Sony recently announced that they are stopping production of their first game console, the original PlayStation. The system, which saw launch in December 1994, stayed alive for 11 years before finally having the plug pulled after two more systems were released by its parent company.
Having reportedly surpassed 100 million sales worldwide, Sony has said that the end of production does not necessarily mean the end of availability; the system will continue to be available. That's not to mention the recently announced official PlayStation emulator for the PSP, which should keep PlayStation games alive for a while longer.

My ol' 96 psx still runs well. I just played suikoden on it today. I never understood all the quality complaints with sony stuff, I guess I was just lucky.

Uh dscuber9000, hate to tell you this, but they already stated awhile back that they were going to keep making the ps2 till 2010. Heck, with the way the ps1 was still going for 11 years, the ps2 may be around even longer.

Why are they still making them? The PS2's lifespan is about to end! Why wait for the PS3 to stop making PS1s?

But what will the japanese spend extra cash on?
I love how jesusfreak mentions FFtactics, that's the only reason I have a Sony console.

Hope you didn't just jinx yourself :p
The first launch ps2 took a dive in... 2003? My dad's launch ps2 is just now starting to crap out, so that's not bad.

I still have my old original PlayStation from many years ago. Crashes very seldom and still runs Final Fantasy Tactics great. My PS2 which I got near launch hasn't crashed yet either. It's uncanny.

They only tagged me for two PSX units, a version 2 with the cooling plate and a PSOne. Not too bad, considering some people bought 5 or more from defects.

I can see the headline now... Newsflash Gamestop considers Gameboy, Gameboy Color and PS1 games obsolete, stops carrying classic video games altogether! It's not far off my children.

Just now? I thought they'd put the old boy to rest a few years ago.
Maybe this, FINALLY, means no more stupid new PSOne sports games sitting unsold in the game case at work : P
