Treyarch, the developers of such titles as
Spider-Man 2 and
Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, has turned its attention to the world of Ian Flemming's British spy extraordinaire, James Bond.
Upon securing the James Bond video game license from
EA in May, a job posting at
Activision's official website says the company is looking for a gameplay designer. It is extremely likely that the new Bond game from Treyarch will not coincide with the upcoming film this December; instead, Activision suggests that the title will be of the next-gen variety on the PS3 and Xbox 360.
Activision's James Bond license, which includes making games on not just the movies, lasts until 2014.

Well, I'd definitely like a explorable MI5 HQ, a bit like an expanded hub from Perfect Dark.

Funny how so much of the discussion is about Timesplitters and Free Radical. Then again, that's exactly what I was going to post about anyway.
Free Radical, the closest that exists to the "Goldeneye 64 team", gets criticized for not having a great story and characters to go along with their great gameplay. 007 worked so perfectly with the style of gaming they developed that it's really a shame they won't get another crack at the license, at least anytime soon.
In the meantime I'm really enjoying a bargain-bin copy of Future Perfect, but here's to the dream that someday we'll have our tasty Free Radical gameplay combined with a truly worthy scenario again.
Just thinking out loud, but Free Radical has a thing for tongue-in-cheek humour... Would an Austin Powers FPS work? More importantly, could I bring myself to shoot at the delicious Dr. Evil?

A GTA approach wouldn't really be consistant with the Bond property. Well...unless the sandbox play was just a dating subgame where you'd try to bed as many women as possible in between calls from M.

I bought TS2 based on reviews, and then bought "TS3", despite reviews saying it was basically more of the same.
With Treyarch's game history with Spiderman, do you think we'll get our first ever "007/GTA hybrid", with a full free world to explore, with main quest, side quests etc?

I bought the first because it was developed by Free Radical. I also read the reviews and thought I might like it. I didn't. When the sequel came out I didn't even consider getting it, until I read a ton of glowing reviews about it. So I got it. It was better than the first but still not my cup of tea. And yes, technically I still do own them although they have been lent out to different friends for about a year now.

"Is it really that hard to figure out?"
Yes, especially with the existence of internet reviews and video rental chains.

I never played much of the first TS as I didn't have a Playstation 2 when it was in it's prime, but I picked up TS2 and had hours of fun with it, there are many glaring similarities to goldeneye haha, gameplay being sort of one of them.
I've been wanting to get TS3 for a while but haven't because of the price. maybe I should still pick it up, I mean, I loved TS2..

Some people like to see for themselves if the sequel improves on the first game. Some people also don't get rid of games they buy, even if they hate them.
Is it really that hard to figure out?

"I have the first two Timesplitters games and I hate them thoroughly."
This makes no sense. If you hate them, why did you buy them--or even still own them?

Well thehawk, TS2 is definatly worth the swap from KB/Mouse to Console as far as FPS goes.
If treyarch can whip james bond into shape as they did with Spider-man 2, then I'll definatly be adding this one to my collection.

"There have been at least 2 Timesplitters games that have replicated Goldeneye's gameplay perfectly. Now, if you insist on it being coupled with the Bond license..."
Well, it's kind of aside from the point I was getting at. I mean, we've added all sorts of great things to console FPS games, but no matter how much better they get, they'll never quite replicate the thrill of the first time you pegged your buddy with the PP7. It's not even really the Bond license I'm thinking of. I don't like most of the Bond movies.
Still I am considering Timesplitters 2, because this isn't firs time I've heard somebody praise it. A console FPS has to be really good for me to give up the keyboard and mouse to play it.

Free Radical, who made the 3 Timesplitters games, were the people who made Goldeneye & Perfect Dark. If you were a fan of those, pick up Timesplitters. I can't personally vouch for TS: Future Perfect, but 2 is fantastic. Seriously check those out; they're the real deal.

I would have to agree that Timesplitters (the last 2) play very similar to Goldeneye/Perfect Dark. I am a HUGE fan of the Timesplitters games, and that's just one reason why. If you're really jonesing for a Goleneye like experience, just without the Bond, give them a try!

There have been at least 2 Timesplitters games that have replicated Goldeneye's gameplay perfectly. Now, if you insist on it being coupled with the Bond license, that's another thing, but it's not like you haven't been able to play the underlying game since Goldeneye/Perfect Dark.

I thought Everything or Nothing was EA's best Bond game also. Although I enjoyed it thouroughly, it wasn't as great as Goldeneye. The only game that has replicated a game like that, and surpassed it, in my opinion, was the original Perfect Dark. I really hope Treyach will do good with this, because Bond is a great liscense to have.

It feels like EA has been trying to recreate that Goldeneye goodness ever since it hit the N64. A generation later with much better technology, it doesn't seem like it's happened. I have a hunch we'll never get that "Goldeneye feeling" again, because it was the first time and it was special. You can't replicate that.
I am kind of curious about what a new company can do for Bond though. If they were to focus on creating a new way of enjoying the whole Bond espionage deal, then I think we'd have something to get excited about.

I don't know why EA went with a different production team for Goldeneye 2. Everything or Nothing was, in my opinion, the best Bond game.

And, I was hoping Free Radical would start doing something with the Bond license. Oh well. I'm sure Treyarch can do better than EA.
