News - Yoshitaka Amano working on Final Fantasy XIII

Posted by Ash Paulsen at 07:01:23 AM EST on 4.28.2006.

Even though Final Fantasy XII hasn't even been released yet in North America or Europe, we're already starting to get our first details on the next installment in the venerable franchise, Final Fantasy XIII.

In a recent interview with Japan Vibes, a French magazine, character designer Yoshitaka Amano chatted about a few different projects he was working on. One of these projects surprisingly included a mention of Final Fantasy XIII.

Even though the game was unofficially announced to be in development quite awhile ago, this Amano blurb is one of the first real, official acknowledgements that have been made regarding the game's existence.

Amano did not discuss his exact role in the game's development, but considering his profession, one would assume it to be that of "character designer," although that of course is not confirmed at this point.

It's quite odd that the first fact we have about Final Fantasy XIII is that Amano is working on it in some capacity. However, it has been rumored that Square Enix plans to officially unveil the game at this year's E3, which is only two weeks away. If that ends up happening, you can be sure GAF will be there to bring you all the news.

Doesn't Amano do the preliminary art for FF anyway? I know for sure that he still does the logo backgrounds, and there-in is character design. I've seen his sketches for Cloud... so this story is plausible but not unexpected.

You're not alone MMX. I have no issue with Amano's work per se, I just prefer Nomura's... Way more.

You know, I'd really like it if Square got away from FF's "typical" anime look provided by Nomura. FF is in need of a make over of sorts, and I think it would be something special if Square used next gen hardware to come up with something that looked like a 3D version of Amano's work, instead of something that looks closer to Advent Children.

One comment about the over effiminate characters... I dunno. I often like my females effiminate.

Amano is probably just doing the logo here, though. That's my guess.

Without getting too in-depth, I'll just say that while I like Amano's work quite a bit, I do prefer Nomura. Nomura's probably my favorite contemporary artist ever. :D

I think that will ultimately depend on whether or not the Wii can be successful in the Japanese market, and at least moderately successful in the North American market. Until it proves its worth in this fashion, I can't see the Wii getting much more than Final Fantasy titles like Crystal Chronicles, which may or may not prove to be a bad thing in the upcoming sequel. I would rather see the console have titles which would best serve its functionality, but it'd be rather foolish to say that a main Final Fantasy installment on the Wii would do anything less than move a substantial amount of units and increase the system's credibility and viability.

I don't believe that Square is necessarily reticent to test the multiplatform waters and they have stated so before, but thus far the competition has hardly warranted it. Perhaps the Wii, and the X360 is if ever wakes up in Japan, could change this though.

I wonder if it'll have a port for the Wii. It's not like they're incapable of doing it considering how many times the FF series was ported to other systems.

Yeah, actually I did. But I'd still like to see that as well.

A graphic novel by Amano called "Hero" is being released in like a week. Unless you meant games...

Why has it been so long since I've seen anything new from Amano? It seems like ages. I'm glad that this news if finally being reported though, since I'd originally heard as much some time back, but figured it was an unsubstantiated rumor at best.

20 posts.

That's how long it took ppl to mention the Wii on a COMPLETELY non-Wii related news post.

Not bad guys.

hmm.. like every gamecube game had game or cube at the end. i know people are trying to be funny by pointing out ways Nintendo will exploit the word wii, but its just not gonna happen. the only time we'll see the word wii, is if nintendo put only on "Nintendo wii", f*** that sounds stupid.

You know, they don't have to add on Wii to everything. Look at Super Monkey Ball. Going OH MAN IT'LL BE FF WII is just stupid. It'll be Crystal Chronicles: something something. Or they'll name it with some other subtitle.

I could've sworn that they said that FFXII would be the last game in the series. Of course, I never beleived that, but does anyone else remember them saying that all the time?

who's the character designer on games like crystal chronicles / ff:ta (assuming they're the same)? i quite dig that person's style.

the only way FFXIII will be a shounen-ai story, is if the scenario writer is a young japanese woman with no real knowlege of homosexual relationships. after all, that's all that shounen-ai manga are.

I like Amano's style, his color images have a very dream like feeling. his ink/black and white images tend to be a bit more "masculine" than his normally feminine characters. either way, I doubt we'll see him as the main character designer, but it will be nice to have him back in a larger capacity than he has been.

I think I would trade the zippers, 20 extra straps/belts, and spiky hair characters of Nomura for the effeminate wispy characters of Amano any day.

"my japanese is elementary but isn't "shonen ai love story" redundant? should it be "shonen ai story"?"

I know. it just makes more sense in english to put "love" at the end of it.

I was thinking about it as I was writing it though.

Yeah, like sniffy said, I wouldn't count on Amano as character designer. As I mentioned in an earlier thread, he also worked on 7, 8, and 10, where Nomura did main character design. Word on the street is that Nomura and Kitase are in charge again for 13, so I'm presuming he'll do characters again. But who knows?

sirsniffy 4.28.2006 at 09:42:39 AM
No, but expect lots of feathers, ribbons, and grapes floating around the characters. Leather belt straps, unnecessary buckles and silver S&M chains may or may not appear in this installment of Final Fantasy.

For real though, I doubt Yoshtaka Amano is the character designer, just an artist to make things look classy in the instruction book and Logo.

"joesteele - 4.28.2006 at 08:50:12 AM
so this means that FFXIII will be a shounen-ai love story right?"

Probably. The first bits of information we got was that the game will focus around the number 13 and all it represents. So two girly boys falling in love in some fantasy world where it's forbidden. They're having all kinds of hardships and bad luck.

Yeah, because overtly effeminate anorexic characters are a LOT better than... overtly effeminate anorexic characters.

One load of crap for another.

I like his work. This is excellent news. I don't think he will be the character designer, but I always love his concept art work...it adds classiness to Final Fantasy that has been missing since the hack took over as character designer.
