News - Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (DS) announced, first screens and trailer

Posted by Josh Freund at 03:03:03 PM EST on 3.23.2006.

At Satoru Iwata's GDC keynote address just minutes ago, Nintendo's president revealed Zelda DS, now officially known as The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.

It looks like the top screen will display a map for the majority of the time, and the action will be displayed on the bottom. The game features a cel-shaded graphical style similar to The Wind Waker.

More details as they come, but for now, here are the first images and trailer of PH:

I was actually impressed with the way Capcom handheld the previous handheld Zelda titles. Though I'm glad Nintendo have taken up the reins again, I really hope the sailing sections are made more exciting. Maybe more sea-traffic to keep things from getting "I think I'll make a cup of tea" boring.

Never played Oracle, and while Minish Cap was good, it certainly wasn't anything that screamed "amazing". In fact, it was kind of boring in a lot of areas.

Very short, too.

Last time I checked, I'd rank the Oracle games and the The Minish Cap amongst the console incarnations too. Link's Awakening was fantastic, but I don't even know if I liked it better than the Capcom games.

You know what, I just realized that the last time a Nintendo first party made a portable Zelda game, it was Link's Awakening.

Last time I checked, I'd rank that game amongst the console incarnations.

This one just keeps getting more promising.

*joygasm* Shigeru, will you marry me?

I seriously need to get some funds together, SO many games, no money, and not enough time to play them all! How is one man supposed to play Kingdom Hearts II, FFXII, read the news on E3 without having a heart attack of joy, DDR, and practice Guitar Hero all at once!? *ponders a way to grow more arms and an additional brain*

Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, and Metroid Prime: Hunters guarunteed my DS some life for a few more months, now it looks like its life was extended a few more years. ;)

anchors aweigh is how the nautical phrase is correctly spelled.
+0 karma
blkstarr 3.24.2006 at 04:17:41 AM
"Anchors aweigh!!!"

You know, I originally said the same thing, but as I thought about it, I realized that this spelling could work as well.

If the anchor is used to "weigh" the boat to a particular location, one must remove it in order to continue forward. Therefore, the anchor can now by understood as without it's weight, hence the "a" which is commonly used to convey the word "without".

From this perspective, "aweigh" makes more sense than I originally thought. I have to tell you, Nintendo almost took me to school on this one. I suppose I could have looked it up, but I'd completely forgotten about it until you brought it up haha.

(From the looks of that totally unnecessary rant though, they STILL schooled me.)

I'm never doubting Nintendo again.

animetayl - It's the music that's from LttP. When I heard that dark world theme I immediately fell in love with this game. I can't get over how pretty it looks on the DS! I also just came to the realization that because this game is on a handheld and not a console, all of the idiots who made lame "Cel-da" jokes about Wind Waker's "Grafix being teh gays" will be silent and pay no attention to the Cel-Shading.

Holy crapoly... I want this game. I loved the Wind Waker's style, and as much as I adore the realistic one of TP, I had hoped that Wind Wakerish Link hadn't been booted off the wayside. In fact, Nintendo did exactly what I had wanted in the first place. Keep the console versions realistic and gorgeously rendered, and have the handheld versions Wind Waker style. Amazingly, this trailer reminded me quite a bit of LttP for some reason. Maybe it was the dungeons.

I must say Now I think Miyamoto's decision of setting Aunoma on the Series was a brilliant one. His game designing abilities now are beginning to show fantastic skill. Many prob. had probs of implementing "innovative" usage along with keeping a unified interface which Aunoma has def. surpassed here. (* Dreams of TS fighting and map traversing GoldenAxe DS*)

Anyways, the Touch screen fighting and the Ship thing is undeniably genious and actually does something I even doubted of the DS, how it's so called innovation can really just blow us on such a scale with seemingly inituitive stuff.

I adore it so far and this actually is doing something MKS, AC: WW and Hunters kind of never went to take strides to implement so where they took a reserved path more-or-less and just to advance gameplay a tad bit.

I am def. looking forward to this.

Oh my God. What a magnificent trailer. Zelda is awesomer than a swimming pool full of cherry Jello and cheerleaders.

Did you notice how they opened? Drawing on the screen they made a big "Z" and hesitated before connecting the final line to make the hourglass. And how ingenius of them to base this game's gimmick around the common X-in-a-square that ends up on just about every DS game where drawing is incorporated. YOU CAN WRITE NOTES ON THE MAP!! And I adore how it blends the best of 3D Zeldas with the best of 2D Zeldas.

To say I'm merely pleased or enthusiastic is to scoff at the swimming pool full of cherry Jello and cheerleaders.

I was fully expecting a corny DS title for the Zelda DS game "Dream of Sunlight" "Dance of Shadows" etc.

Phantom Hourglass sounds kinda neat, I just hope it doesn't mean time traveling again.

Actually the more I think about it, the cooler "Dance of Shadows" sounds. Oh well.

blkstarr, if I'm right and this game has been in development since BEFORE it was announced at GDC 2004 (i.e. since development on Wind Waker was completed) then a 2006 release seems quite possible.

"Well, at least they said that this will be released by the end of 2006. Looks like this will be the "Mario Kart DS" of DS this christmas."

Ha, yeah... that's why I even threw that little statement in. Of course, it's merely for my own good - realizing how often Zelda games released later than expected and not wanting to continually be crushed by ANOTHER Zelda title, I figured it would be best to ignore Nintendo from the start. One can only hope this makes it though.

If it does, Nintendo could potentially have a huge Winter season with the launch of a new console and an increasingly incredible handheld in the DS.

I gather that a lot of people will be disappointed that this was Nintendo's big gun at GDC.

I also gather that a lot of people are idiots.

I was beginning to get a bit worried about the existence of the Zelda DS title since we hadn't truly heard anything on it for quite some time, but I suppose that absence meant nothing. (Maybe this gives me a bit more hope for the supposed 2D Metroid DS title as well) I can't wait for impressions of this one at E3, though a switch the bottom screen for gameplay should bear more fruit than simply tossing the boomerang. And for all intents and purposes, I believe that it will.

Also, I'm astounded at how beautifully the Wind Waker style (beautiful in its own right on the GC) translates to the DS screen. It looks great in that video, and on the DS screen, it should look notably better.

No way this game makes 2006, but I'm anticipating it either way. Until then, I'll continue dreaming that this game could approach the quality of our N64 pasts.

I like how Nintendo has given up the top-bottom screenshot format for DS games. Even they can't figure out a decent use for the second screen.

Game looks somewhat interesting, but we need non-blurry/non-shakycam shots.

How interesting? Look at thos screens from a distance the games look 2D. Now I've watched the video I'm more excited it's actually 3D.

Still looks cool, I'd buy that for a dollar (or more).

Go on Death, get yourself a nice DS Lite, you won't regret it.

I was just remembering how Nintendo was saying a while back (I think before Twilight Princess was announced) that they were making a direct sequel to Wind Waker... It appears this is it! Looky here, it was announced almost exactly two years ago at the GDC by Eiji Aonuma (Who happens to making THIS game).

http://www.gamespot.com/gamecube/action/thelegendofzelda/news.html?sid=6092202&mode=news

Now that I've finally convinced MYSELF that this is the direct sequel to Wind Waker I've been waiting for...

I'm now officially more excited for this game than Twilight Princess.

Somebody's going to stone me to death for saying that aren't they?

If they limit it to easy to control sailing battles, I'm down. I THINK that shot before the sailing footage showed you drawing your sailing route on the map. If that is how it works, I'm fine with that.

Mikey, you have noticed that most of the Nintendo's own 1st party development teams have been really quiet for the last (couple of) years. Some of their biggest games (like Metroid and Fire Emblem) have been done by 2nd party devs, not by 1st party.

So WHAT do you think all those teams have done? Just sitting around drinking some tea all day long?

I'm impressed with the high level of polish the graphics have. The DS is capable of some pretty good looking games if in the hands of the right developer. No surprise Nintendo has to show others how it's done.

I was just thinking... Where has Nintendo been getting the resourses (development teams) for all of these awesome games they've been cranking out lately? I mean, I know they were never in a rut, but lately it seems like they have a HUGE number of games in development all at once. Or does it just seem like more than usual because I'm anticipating nearly every one of them?
