News - E3 Booth Babes Now Extinct

Oh, a true tragedy in the world of gamers - it seems there will be no more E3 booth babes, starting at E3 2006. How do we know? Check out this new entry in the exhibitor's handbook:
Material, including live models, conduct that is sexually explicit and/or sexually provocative, including but not limited to nudity, partial nudity and bathing suit bottoms, are prohibited on the Show floor, all common areas, and at any access points to the Show. ESA, in its sole discretion, will determine whether material is acceptable.
Does this mean E3 will wither away and die? No, but don't count on as much flirting while you watch
Nintendo show their Revolution titles.

Agh, so sick of political correctness, crys of sexual harrasment are getting out of hand, just being human is going to be a crime next.
This new ruling is lame, the "sole discretion" part sucks, if they're going to have a rule it should be clear and definded not this bogus discretion crap.
"sexually provocative"??? ANYTHING could be, that depends on the viewer. Some people might even find a moose is.
I'm tired of bogus hypocritical Christian stupidity.

The games industry has such a poor image in the eyes of the general public, that they have to do even more to get people's acceptance. So I guess this is a logical step.

Because both events are shows doesn't mean they are perfectly comparable. Unless car shows also have women dressed up like elves and almost all the audience is men. Also, it's not as if the West doesn't percieve Japan as weird. Men wanting womens' panties was mainstream enough to make it into vending machines, but I'd guess the rest of the world is still wondering what the hell is going on there.

Getting rid of the babes makes games more mainstream? Hardly. Car shows. Full of them. And cars sure aren't mainstream. Nope.
Look at the TGS, just as babelicious if not moreso than E3. But of course games are hardly mainstream in Japan either.

I think 'respectable' is the image the organisers are trying to get across with this new ruling.

I actually think this is good news as itll make the game developers out there want to make their booths and games look even more impressive and attractive since the ladies are out.

I am concerned about the content of games but games often provide context that makes what's happening make more sense. For example, a scantily clad girl playing volleyball is still possibly sexist, but at least she's playing a sport that often requires a bikini. The bikini girls at E3 are just standing there, completely out of context.

ttfp 1.25.2006 at 12:08:22 PM
Surely people should be more concerned about the dodgy content of particular games, rather than the dubious marketing and PR tactics?

I doubt this will make much difference at all, with the possible exception that companies may be more careful with their floor shows.

Gee, now 3d Realms might not even bother to show up this year.
Put me in the "not sorry to see them go" camp. I always thought it was cheap. Perhaps everyone can focus on the games this time around.

wolvenone 1.25.2006 at 12:43:59 AM
Actually, I say, good riddence. Each and every year it seemed to me that the "booth babes," were actually taking more and more attention away from the actual games. E3 after all is a gaming show, the focus should be on the games, not what company has the best booth babes.
That, and I also felt that the booth babes only really served to reinforce negetive stereotypes about gamers and the gaming industry. The E3's been getting more and more mainstream press coverage in the past few years, and if the non-gaming communities only real glance at the industry is reminiscent of a lonely teenagers fantasy, then it cannot possibly help gamers gain mainstream acceptence.

I'm glad but not sure about the way they achieved the result. In my fantasy world booth babes aren't outlawed, they are simply not hired because E3 is about video games and the attendees don't need models to be stimulated.

This country is RETARDED!
Blowing up people, shooting them in the head, decapitations, "wife-swapping" tv, ALL these things are acceptible entertainment.
But NAKED TITTIES? No way.
Get me OUT of here!!!!!

fillerbunny9 1.24.2006 at 05:09:31 PM
this is really kinda silly. I have absolutely no interest in booth babes, but this seems to be lashing out against near nudes, as it is aiming for nudity and bathing suit bottoms on the floor. note that this is not JUST about booth babes, but about OTHER content as well. "Material, including live models" means it is not LIMITED to just live models, but is inclusive of them.
I guess that when someone tries to make a sequal to the Man Game, they'll have problems showing it on the floor. Oh wait, it would need to be sexually provocative first.

stuff 1.24.2006 at 04:25:40 PM
I like to look at babes as much as the next guy. But last year E3 did have some girls that were down right slutty. Like the girls from The SIMS (I believe it was the Sims). They had their little set looking like a bedroom and they were having a slumber party I guess.
And they would get guys up on bed and they'd be all over the guy. That kind of stuff is really not necessary.

mystikal 1.24.2006 at 08:29:19 AM
I really don't think this means much. It wasn't like there were many semi-nude women there anyway. Just a whole lot of hot women in exotic attire and they will still be there. Nintendo's women (My model of all was at Nintendo's booth last year, I should have hit it) wear red collared shirts and black pants. Not exactly "Sexually Provocative".
I also don't see how they can stop Namco's dancers from wearing their stuff. Nothing will seriously change hear.

This year is gonna be my first E3. Not only was i gonna be around the industries best, and see games before they are released, but around some extremely hgot women. This news dissapoints me. Are they trying to make it more family friendly? Aren't all the people who attend E3 over 18?

I'm glad for this. There are reasons why G4, a so-called "video game channel" completely sucks. The biggest reason is because they're targeting the older-teen/yound-adult male demographic. They're programming would be much better if they targeted gamers in general regardless of their gender or age (but you know that's never going to happen).
With booth babes gone, E3 will be more welcoming to a large variety of gamers. And besides, everyone can see right through the cheap sex-appeal. It's a lost cause.

See, I'm with the others... I don't care if y'all keep the Booth Babes or not (like I said waaay down at the beginning, the most I can really think to say about it is "silly," I don't get up in arms either way).
But I'm *all* for giving us some Booth Bishounen to look at too. Hell, I'll be generous, even throw in some Booth Beefcake for the gals who don't like the bishie types, heretics though they may be.

I honestly can't say I care... I never understood why anyone cared. Most of us know real women who we actually have a chance with so what's the point of meeting some hot babe who doesn't give a rat's @$$ who you are and doesn't know crap about the product she's trying to promote?

cainkid 1.24.2006 at 12:38:42 AM
you are perfectly correct ebwiz.
in most cases of "women as sex objects" people tend to forget that the women in pictures, models and actresses and all that. These people are paid and paid well for what they do, and are probably more peeved then the people who just want to stare at them that they will be missing out on another work oppurtunity.
it's becoming a crime to want to look good for people.
Control is okay, I can understand not wanting something too skimpy out on the floor. But at the same time it seems kinda weird to say that these people have to be superdressed up, and it's very sexist indeed.
oh well, as long as the world, and america in particular, loves to polarize issues instead of looking at them we will never find a correct solution to anything.

Erm... is it just me, or are people taking this far too seriously? And no, I'm not talking about the people who will miss them.
Seriously, all this talk about "the industry image" and "sex objects" makes me seriously question you're sense of buisness. These women are paid models. It's their job, and they understand it as such. Isn't it... you know... more sexist to tell them what they can and cannot do? Just a thought... and I'm not even saying that because I care so much as I don't get why everyone's starting to take a moral high ground on this... I'm willing to bet you didn't even give two thoughts on the issue until it was brought up. Seriously, booth babes or not, who cares? Sure, Sex sells and it works, but as a gamer, I was looking at it for the games anyway, so the inclusion/exclusion of booth babes has no effect on me, but I'm certainly not going to sing praises because of it either.

I second that Drakken. Sure I don't mind if there are "Booth Babes" in the sense that they're there to promote a product and being informative. Give me the same "pretty girls" but dressed like, well, those Nintendo "Booth Babes" (at least from what I've seen in videos and pictures). They were just dressed decently. White shirts and pants unlike those from, say, Namco who were dressed in mini shorts and tight shirts (SRS girls). I can't say I've ever liked the concept of girls playing hooker dress up (for lack of a better term). It all seemed like some Arcade/Hooters/Strip Club combo.

jesusfreakdk 1.23.2006 at 09:30:23 PM
Well, in my eyes BBs just for the sexual attraction is iffy, but if you're advertising a game like, say, Dead or Alive, it makes sense, right? And I doubt most of the gamers at E3 are there for the babes. They're just a pleasant distraction, and sometimes the source of amusement. But like several other people have said, you can still have gorgeous girls at booths and stuff, they'll just be clothed like...normal people.
Even if you're a person that's all about "personality is first, looks don't mean a thing", attractive people generally make things look more attractive. Of course, if the game itself was horrible then no amount of models could make up for it.

Heh heh heh... Good call, hailthed.
It may not just be the morality issue, but a little of the portrayal of women as sexual objects. Beats me.
But I don't care, either. To me, E3 is about the games and not the cheap tricks companies pull to get your attention. I say good riddance. We won't have to see another stupid "Booth babes" article.

Oh no, the booth babes are gone... whatever will I do?
I just can't see people being seriously perturbed by this, but I also know I'm underestimating the power of the heterosexual male libido. Meh, Meh, Meh. (Also, it'd be interesting to see what E3 would be like if the tables were indeed turned as dragon girl has posited below...)

I for one won't really miss the partial nudity--it always made me laugh when I'd be reading up on E3 and come across pictures of girls in skimpy clothes posing with some of the biggest nerds around. But I'll live without. I think it's actually a pretty good thing that they're making the expo "more decent." I don't really want the babes gone--I just want them clothed, is all.

What is this, an attempt at "cleaning up" the industry's image in the face of Hillary! and Lieberman? Oh, geez. As if the auto industry has a PR problem because of what goes on at car shows. Somehow I don't think a woman being paid to dress up as a video game character and entertain the geeks in the video game press for 3 days is worse than, say, the occasional wet t-shirt contest at car shows.

That's kinda silly if they're really banning "booth babes" (and this is from someone who, ah, has no interest in booth babes and thinks *they're* pretty silly too).
From what's posted here though, it looks like they might just be cracking down on the really explicit stuff? The models almost completely hanging out of their tops, etc...? Note that it doesn't say all live models are prohibited, just those that are sexually explicit or "sexually provocative" are.
I guess in the end it'll come down to just how they define sexually provocative.
