News - New Castlevania DS to be revealed in next Nintendo Power

Posted by Josh Freund at 04:55:20 PM EST on 3.28.2006.

The latest Nintendo Power drops a hint that a new Castlevania title (which was first mentioned to be in the works in Famitsu magazine last year) will be revealed in the next issue of Nintendo Power. Here's a quote from the mag:

"We can’t tell you what’s on the next issue’s cover but trust us - we’ve go the biggest scoop of the year so far...As mysterious as a new moon, the follow-up to one of 2005’s best DS titles is a whip-smart adventure that you won’t want to miss."

This is good news for Dawn of Sorrow fans. It brings up many questions, though. Will this continue on with the storyline from Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow, or will this take place during a different period of Castlevania history? Which character/s will we get to play as this time? And most importantly, what will the subtitle be?

We'll just have to wait till next month's issue to find out.

What could possibly be fishy about the actual cover for the magazine? What the hell."

Because if that's the next issue, and it's a July issue (which I understand as magazine can be labeled as much as 3 months after it's shelf debut)... why does it say display until August? Monthly magazines are only given a shelf life of a month, so why is it asking the store to violate policy and display it for four months starting in April when that isn't possible? By May the store would have already written the leftovers magazines off as unsold merchandise.

And why is it only a partial scan?

I mean the screenshot scans are fake, although there is something fishy about that pic as well.

No, that's the cover from Gamepro and it's quite real.

The rumor is that the game is the infamous "final battle" of the Demon Castle Wars, when Julius (and friends) destroy Dracula in 1999. The rumor started when IGA mentioned in an interview that the story had been written already. So it is very likely that is the case, but as with anything IGA says he could have changed his mind before this article came up. But...

*For certain, it will be 2D
*It will have nothing to do with CotM (consider that game DOA)
*The "scans" you have seen up util now have been fake

Here's hoping for a prequel to Aria of Sorrow. I want to know what the heck happened with Julius Belmont and Dracula in 1999.

Why do you think is a 2D game. As far as i remember, in an interview of Dawn of Sorrow they told something like that would be the last 2D castlevania or something like that... correct me if i'm wrong...

It's very clear.

The new moon refers to a new LUNAR game ^_^

They sure liked Dragon Song because they would like to use the whip on Dragon Song's developers :P

Dizzy, if that's true, you just missed out on the second best CV ever. You're right, the art style pales, but the in-game graphics are outstanding.

"darkage: what the f*** would Simon be doing carrying around the kind of stupid ass s*** Alucard does?"

Killing monsters! :D

Good, but please, Konami, for the love of all that is great in Castlevania, DITCH emoSoma and the crappy, generic anime artstyle.

Go back to the that chick's paintings, please.

Please?

It stars Julius Belmont. There are scans floating around that say it. Castlevania: Dual Moons.

the funny thing would be if it has nothing to do with CV, and they just made those comments to deliberately mislead us.

(not to knock on CV, because i love it.)

i have a gut feeling its going to be one of these three belmonts

ricter

juste

or julius

juste is most likely because harmony was supposed to surpass symphony in IGA's eyes

bjork and sugoi, you guys are totally right. Cards ALWAYS suck and 2D can be done with polygons, just like Konami themselves already established with Contra: Shattered Soldier.

I hope they're hinting at more than just a CV in that blurb. "Whip-smart" doesn't make much sense if we're talking about Soma or Alucard. How about a Simon comeback? But with better control than traditional Belmonts, and an inventory to rival Alucard.

You know, Circle of the Moon with the ability to manipulate the cards on the bottom screen would be really, really awesome.

sugoi 3.28.2006 at 05:49:28 PM
Dear IGA:

I'm still looking forward to you realizing that 2D (gameplay) just works better for the Castlevania series as a whole. If you want to bring up that thing about high-res 2D art assets being too expensive to make, I might remind you that we'd be perfectly happy with a 2.5D hybrid along the lines of Viewtiful Joe or Klonoa.

Your team has some of the best talent in the industry; don't waste any more of their efforts trying to make Castlevania into something it isn't.

Love,
Sug.

PS: New DS Castlevania will be great, I'm sure. Please make it a little longer (and harder) this time though, eh?

You know, I don't even care if it doesn't make sense storywise... I'd love another Sorrow title. Soma and Alucard are pretty much the best playable characters the series has ever seen, and the Sorrow titles rank as the very best CV titles in my opinion...

bjork 3.28.2006 at 05:19:41 PM
If it's a followup to CotM, they need to not have that card system in there.

Oh my!

A new Castlevania game on a Nintendo handheld? Who knew?
