News - Nintendo whispers about Mother 3

Posted by Ashton Liu at 09:32:18 AM EST on 11.4.2005.

Mother creator Shigesato Itoi recently commented on his website that the Mother 3 game for the Game Boy Advance, which we have not heard about for a good while, is apparently "absolutely alright."

"It looks like its release date will be about one season away, and I'm in the middle of doing many work retreats to get it finished. I'm going to work especially hard for a short while longer to get everything done..."

"...By announcing this, I'm sure I'll receive all sorts of questions, but I'm probably going to stay quiet about Mother 3 until just before its release. I know the importance of publicity, but what I feel is that I want players to REALLY enjoy Mother 3. So until just before the game comes out, I'm going to remain as quiet as possible."

The game seems to be designated for release "in one season" according to his comments, though what exactly this means is unknown.

However, Nintendo is expected to make a formal announcement on this game according to Dengeki Online, so GAF will keep you posted if any such announcement is made.

Well, Miyamoto (I think) kept hinting at us with "You can download Earthbound", hopefully that means we can also play Mother 3 without a translation guide ie: It does get a stateside release (and maybe even a PAL release *wishful thinking*)

After such a long silence, I had assumed the game was cancelled yet again. This is phenomenal news.

Now would be the time to start bombarding NOA with requests for a stateside release. Seeing as they shafted us for Mother 1&2 this game may need the help.

That would be nice, dudeguy.

You hear that, Nintendo? It would be nice if you released EB1&2 on the GBA. It's not like you can't just copy the SNES translation for EB2.

Sigh."

They already did this, it just never got a US release. If you know Japanese however, (or if you don't but it certainly helps) you probably also know that portable games don't have regional lockout so you can import it without much fuss. Otherwise maybe if they give M3 a chance in the US and it does well enough, the M1 & 2 pack will follow?

I hope it's similar, I remember someone that Itoi said he had to rework it or something to fit it on another system (Being the GBA)

But hopefully similar.

What I have to wonder is, does Mother 3 GBA still retain the same basic plot that was announced for the N64/64DD game?

Funny, I see nothing on there that says it'll never come Stateside... Stupid whiners.

In any case, I read about this news at Starmen.net... We're having a big party and hoo-haa over there because of it all.

Man, this makes me giddy.

Why shouldn't money be the biggest motivating factor? They are, after all, a business.

Even so, hot s*** this is good news. I give it five days after its Japanese release until I can find the rom and a passable English translation patch somewhere on this big ol' Internet of ours.

Also, jesusfreakdk, yes that project is amazing.

Wow, this is very good news! It's also interesting on so many levels that it's hard to decide which to tackle first.

The gaming media has been getting more and more divulgive of games. Remember the NES days? Back then, you might easily read about a game, get excited about it, and find that it's in stores already because it's a review of an actual game.

Not so these days. While games are getting longer and longer to develop, their success has also become more important with the huge sums being thrown especially into cutting edge graphics. That is why we see games that are 'revealed' and hyped years before their release, even when there's very little actual game made.

Mother/Earthbound 3/64 was one of those games. It was eagerly awaited and hyped, even though it was barely beyond the concept state, and the platform it was supposed to be on (64DD) was in a similar state. Now that the game is actually being made with a team that's comfortable with the technology that's already there, Shigesato Itoi wants to take the opposite route of EB64 and the whole game industry.

"As quiet as possible." Silence like that is unheard of in games. Because of the internet and of course traditional game media, gamers know the games they're going to play from beginning to end months before they're actually playing the game. Even the revolutionary Hideo Kojima used the Tanker scene to campaign MGS2 on a massive scale, even though the actual game turned out to be something quite different.

Even when the game is released, there might not be a massive marketing blitz on Nintendo's behalf as per Itoi's comments. Then again, there might be: "until just before its release". Nevertheless, it's very encouraging that one of gaming's veterans and innovators has the courage to go against a trend that is spoiling games for us before we have the chance to play them.

I WANT MY MOMMY 3!!

And 1 and 2 would be nice too as someone mentioned. Whenever I play SSBM it always makes me want to bust out the ol' EarthBound cart. Good times.

Oh, and all EB fans should check out the EarthBound music remix project at this website, it's spiffy:

Don't you guys understand? Nintendo's reluctance twords releasing Mother 3 in the US is just their way of saying that they want us to download illegal ROMs and play them on our emulator. Well, at least that's the way I'm going to look at it. They'll make up for the money loss by releasing Mario Party 27,618.

Seriously though, while I am a big Nintendo supporter, I am also quite pissed off by the fact that they're so stubborn about releasing certain games in the US. I mean, Mother 3 and Mother 1 2 could never be a huge mainstream success in America, but the games do have a decent-sized cult following. If Nintendo cared about their fans, they'd release Mother 3 in the US. However, from their perspective, money is the only motivating factor in releasing a game, and Earthbound's failure in the US market (which was ten years ago, before RPGs were even moderately popular in the US) is reason enough for them to simply ignor the idea of ever introducing the series to the US market again.

No US release? Who let the alarmist in? Let's just sit tight for a bit huh?

You can't believe how happy this game makes me as Earthbound is essentially my favorite game. I can't wait to see this game come out ANYWHERE, and then I'll worry about getting it. God I'm so happy.

I want Mother 3 to come with static clings to put over the other screen, for people who are playing the game on DS.

The idea of a GBA game doing this amuses me, and I can't think of a more appropriate game to do so, heh.

By "absolutely alright" he means "no chance in Hell for a US release".

Maybe before it comes out over here they'll see fit to release the GBA version of the other two.

It's all because he expected us to stay occupied by leveling enough to buy the seaside house in Onett.

It's not "absolutely alright" if the game (Mother 3 in general) has been in development for what I believe has been over a decade.
