Namco and
Nintendo co-developed the first arcade entry into the popular
Mario Kart series. Though it featured the usual Nintendo characters and items (as well as some Pac-Man characters and new items), it didn't exactly capture the
Mario Kart feel many people know and love.
Regardless, it seems Namco's at it again with a sequel, appropriately titled
Mario Kart Arcade GP 2. As with the first, there will be cameras mounted on each unit. Players will be able to have their faces inserted into the game, and they'll then be displayed above their karts for all to see.
In addition to the returning
GP characters, Waluigi and Tamagotchi will be appearing in
GP 2, as seen in the scan below.
There's no word yet on when the second
Arcade GP will be released (or whether it will be released outside of Japan), but we'll keep you posted. For reference, the first one was released here by Namco last October.

Assuming "Mario Kart Wii" is nigh on guaranteed, Nintendo should allow us to put our own photos in the game. Like the emblems on Mario Kart DS.
Maybe even let us choose a Mii as one of the characters.

wtf! Tamagotchi!?!? Out of every namco character available they decide it's a good idea to use Tamagotchi!... I dont even have words to describe how I feel about that.

the same crap happened with f-zero.
winning is just a side effect. you have to pay for every race.

If they do make the coin system acceptable and bring them out of Japan the Student Union better get at least four of those cabinets.

You put in 75 cents for one race, won it, and then had to pay more to continue? What the heck?

There's actually a Mario Kart GP in a UA movie theater in the city where I live in. That's right, Namco handed the machine out to a revenue-share, and didn't keep it in the arcade.
The big thing that disappointed me about the game was that it's a ripoff. I paid $0.75 and won my first race. I expected to continue on to the next track, having skillfully defeated my opponents, only to find out I had to shell out more money. Wha? What happened to games like Cruisin' USA where getting first place meant you could continue on with the game?

Traditional arcades (just games in a dark poorly lit room with a small ticket prize counter and one attendant) are all but dead. Only a few remain in malls and in college rec centers.
Large entertainment centers like Dave and Busters or Gameworks are surviving. There's various independent large arcade style places found around the country as well, but they also offer a lot of prize games, food and other attractions in addition to just games.

Oh come on, Nintendo/Namco. At least bring it to the GameCube or the Wii in the US.

The arcades in the US are not DEAD. They are dying. And that's only if the arcade doesn't fill itself with Initial D, Tekken and DDR. A lot of Namco arcades are doing just fine.
And yeah, Gameworks tends to have Mario Kart GP and F-Zero cabinets. Namco arcades tend to sometimes have Mario Kart GP (they're usually on a circuit), and then the rest is Initial D, Wangan, and then the random other racers.

I found the original at a Sega Gameworks near Chicago. Gameworks may be your best bet in finding the sequel, as it still uses the Triforce board that was joint-developed between Namco/Nintendo/Sega.

You mean in the five arcades that are left in the US?

Hopefully GP2 will be easier to find in arcades than the original was.
