News - New Metal Gear Solid for PSP in 2007

Posted by Josh Freund at 11:14:28 AM EST on 5.6.2006.

Boy, Kojima sure does like revealing news through his podcast. On the latest episode of HIDECHAN! Radio, Kojima dropped a bomb - a new Metal Gear Solid title for PSP will be coming in fall 2007, around the time of the Metal Gear series' 20th anniversary. This won't be another spinoff like the Metal Gear Acid games; it will be part of the main series canon.

Thanks to some members at the NeoGAF forums who have translated part of the podcast, we can bring you the first details on this title.

It will apparently take place in 1970, after the end of Metal Gear Solid 3. Big Boss will be the protagonist, and the story will deal with his founding of Foxhound. The graphical quality will, according to the podcast, be on par with the PS2 MGS titles. There will of course be less polygons in some models, but it will be done in such a way that it's not very noticeable to the player.

This will be an action title, but there will be some changes to the game's usual combat formula. The player will control troops. If troops die, they're gone for good; it seems death is an important part of this game. There will be multiple ways to win battles. At the start of each battle, you'll have the option of betting troops. If you decide to surrender your troops by using the "white flag" before the battle's over, you won't lose the troops you bet (it's unclear what the consequences will be, though). Also, this one's a little sketchy, but it seems the game will not feature Continues, so if you die, you're gone for good. This is an idea Kojima has mentioned wanting to try several times in the past, and it will likely be the topic of many arguments between MGS fans.

MGS for PSP will also feature multiplayer battles over Wi-Fi.

This is truly a surprising announcement. With Sony's pre-E3 conference just two days away, expect more details on this new MGS title and hopefully clarification on the unclear parts soon.

I like the idea of permanant death. It means that you'll probably think things over a bit more. Anyway, now I might have to actually get a PSP.

I always knew Sean Con... Big Boss would get his own game, and now he has two.

Because the old-school squiggily lined Konami logo of olde still rocks! Konami may have discarded it, but it lives on through GAF, and each of our hearts. Shh... do you hear that? *Konami sound* Ahhh, yes.

Why did GAF change the Konami logo with all the characters to the oldschool dual flag logo?
MGA1 was lousy, but 2 really was pretty damn brilliant for what it was. Granted, any game with the randomness of a card deck is going to have issues, but I feel that MGA2 is one of the best games on the PSP yet. Cant wait for this new one though!

So... the PSP's battery life is going to be what? One hour. Metal Gear Solid requires tons of disc access which equals dead batteries...

Um, no. MGA is horrible. This is nice. I like it when canon sequels come out for portables. Like Metroid II.

C'mon i love the PSP but putting Big Boss in a sequel to MGS3 on this platform is just wrong......

Permanent death and squad based gameplay. Hmm, I might have to sit this one out if it ends up resembling one of those Rainbow Six games."

Nothing wrong with Rainbow Six, but I doubt Kojima would make a Metal Gear where you actually plan your infiltration route.

The "reviews" might say otherwise, but every single person I know who has played Acid says they both suck ass.

dusteater - I have a job. I can make enough to buy a PSP in two days. I refuse to until it has enough on it to make me want to play it.

God damn it. Now I gotta buy a PSP. I was perfectly happy not playing those Ac!d games. Now he goes and makes a game that's part of the canon. Thanks, Kojima, you prick. I hate how much I love this series.

Come on... The PSP only cost $199.99. I could make more than that in a week. Stop complaining and get a job!"

Do we REALLY need to have this conversation again? Because I'll do it. And I'll tear you a new one.

No continues, if you die that's it... Does that mean no saving between stages as well? Or will it use a save system that destroys the saves when you load, like between floor saving in dungeon crawlers. Either way, I think I'd be majorly pissed if I died due to a stupid accident...

Even if this is part of the Metal Gear Solid canon, the troop thing sounds a little suspicious. Metal Gear Solid Tactics, anyone?
