News - US release of FF VII: Advent Children delayed to 2006

As if official news on the US release of the movie coming to a trickle in recent months wasn't enough of a hint, it's now official: Square Enix has delayed the US release of their upcoming feature film sequel,
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, to an as-yet-unannounced date in 2006.
This news comes from one of our own readers who is an employee at EB Games. The movie was removed from the EB Games computers' coming soon list a few days ago, and when home office was contacted about it, the word was that Square Enix had pushed back both the DVD and UMD versions of the movie to "TBA 2006."
He also tells us that he spoke with his store's Sony representative about the matter, and that he (the rep) had heard rumors of Square Enix wanting to add special content to the UMD version of
Advent Children, something along the lines of a surprise
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII unveiling (though in what form is unknown). Admittedly, that would be pretty cool if it were true, but it sounds kind of fishy to me... and he also mentions to take that rumor with a grain of salt and remember that it's just that: a rumor.
Still, whatever the reason,
Advent Children has been officially delayed until sometime in 2006, and it can be wholeheartedly said that Square Enix and/or Sony has/have done an inexcusably terrible job getting the the film out to US fans on time, special UMD features or not.
(As far as I'm concerned, the only thing that could justify all these delays is a limited theatrical release once the movie finally does make it here... hell, I'd wait 'til 2007 if it meant we'd be getting a theatrical release. ^_^)
As always, GAF will keep you updated with the latest on this and other late-breaking news stories.

My main concern is the voice acting. The Japanese voice dubbing/acting for this movie was absolutly "Perfect"~ The fighting sounds, the voices, it was what made the movie twice as good to me. Since the day I first saw it, I had that feeling the English voices might ruin the US dub.
The voices and acting from ffx, ffx-2, ff the movie, they were all completly horrible. Take tidus, yuna, and the main girl in the movie, they sucked. Simply put, Dirty blonde voices for the girls, that lame gay sounding tidus voice. The voice overs were completly horrible.
The Japanese voices for tifa, cloud, aeris, in this AC were just "Superb". I don't see how they will get such perfect voice overs for the EN version. That is my worry. If the voice acting stinks, who cares about a theatrical or a late release? Not I~
I don't speak JP, however I will take the JP version with EN subs over a horribly dubbed EN version anyday of this movie.

I thought this was legitimate news until you mentioned that it came from the home office of EB Games, a source riddled with indecision can not possibly been deemed legitimate on news of matters such as this. In working with Funcoland for several years I can tell you that a great deal of misinformation is passed thru the ranks of executives in the gaming industry. Half of that is deliberate and half is just a lack of information.
And even the second source of a Sony representative is no more accurate because their only job is to make sure that stores are advertising the correct merchandise. In my dealings with these people, it was easy to figure out that their knowledge of the innerworkings of the company they work for is very limited and far more than rumor... more like conjecture.
Besides which the story is obvious, (remember that Sony doesn't have a lot to do with this) so either EB was too quick to come up with a release date, or the official date was changed to avoid EB and Gamestop from misleading the public. There are items in both company's computers that don't even and never did exist.

I should note, this really isn't, new, per say, Amazon's listed it as a 2006 release for quite awhile.
Anyhow, the Crises Core bit, sounds like a complete and utter rumor to me. Fact of the matter is that Sony is distributing it in America, not Square. Sony doesn't have much to gain by pushing the DVD into 2006 for the sake of a game demo.
Oh yeah sure, they premote a PSP game and that might help PSP sales in a miniscule manner. *Anybody who buys the UMD disk is already going to have a PSP.* However they miss out on the Christmas sales, which would have really helped move the product.
However, a limited theatrical release, would indeed justify pushing the title back to 2006. It may not actually help sales of the DVD all that much, but it would get the franchise a lot of publicity and make it easier for Final Fantasy products to be sold afterward.

I've been following AC for since I heard about it two years ago. Everytime a release date came up, well,... it passed us by. Now we acutally know there is a movie because of the release in Japan. I am extremely disappointed in Square-Enix and Sony for the delays. Sure, there may be some "special features" they may add but the fact that we keep seeing a delay could mean we'll never see the DVD or UMD released here.

Yeah, I downloaded it the day it came out. ^^; I'm still buying the US release... whenever it comes out.

Oh well, another delay and reason to encourage downloading instead of buying. I do hope if some of you d/l you will aslo buy though, nothing is wrong with that. I do it all the time for anime not out in the states yet.

Now I'm really glad I downloaded it. A theatrical release would be cool, but only if it were subtitled.

Lelola.net had a few days ago that it was delayed till January 10th in order to try to get a limited theatrical release. ^^ I really hope so. I think they just redid the dub though. >.

Why bother releasing it at all now?
Is there anyone left out there who is remotely interested in the movie who hasn't already seen it?"
Maybe some want to own it as a DVD, and some don't even have the opportunity to download this. So yeah, it's pretty important to release it over here

Shame about the delay, the movie was incredible. Everything Spirits Within should have been, and more. The story is fine, it certainly held up the action, I'm not sure what people were expecting. It's impossible to please games fans, though. We should know this by know. FFVII:AC is how to do a game to movie RIGHT, and I couldn't be happier with how it turned out.

Who CARES.
They released merchandise for Advent Children in America, what, two or three f***ing years ago?
The fact that people are still holding their breath for a U.S. release of something that wasn't THAT spectacular is just wild.
And I'm a FFVII fan for God's sake.

is not that I hate cloud or the cast have not enough screen times
it jsut that, IMO, the story suck... or better yet, there's no story whatsoever in it!!
I never understand why everyone so hyped overthis like it's the 2nd coming or something. Even spriti within have a better and understandable plot than just flashy graphics with sword fights

People have been eating themselves over a new Chrono game for a long time now. But the whole delay does stink. I was doing good at not even considering alternate possibilities to waiting... but if it's going to be delayed that long... not so sure.

They're gonna wait until we're eating ourselves, then they'll release it.
same goes for the next chrono game

I'm hoping the reason for the delay has something to do with the translation/dubbing of the Last Order anime OVA that came with the deluxe version of Advent Children (which was previously not going to be included with the American release). At least the delays would make sense if that were the case.

If you didn't like Cloud, then you're not going to love this movie, plain and simple. Also--if you were expecting this game to be a smaller version of the game, then get real. There's no way they can squeeze a 4 disc RPG into one movie. Instead they have to try to make as many people as happy as possible, and I think they did a damn good job with what they could (feasibly) do in a movie format.
Would I like to have seen all the characters get as much screen time as Cloud? You knows it, but instead they tried to make it a better movie by featuring mostly one character as to not confuse the less FF7 savy of us out there, hence making more people like it. Not everyone out there would appreciate more allusions to events in the game, or more character cameos. (In fact, I know people who didn't like a lot of what was in the movies for the reason that they didn't play FF7 much/at all.
Sure, you could make the argument that this should be a movie aimed specifically at FF7 fans, but for Square it's financially smarter to make a movie like this, even more so when you look at the result of their last movie.
I loved FF7:AC, and if you tell me I'm dumb for liking it, then you're only resulting to immature name calling, and I retort with "Yeah, well you're dumb because you like (insert something you think is awesome such as Halo 1 or 2, Dragon Quest, 50 Cent, Garth Brooks, etc.)."

Definitely could've done without a fight or two for more content... but I still like it.
And it's more about Cloud and Tifa than Denzel
Anyways we better get something extra in the DVD version (UMD can go to heck)... I can wait though, I imported at release.

Eh, you're not missing out on anything.
The main cast shows up for 2 minutes, and then vanishes for the rest of the movie.
It focuses on Cloud and this kid that was never even IN FF7 to begin with (Denzel); he literally gets all of the screentime that Cloud doesn't get, with a little Reno and Rude here or there.
It's depressing how crapped upon the established characters get. I mean, one or two lines here or there, then they vanish for the rest of the movie.

Times like this I am glad that I'm not a die-hard FF fan.
But if it came to theatres, I would probably watch it.

I was under the impression that the movie was out already and it sucked. Anyway, I hope they take this extra time out to make it unsucky.

"You heard any official announcements of voice actors? That's right. I think they FORGOT to dub it. ;)"
Nah. They'll take the cast from KH2 and use them for Advent Children, or vice-versa. We already have a (partial?) voice listing for the US version of KH2, including Aerith and Yuffie's VAs.
From what I hear, AC was initially delayed from September 14 in order to re-do the dub. I wonder if Crisis Core content is the REAL reason for this delay... I doubt it. Can someone say "Last Order?"

Well, I know a lot of people that were holding out on the temptation to download the movie because they were holding out on hopes that it would be here in decent time. I'm included in that.
I'm sure now the majority of my friends will download it, and I'll most likely watch it. Sure, I'll buy it when it comes out - but couldn't they have been working on these "extras" or even the localization at the same time the finishing touches were being placed on the Japanese version?

Ash thinks its a limited theatrical release. That's possible, but I think there's a different explanation. You heard any official announcements of voice actors? That's right. I think they FORGOT to dub it. ;)
