Last week's sales: 411,307

As you can see, there were a bunch of major new releases this week. Most notable is the long-long-long-long-long-awaited Mother 3, the game that originally started out as a N64 project. As expected, it did well, selling just over 200,000 copies in the few days since its release.

Other major releases included Dragon Quest Yangus, a Dragon Quest VIII spinoff starring the barbarian from said title, Treasures of Aht Urhgan, the PS2 version of the latest FF XI expansion, DBZ Shin Budokai, the fighting series' first PSP iteration, and Okami, the very unique-looking game that lets you be a painting wolf god.

The usual batch of DS games rounded out the chart, with Brain Training 2 selling just about the same as it did last week. It's quite something to think that both Brain Training titles will happen to pass 2 million total sales on the same week (next week), considering they launched over 7 months apart. Last, but not least on the DS front, Animal Crossing passed 2.5 million total sales this week.

Notably absent from the top 10 is Tetsuya Mizuguchi's much-hyped Ninety-Nine Nights for Xbox 360, which debuted at #11, selling about 27,000 copies.

Looking ahead: Winning Eleven 10 (PS2), Tetris DS, and Naruto 4 (DS), along with a number of semi-major PSP releases are due out next week, so expect more big numbers.

I just noticed FF12 is no longer on the top ten. I guess everyone who wanted it really did buy it right away.

The "guy" who worked on Earthbound's localization also worked on Ocarina of Time afterwards, but other than that, yeah, he hasn't done a whole lot with games since.

Ninety-Nine Nights sold 27,000 copies? That's one for every Xbox 360 in Japan. Good job! I hope it's a good game. Any reviews?

Final Fantasy XI, the least popular Final Fantasy ever, even 4 years in the running.

Current numbers indicate the games has 500,000 users worldwide. And Aht Urghan is an attempt to bring back former users as well as attract new ones.

Looks like no one in Japan is buying it much.

I wonder how would WoW do there?

It's so far better than Earthbound. I've only played through Chapter One but I can honestly say that it's extremely emotional and way darker than the Mother 2. The only hard part of translating it is that the game is FILLED with puns. This just means that the translation team needs to be witty, which I think the Mario and Luigi team could probably pull off. Or get the guy from Earthbound back. He hasn't worked on anything since then.

Selling 70,000 games per day (Mother 3 was released on April 20) is not bad, especially for an old platform and for a title that had 3 or so years without any update (since the project for N64 was cancelled until 2000).

They probably sold out of Mother 3s and had to re stock. It's not like Dragon quest that they release on a public holiday with 3 million discs printed.

Yeah, only 200,000 for Mother was a bit surprising. It'll be interesting to see how it fares this week. The marketing campaign and pre-release hype for it hasn't been too big, so it may instead get more sales due to word of mouth, people learning that it has been released and that it's good.

Actually i'm rather disappointed with the Mother 3 sales. Heck, that game has been on the top10 famitsu most wanted list for YEARS. 200,000 first week is crap imo.

Btw, im a fan so don't flame, X)

If Okami's sales were as dissapointingas people say it is. I guess we will be seeing "Street Fighter II: Ultimate Imapct Edition 3000 Extreme" or "Mega Man Collection Part 2: Now with a new Menu Screen" hahaha. Too bad though, the Okami did look intriguing.

Really hoping mother3 pulls a million, but I'm not too sure that will happen, 500K more than possible though. Now bring it here NOA, or we boycott...something.

Okami? What are you guys babbling about? It did very well. Note that a Dragon Quest spinoff sold only twice as much. What were you expecting, a million-seller?

Also, NNN did rather well considering it's a 360 game.

dswhore 4.27.2006 at 04:10:27 AM
I'm shocked that Mother 3 wasn't beaten by a Dragon Quest game (even though it's a spin off)

I hope it lingers too for obvious reasons.

Okami.....

Why does it have to be like that? Now you see why most every title up there is a sequel. The gaming biz will fail if nothing new is brought to the table. Support the new good games!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, and bring Mother 3 to the U.S. SOOOOOOOOOONNN!!!!!

I want Okami to do well. Capcom should be rewarded for trying good new things. They don't do that much anymore.

Brain Training for Adults hasn't been in the top 10 for 49 weeks, it's been on sale for 49 weeks. Not that it still hasn't been doing phenomenally... but I'm just saying.

Hear, hear, pixy! Excellent that Mother 3 debuted at #1. We want it here in the states, and we want it now! Of course, if not the fanslation should be appearing shortly. ;-)

I'm not really sure what DQ Yangus is like, but its sales seem infinitesimal compared to DQVIII's. Still, for a spinoff I guess it did well.

Very disappointing sales for Okami...I knew it was a pretty controversial title and not everyone would get it, but I expected at least 100,000. Oh well, I hope it's a good game.

Winning Eleven 10 is sure to snag some really high numbers. It's pretty much the equivalent to Madden over there.

It's always good to see software sales rise up over the previous week's. Nintendo DS and PlayStation 2 did well as usual, but it's nice to see a GameBoy Advance and PSP title in the mix. I'm positive that GBA sales will be up as well thanks to Mother 3.

Sony managed to push plenty of stuff up there this wee, they managed to keep things alittle interesting.

I wonder if Mother 3s sales will give us a jump in GBA sales or DS sales this week.

Has there been a game in the past to be in the top 10 for 49 weeks? I know it dropped for a little while, but hot damn.
