this game, but not necessary. The PSP wins this time on screen size.

It'd be a neat idea for inter-console multiplayer... Like have it so both DS, and PSP versions can play together, or whatnot. But I guess since sony, and nintendo designed the hardware, the developers can't help it... oh well... lol

2D Worms on 16:9! I hope you can pass the system around for multiplayer and have online support as well.

I'd rather have the touch screen controls than widescreen but whatever floats your boat. Touch screen for Worms would be killer. The graphics are supposedly not that different, either.

Yeah, I'm thinking of the PSP screen too. The DS screens are just so small.. Worms gameplay was never really enhanced with a mouse/touchscreen anyway. I can press exactly where I want my homing missile to land. Oh..great.

Sounds awesome. The PSP screen will be great for this kind of game :)

Worms 2 and Worms: Armageddon, were the ultimate party game back in the day. I was very dissapointed in worms 3d. I'm glad they've decided to make the new game 2D again =)
DS yet again shows where it shines above the PSP. I'm still waiting for a good reson to buy a PSP.

The touch screen control for 2D Worms is a must-have. The DS version will definitely be where it's at.

Make it online and I'd play it until the end of the systems' life-spans--or until its networks go down. Whichever comes first.

Now that is some great news!
I've just recently been playing Worms Armageddon again online, so a new 2d worms (and portable at that) is definitely welcome.
Now I'm curious if this will be basically the same game for both (except for aesthetic details like the 3d backgrounds for the PSP) or if these will be two very different games. Looks like I may end up having two new 2d worms games, not that it's a complaint if they are anything as good as the previous 2d versions.

Awesome news. Online 2D Worms using the DS touchscreen would rock.
