A plethora of new details have surfaced for
Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles for the Wii.
As the title indicates, the game revolves around tying together the story of the Umbrella Corporation. Gameplay wise, it will NOT be light gun style, instead using a setup similar to
Resident Evil 4. The B trigger will be used to engage over-the-shoulder view, with the Wiimote to aim and A to fire. Other details are listed below.
-The game consists of 4 chapters:
RE1's mansion,
RE2's RPD,
RE3's city areas and
RE4's village and surrounding locations.
-Each chapter has 2 selectable characters.
RE1 includes Jill and Chris,
RE2 has Leon and Claire,
RE3 has Jill and Carlos, while
RE4 has Leon and Ada.
-There are several characters that can be unlocked by playing through the game, including Rebecca Chambers, Hunk, and Albert Wesker.
-The game features Quick Time Events ala
RE4, but rather than pushing buttons they require motioning with the Wiimote.
-All characters will have melee attacks, just like
RE4.
-To encourage replayablility, each character has strengths and weaknesses, with variations in health, speed, and other factors.
-New content will be added to the individual chapters, with a primary aim to include more of an Umbrella connection to the
RE4 story.
-Ammo conservation will play a part in the gameplay, harkening back to the pre-
RE4 games.
-Each character will have a unique set of weapons, and may hold a maximum of 2 weapons at any one time. Chris, for example, gets a pistol and shotgun whilst Jill gets a pistol and grenade launcher.
-Each stage will feature new weapons such as Richard's shotgun (
RE1), the Desert Eagle (
RE2), and the Chicago Typewriter and Krauser's anti-personnel robots (both
RE4).
-After each chapter your data can be saved, unlocking these new weapons for Arcade Mode.
-
Arcade Mode will be based on the Mercenaries minigame, where you pick a character and stage and blast your way through it.
-
Scenario mode will feature a large number of in-game cutscenes.
Additionally,
Capcom has stated that a full trailer will be present at the Tokyo Game Show. We'll bring you more details as they are available.

Back to the archaic Resi mechanics of ammo/gun conservation? I hated that in the old games...

My point is though - *why* would they release a heavily cut down version of a game on the Wii, when they could, and should release a game that's been designed from the ground up for the console, and uses the unique controller in different ways. I still don't think RE5 could be done on the Wii while retaining any sort of quality.

I understand your reasoning, ecureuil. I just think that when we see games like Far Cry: Vengeance coming to the Wii (sure, it's been dumbed down) then it shows that the very process of downgrading a more advanced game to Wii levels isn't out of the question. I realize we'll lose some stuff... Maybe we'll end up with dumber AI or less accurate physics.

NOt bad! Pretty kick ass if you ask me. Thanks for the info. GAF staff. One more reason to get your Wii on.

Indeed art style and how everything is presented is soon to become every graphic fans fave topic.
I believe Capcom are talented enough to pull a version of RE5 off on Wii, definitely so if they did so with the six year old PS2
Just another bit of info. You good people should check out Resident Evil Umbrella Archives book. Its damn good and a must for fans of the series. It has all the art from RE 0,1,2,3 and CV and lots of other stuff. Its out now in the U.S, go buy it and support Capcom.

Oh yeah, Yoshi's Island definitely. I just prefer SMW(as a game). :P

Really, Super Mario World? I always thought that the sprite art for that game seemed so... bland... just like the sprites for Link to the Past. Yoshi's Island however has an extremely beautiful art style. It's my favourite thing about the SNES game Tetris Attack. Man I want Yoshi's Island 2 to be good.

It's not so much the graphics, but the art style. A little love goes a long way. Super Mario World is one of the best looking games ever in my opinion. I'm thinking Wii will have a lot of unique games that won't require the most intense polygon-pushing power, but look and feel good great, and that's enough for me. Super Mario Galaxy is looking like one of these titles. :)

im just waiting for the moment when ALL Wii games will start looking like Twilight princess, and maybe even a bit better
that's enough for me, in terms of graphics

Doesn't quite work like that. 360 and PS3 are similar in terms of power, PS3 has the edge in both the CPU and GPU stakes, but it will probably be a few years before PS3 games distance themselves from 360 games. I imagine it will be much like how last-gen Xbox games were in comparison to PS2 games. (stuff like Half Life 2, and Far Cry, which simply couldn't be done on the PS2) This "Xbox 360 is more like Xbox 1.5" stuff is just crap made by Sony fanboys btw.
If you just take a quick comparison of some basic stats, you can see how the Wii shapes up.
Firstly, CPU speeds -
Wii - 729MHz Broadway CPU
Xbox 1 - 733MHz Intel Custom Pentium III
PS3 - 3.2GHz Cell, (8 in the console, of which there are 6 active)
GPU clock speeds -
Wii - 243MHz Hollywood GPU
Xbox 1 - 250MHz nVidia NVX2 GPU
PS3 - 550MHz nVidia RSX
RAM -
Wii - 88MB 1T-SRAM
Xbox 1 - 64 MB DDR SDRAM
PS3 - 512MB (XDR & GDDR3)
Memory bandwidth -
Wii - 4GB/s
Xbox 1 - 6.4GB/s
PS3 - 25.6GB/s (on XDR RAM)
These stats aren't conclusive as to how a console performs, and I know you can't just reel off numbers and say that this is better than that, however it's clear to see that the Wii is absolutely nowhere near as powerful as the PS3, or 360. It's not even close. If you have to put it simply, it's a little more powerful than the original Xbox, the extra RAM will allow the developers to push the machine a further, though. Wii games will look great, but don't expect them to look a whole lot better than what you're already seeing though. Don't think for a second that two years down the line, the Wii will have games on a technical par with the 360 and PS3, it's never going to happen.

geo 9.21.2006 at 04:59:21 PM
Just wanna point this out: The PS3 is what 7 or 8 times as powerful as the PS2, and the 360 is about another 2 times though a little more powerful than the orginal xbox correct? And the Wii is supposed to be nearly twice as powerful as the gamecube.
Ratio fun time!
Based on the assuption that the Gamecube was a bit over half the xbox (though somehow beats it in floating point arethmethic capabilities) and twice or more the power of the PS2:
Wii = VERY roughly 1/3~1/4 PS3 , 1/2~1/3 360
Now use that as you may but keep a few things in mind: RE4 ran on the ps2...doi you know how hard that system has been pushed!? The dreamcast is better than that thing and yet the PS2 has been out some nice graphics over the years and suprised everyone. And lets not forget that Nintendo has always (of course one can always complain about the N64) had an easy way to push through the the graphics. Develops can go to town but its just that like people have said that the PS3 and 360 are quite hard to develop on. Wii however is supposed to be easier. as far fetched as it might be wouldnt it be a shocker to see a Wii game look better than PS3 and 360 games?
Right now all we know are parts and right now that doesn't mean anything.

the ability to port or not to port RE5 deffinatly depends on how much the power of the 360 and PS3 effect the gameplay of the game itself and weather a reasonable version could be done on a lesser system
that's besides the point the Wii should get some good continuations of the series I think and hopefully this game is a good effort on Capcoms part
I would like to see more games use the RE4 engine on the Wii with the engine enhanced for the larger specs of the system

It's not just about simple graphics that can be dumbed down, it's about the size of the playing area, the lighting effects, the number of enemies and people on screen, the artificial intelligence of those enemies and so on. It's not just raw polygon pushing power, there's more to consider as to why this is unlikely to be achieved on a Wii port of the game.

ecureuil 9.21.2006 at 03:14:31 PM
Yeah yeah, I knew we all love the Wii and all that, but you have to be realistic about the specifications of the machine, they're just not that hot when put next to the 360. Don't you think that the game would be on the Wii, if it could be done? It IS a multiplatform series now, after all.
Let's just find the aims for this game, such as here -
http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=60331
"Speaking in the September issue, Takeuchi talks in depth about the visual aspects of the game. The main character, who's identity has yet to be officially confirmed (although it's clearly looking like one of the series mainstays, Chris Redfield) is said to be modelled in extreme detail, even down to the individual blade of hair for his stubble. Capcom plans to create a visual engine that can set values for various muscles in the character's faces, although Takeuchi laments he's unsure if this will make it in the final game.
What is certain, however, is that Resident Evil 5 will follow a closer gameplay model to RE4 rather than its previous iterations, which means more action based gaming and, according to Takeuchi, something resembling reactive physics that allow the realistic breaking and toppling of items within the game world. The producer hopes all this will run at 60 frames per second, twice the speed of RE4, even with additional effects to help create a greater visual sense of heat and cold."
If this is what they're shooting for, I can see why they're not going to put it on the Wii.

I LOOOOOOOOVE lightgun games. That being said, I'm still glad this isn't one, just because like dj tempora said, it's not right for RE.
And on the topic of whether or not the Wii can handle RE5, look at it this way: We're at the point where we can make any kind of game we want. Your imagination's the limit. The only variable factor now is how good the graphics are. You can always reduce polygons, textures, and physics calculations. If it looks like RE4 then it STILL looks good. RE5 can definitely be put on Wii, just not at its planned graphic level.
Ironically, things are quite the opposite. The REAL question is can games be ported FROM the Wii. That controller means that some types of games could not exist on any other console.

jekku 9.21.2006 at 02:51:35 PM
Wii CAN handle RE5. Will it look nearly as good as the PS3/360 version? No. Of course they can't directly port the game without dumbing down the graphics.
However, Resident Evil 4 on GameCube was beautiful. If they made RE5 look like RE4, I would be more than happy.

Wii cannot handle RE5. End of story. People shouldn't get their hopes up for ports of 360/PS3 games on the Wii, Nintendo don't want it, and it's going to be a technical nightmare for developers to port them, too. We're talking Ridge Racer PSP to Ridge Racer DS-like conversions, and I'm sure you remember how crap the latter was compared to the former. DS got amazing when developers started making games for the DS, using it's functions. I hope the Wii will be the same.

I don't think it's safe to say anything, ecureuil. We may or may not see RE5 on Wii. It's too early to tell anyway. They really haven't said anything or shown off anything since the teaser trailer was revealed way back when. RE5, as of now, is not exclusive to any console(s). And, if they do make it exclusive... well... we saw what happened to RE4 on GameCube. :P

ecureuil 9.21.2006 at 01:26:10 PM
I think it's safe to say we'll never see it on the Wii. There is a world of difference between Wii and 360, much more than GC -> PS2. They almost pulled the plug on the PS2 version of RE4, because they had trouble getting it working at a playable rate without crippling the graphics. We know the Wii has a little more grunt than then GC, but it's clear that in terms of graphics it's closer to "current gen" than "next gen", as much as I hate those terms.

dj tempora 9.21.2006 at 01:15:54 PM
Never say never. If the Wii explodes with popularity, you better believe it'll be there. We've seen dumbed-down ports from Capcom before, graphically speaking.
*cough* RE4 to PS2 *cough*
Take out the HD from the 360 version, lose some textures and polygonal detail, and it's EASILY within the realm of possibility.

ecureuil 9.21.2006 at 12:32:51 PM
faye.min - No, RE5 won't be on the Wii. The Wii is not powerful enough to handle it. There's quite a large difference in power between the Wii and the 360 and PS3. It doesn't matter though, this game will have it's own plus points involving the controller.
bidingtime - Umbrella is part of RE4 as much as any of the other games, your casual player would miss it though, they didn't make it obvious. RE4 plot spoilers ahead -
Wesker and Krauser are trying to reform Umbrella, Ada goes under the guise of working for Wesker in order to bring him back the Plaga sample so he can have a complete caché of virii for the reformed Umbrella Corporation. Krauser was there because Wesker (correctly) didn't trust Ada and thought she was suspicious. Wesker and Umbrella now have the T-Virus, G-Virus, T-Veronica Virus and Plaga sample. Umbrella are as much a part of RE4 as any other RE game, they kept it quiet though.

This game sounds awesome! I was also hoping for a graphically enhanced and RE4's over the shoulder view remake of RE2, but oh well. Here's to hoping that Campcom will also remake RE2, and based on the possible success of RE:UC, maybe release RE5 on the Wii as well?

RE4's been out for almost two years now, I hope they're not going to retcon aspects of it already.
I would have preferred an RE2 remake to this, though, simply because RE2 is the best game in the series.

The fact that we're gonna get to play through RE 1, 2 and 3 with RE4's revamped over the shoulder wide screen view is what's got me excited most. If they'd left that putrid and clunky tank style in there I think I'd have to go throw up. The reworked story line will help keep it fresh too. I hope this one turns out as good as Resident Evil 4 did. =)

Apologies to RE fans, but I wish Capcom didn't try to tie Umbrella more into the RE4 plot. I wouldn't mind a game that wraps up the whole Umbrella story, but I liked how RE4 was starting with a fairly fresh story - I'm not fan of the earlier games.
That said, I might want to play them in this form.

I think that with this announcement, there's been a collective sigh of relief. as many others were, I too feared a Gun Surviver styled game. I'm happy to hear the ammo conservation style is back, as even the Hard mode was simplified by purchasing Rocket Launchers to defeat the bosses, leaving you plenty of ammo for standard enemies. I would also have liked to see the Handcannon instead of the Chicago Typewriter, unless they are doing something to balance it from being so absurdly powerful, but little gripes overall. I cannot wait for the release of this now!

onizuka - Chicago Typewriter was an unlockable weapen, it was basically just a tommy gun. The PS2 version was modified from the GC version to have the more familiar drum magazine that people associate with the weapon. Oh, and it was supidly powerful, a lot of fans didn't like it because it was TOO powerful, it mowed everything down, including bosses in a matter of seconds.
I personally wish they'd put the Handcannon in. That's my personal favourite weapon, it was so satisfying to use! This games sounds great though, I hope they get it right. Since they're visiting RE2's RPD and 3's city, we'll be able to see familar locations with much better graphics. That's a pretty exciting prospect.

Well I'll be buying it. Call it what you will, I have faith it will be good. I don't want RE series to turn into a glorified dedicated light gun game, there's Time Crisis and HotD for that kind of thing.
Besides the Gun Survivor games were a bit cheesy.
What the hell is the Chicago Typewriter, is this a weapon I missed?
All looking good Capcom, thanks.

Garsh: No no, I'm definitely looking forward to a light gun style Wii game. It's not the genre itself I don't like, I just don't want it for RE. Give me House of the Dead or similar and I'll be a happy man.
Shippoyasha: just judging from the description of the game so far, calling this a "remake and repackage" seems completely unfair. All of the graphics, gameplay, game modes, control, and story content are brand new.
