News - Sony Opens Movie Site for PSP Owners

Posted by Ashton Liu at 08:22:46 AM EST on 10.31.2005.

Sony has opened their site, MovieSquare, a site designed for buying and downloading music, movies, and other media for the PSP. Currently, there are 268 titles on the site, with more content being added every month. Downloading a movie costs 1029 yen (~$9 USD) while merely streaming the movie costs 315 yen (~$2.70 USD).

Currently, there spans 268 titles over 12 genres, and while the downloads and streaming of said titles will cost money, if a PSP owner just wants to see a trailer, then it won't cost them a single penny (or yen). The media for this site is downloaded directly to the PC in a compressed file format, and once unzipped can be transferred to the PSP through a USB cable; no extra equipment is required to access this feature.

There is currently no news on whether a feature like this will make it Stateside, but who knows? Anything can happen...

by the same token, the average PSP owner can spend $10-15 to buy a DVD, and then using a little bit of software, rip it to their memory stick. considering there is no extraneous packaging and no physical media, all you are paying for is the right to download the file legally. I would think that they could make the price a little more friendly. then again, the RIAA was pissed a few months back saying the iTunes music store wasn't charging enough per song. how dare we cheat the execs their precious extra money!

Fillerbunny, the iTunes store sells music videos and tv shows, whereas this new Sony store sells entire movies. I think your price comparison is a little misleading, since you're getting two different things.

Yeah, why not make a bunch of cheap, downloadable PS1 games for the thing? There's gotta be some gems from back then that people might enjoy playing on the go.

it's the iTunes store all over again. I guess Sony IS in fact more concerned about competing with other media than games. though I think that the iTunes store has sony whooped when it comes to price; a download is $1.99, beating Sony's price point by about $7.

maybe Sony and Gametap could talk. then they would be supporting games on the blasted thing.

Now if they'd open a site for games, maybe they can stop screwing around. They're so blase' about their lack of software for PSP I might almost mistake them for being Nintendo in 1996.

So will that mean you can stream from that site onto the psp through it's online feature? That would be cool if they did it with tv shows too. Need to wait for someone, stream an ep. of sienfeld for .75. That would be awesome.

It is good to see sony doing cheaper alternatives to there umds though. That explains the giga pack sony is starting to sell.

Good news.

Yet another way to watch the same old crap.

/okay, its cool. but seriously, do we really need so many ways to watch the same movie?

Nice Addition by Sony in my eyes.

So what's the difference with this or just download the movie via other means, and transfer it to the PSP?

"no extra equipment is required to access this feature"

Does that mean no memory card?

It sounds as if you can't actually download the videos to your PSP, you can only stream them (either from your PC to your PSP or from the Internet to your PC to you PSP).

Am I missing something, or is this just stupid?

Nickolai - I don't even wonder... I think Sony's going toe-to-toe with the iPod on this one.

That streaming price seems nice and cheap, but I bet it's impossible to back up the movie, where if you pay the $9 price you could download it permanently and transfer it to your computer.

Either way, I'd rather watch movies on my TV.

Central Park Media is planning to do something like this with their anime titles. Although, that's old news by several months.

You've got to wonder if this is Sony's response to the video Ipod.

as long as the movies you get can be backed up on a PC or something this could be a better deal than UMD movies.
