News - Nintendo registers three new trademarks for Wii

Posted by Justin Fassino at 10:48:28 PM EST on 6.18.2006.

According to German gaming website Gamefront, Nintendo has registered a group of names in Japan that all pertain to the company's upcoming console, Wii.

They are: WiiPointer, WiiCulture, and !!M.

While there are no details on what the names mean, it's a safe bet WiiPointer probably has something to do with the remote control (or one of its functions) for the system.

WiiCulture suggests a possible name or service for Nintendo's online system, Connect 24.

Curiously of all is !!M, which is simply the word Wii turned upside down. Pronouncing it may be tricky (bringing back memories of the artist Prince's symbol-name), but it has been speculated that the name pertains to a rumored instant messaging service Nintendo might include with the Wii's online service.

Nothing is official yet, but GAF will have more as details become available.

"i mean in the UK, i know no-one who uses it, everyone uses MSN...."

This is because circles of friends generally use the same IM service. You heard Bob and Steve used MSN (or whatever), so that's the one you signed up for.

The fact that everyone you know uses MSN is personal experience, an anecdote. This does not reflect on your town, region, or country as a whole.

would AIM support be worth it thought...

i mean in the UK, i know no-one who uses it, everyone uses MSN....

it might be the other way around in the US, but you gotta remember that this is a worldwide machine!

"then why not Wii & AIM "to flip off Microsoft"?"

Because iChat's cross-network compatibility isn't officially licensed via contract with AOL? Yeah. Trillian and Miranda have cross-network compatibility too, but they don't have deals with AOL to do so. They write their own plugins, and are subject to being locked out of AIM if AOL decides to change something in their protocol.

sgtrama 6.20.2006 at 08:28:56 PM
Yea, iChat uses AIM, & if they have cross-network communication between AIM & GTalk "to flip off Microsoft", and cross-network communication for iChat and AIM assumably "to flip off Microsoft", then why not Wii & AIM "to flip off Microsoft"?

Regardless, I can still dream. I think it would be awesome.

Actually, some of you might not know, but AIM has been a part of iChat since Apple introduced it, and you can use an AIM handle or a .Mac account though it, so the idea isn't that outlandish.

Not that I know why this discussion even exists... would anyone actually sit on their Wii to browse the internet and IM people exclusively and not use their computer at all? I really doubt it... so being able to replace AIM with the Wii client shouldn't even be a consideration, imo.

"So since it HASN'T happened, then it's obviously NOT EVER gonna happen?"

Pretty much. If AOL isn't interested in allowing cross-network communication except between AIM and GTalk (and only then to flip off Microsoft), what do they care about the messenger system of a Nintendo console?

"Nintendo isn't making the browser for DS or Wii, why wouldn't they do the same for the IM client?"

This is still presuming !!M is a messenger service, and presuming there will be a downloadable version for Windows.

sgtrama 6.19.2006 at 11:15:59 PM
"Which isn't going to happen. AOL has only officially approved cross-network communication between AIM and GTalk, and that has yet to be implemented."

So since it HASN'T happened, then it's obviously NOT EVER gonna happen?

"I wonder why there's such anticipation for a Nintendo-branded IM client in the first place. A brand-new program from a company that doesn't produce PC software and cannot design coherent UI to save its life does not excite."

IF in the event that it DID have AIM ingretation, or at least support, who's to say that AOL wouldn't be the one's making it? Nintendo isn't making the browser for DS or Wii, why wouldn't they do the same for the IM client?

"There's anticipation for it because it would be nice. What's wrong about that?"

The presumption it would be nice. It would be terrible--a company with no history of writing PC software suddenly puts out an IM client intended for general use? If you think it would be a quality program, at least right away, you're nuts.

"But, I definitely would if !!M users could contact AIM users."

If you guys really want to get rid of AIM that badly... get Trillian, or wait a couple of more months for Miranda's AIM OSCAR plugin to be completed and shipped with the 0.5 release.

The US worked through the formative years of the internet through AOL. If you weren't on it (and for me it was the only internet option), then you knew someone who did. And when you finally got the internet, you downloaded AIM to talk to your friends who were already on AOL.

Instant messaging wasn't a world wide phenomenon until recently. America was way ahead of the pack on adaptation. MS won market share when they forced MSN Messenger on every Win XP machine.

And now you know.

visual77 6.19.2006 at 06:06:31 PM
The only way I'd get rid of AIM for !!M is if !!M can do everything AIM can(most importantly: contact AIM users), plus some new functions. If !!M can't connect up to AIM users, then I keep AIM since most of the people on my buddy list won't be getting a Wii, and thus won't likely be getting !!M(unlikely if it comes to PC as well, definite no if it's Wii only).

"and who uses MSN except camwhores and XBOX users anyway? :((("

Uh... everyone. MSN is the most popular IM client worldwide. AIM is slightly more popular in the US, but that's because AOL had a massive subscriber base that emigrated to broadband services and therefore adopted their stand-alone client. America excepted, MSN is the hands-down winner.

"I'd get rid of AIM in a heartbeat if Nintendo made an instant messenger that could communicate between the Wii console and a PC... zomg."

... Why? If all your contacts are on AIM, why would you switch to a messenger that presumably wouldn't be compatible with AIM?

And this is assuming this is a cross-system messenger. I find it hard to believe Nintendo would allow it to communicate with PC users.

"XBOX360 can't/won't do that, and who uses MSN except camwhores and XBOX users anyway? :((("

Ironically enough, Japanese (and Asian in general, including Indian and adjacent localities) people comprise the largest number of MSN users because MSN has way better multi-byte character input support than AIM or Yahoo Messenger.

I've seen a list of at least 50 URLs that Nintendo has redirect to nintendo.com. There's tons.

You know, after thinking about Nintendo and an instant messenger... I'd get rid of AIM in a heartbeat if Nintendo made an instant messenger that could communicate between the Wii console and a PC... zomg.

Imagine getting on your computer, getting on the internet, and signing on to !!M. Look, there is your buddy... right click and see what game he is playing. Send him a message that will get to him while he is playing single player of let's say... Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

"Hey, wanna play SSBB?"

You get on your console and you can talk to him from there or just go directly to Super Smash Bros. Brawl and connect and then fight.

omg. Amazing.

Just watch, Nintendo's marketing campaign is going to be Verne Troyer wearing a black tuxedo in a white room full of bubbles, and Verne Troyer will just say "Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!" and run around like a crazy person. I know I'd buy something supported by an ad campaign like that.

Hopefully Nintendo's thing with AOL for the "be the first to play the Wii" extends into their IM service too. If Wii can control AIM, then that'll be KEY. XBOX360 can't/won't do that, and who uses MSN except camwhores and XBOX users anyway? :(((

Neat. I think WiiOnline is better than WiiCulture, but oh well. !!M is neat, it'll probably just be pronounced "Eye-Emm" or something.
