News - Best Buy says "no" to pre-release campers

Posted by Ash Paulsen at 06:27:04 PM EST on 11.13.2006.

A few days ago, a trip to the Burbank, CA. of media chain Best Buy would reveal up to eleven people already camped out patiently outside of the store, hopefully ensuring that they would be getting a PlayStation 3 come the console's November 17th launch day. Lawn chairs out and tents pitched, these gamers were prepared to wait as many as twelve days to ensure they got their hands on a PS3 at the system's launch.

Unfortunately, their plans were eventually foiled less than halfway into the stakeout - and not by sheer boredom, lack of food, or inability to deal with the cold nights (and hot days) as one might expect.

Instead, a trip to that Best Buy last weekend revealed that the company itself had actually posted a sign outside the front of the store kindly but staunchly forbidding any sort of line-forming prior the days of what one would assume to be the PS3 and Wii launches.

Neither the PS3 or the Wii were mentioned by name on the sign, which attributed all pre-launch fervor to so-called "gaming releases."

Specifically, the sign stated that no line-forming would be allowed until the day of release, which likely means that the very soonest a PS3-hopeful can get in line is midnight on the 17th.

So far, this rule only seems to apply to Best Buy; there has been no word of anything similar happening at other multi-purpose retailers, such as Target.

Right now it's not currently known if this rule applies only to this and other select Best Buys, or if it's a national, chain-wide decision. We will update this news post when that information can be ascertained.

ununblendave: Feel bad for them for being stupid enough to camp in front of a store for a console, not because it's going to snow. They're asking for that. Currently the campers in Florida are out in the middle of a lightning storm. Idiots.

There's a line of people in tents outside my local Best Buy as well... I feel bad for them, it may snow tonight. :/
LOL Stigglesworth! Luckily, these gamers just want a PS3 or Wii; they're not lording over the quad damage or anything. :)

It's not a chain-wide decision, apparently. There were serval people camping out at my local Best Buy.

Gamers should be used to being told "no camping"..

Waiting in lines for systems you want is fine by me. But, what games are you guys willing to do this for? The PS3 launch library doesn't seem to be worth all of that, in my opinion.

Resistance looks like it could be a fun game, but even trying to view it with a non-biased opinion I don't see what would make it fuel a desire to sit out in front of Best Buy for 9 days straight.

I'm not Sony bashing either; just so we're clear!

Why would your friend buy an extra one for you to sell instead of selling it himself? Is he retarded?

I'm leaving in 30 minutes to goto walmart and sit inside until 12:01 on the 17th.
I feel alittle crazy doing it, but I know a walmart that already has people at it and had them there since 10 last night.
So, my friend and I are going to go camp, and he's going to buy an extra one for me so I can have two, hopefully I can sell the second one for a decent amount and get this 56" DLP TV, nintendo wii will look damn cool on it.
I hope I can get 1900 out of one, god willing.

The store's logic behind this is to display a pleasant looking store without "gaijins" hanging around doing who knows what. It's all about the store image. But what Best Buy doesn't understand is that this is actually very good for business because A: all these people lined up have chosen Best Buy as their retailer of choice for an important (and not to mention very pricey) video game/entertainment purchase. Deterring these mongrels waiting in line might cause them to go shop someplace else. B: It doesn't turn people away like the retail giant thinks, in this day and age nobody really cares about a cue of cold dorks lining up outside the building. Most of the time they aren't in anybody's way. Do they really think it'll turn into a riot? Then again, considering the debauchery of the PS2 launch among Sony fans... C. It adds consumer interest to those coming into the store. Everyone else on regular shopping trips will wonder what the line is all about. And let's not deny it... much of the whole idea behind the electronics business is to covet thy neighbors goods.

My brother is currently camping out at a Best Buy right now. Well, camping out isn't the right word...sittting out, I guess. For some reason, they're not allowing people to utilize tents until Thursday. They're only allowed to have chairs and things out now.

azu: What I've read is the complete opposite. The graphics in Resistance are better than in Gears of War, but the design and play of Gears of War is on another level. Resistance is being called Timesplitters with next gen graphics.

azu 11.14.2006 at 07:00:32 PM
"Yeah, but you have to admit it's kinda overshadowed by Gears of War. "

Only in the graphics department. You could be pretty sure that they'd be held equals if only Resistance had as great character models as Gears of War and a little better lighting effects.

Besides, Gears of War and Resistance are different type of games. One has a more "quantity over quality" kind of take (Resistance), though it doesn't mean the game looks bad, and the other a more "quality over quantity" kind of approach. GeOW has only few characters on screen at one time, whereas there are dozens of them in Resistance, and there's a lot more happening on screen at any given time (not including those little pauses between action segments) than in GeOW.

"It's not like it's going to have any good launch games."

Pffft. Resistance is one. A 9.5 from Game Informer, 9.5 from GameZone, 9.1 from IGN, 91/100 from GameBrink, 9/10 from OPM etc. etc. I would call that a good launch game (and all the reviews I've read so far are saying it's one). You can't speak for everyone, even if you aren't too big of a fan of first person shooters and prefer adventure games over them. It still doesn't remove the fact that Resistance is once again a great game from Insomniac. Is PS3 worth getting for Resistance? Depends on your preferences. For those who think Halo is the greatest thing ever, it definitely is one. If you think the last good FPS was Doom 2, then maybe it's not.

And of course PS3 has those multiplatforms that'll be good (Oblivion, Fight Night Round 3.5 etc., although those are launch "window" games). So saying PS3 has no good launch games is pretty much BS. Even if those games are not the kinds of games you'd like to play, it doesn't mean they are bad as games.

Where it becomes scalping is when you buy the system for the sole purpose of reselling it immediately. If you buy the system, play it for a bit and then resell it because you don't like it but want your money back, then that's fine.
+0 karma
dreminemike 11.14.2006 at 06:26:20 PM
It isn't scalping, though. I'm not selling it for a higher price. I allow others to bid on my item. If such price/bid is higher than the MSRP, then that's what you're willing to pay for it. If you agree that selling the PS3 on eBay is considered "scalping," you are basically agreeing that everything on eBay is scalping. I purchase a product, I sell it for a profit. It's called doing business; consumerism. Nowhere in there do I see any form of scalping. If people are willing to bid a set amount of money for the product, that's called an 'auction.' If you consider reselling a PS3 as scalping, then every seller on eBay is a scalper.

Yeah, but you have to admit it's kinda overshadowed by Gears of War. All the reviews are pretty much saying if you have to play one, go with Gears of War. It's also a much cheaper and feasible to buy a 360 w/ Gears of War right now...

dreminemike: The problem with people camping to buy systems to resell, besides it being thoroughly retarded, is the fact it's technically scalping. With tickets to events, this is illegal. The government hasn't intervened with this form of price gouging yet. Hopefully they will. There's a difference between capitalism and scalping...

Hey, if this results in riots then I guess we've got a problem (and it's more than just people camping for game systems). If not, then congratulations to Best Buy for getting rid of virtual transients living on their front doorstep and giving people who actually tend to real-life responsibilities a chance to get a machine.

Everyone just wants a PS3 right now for the bragging rights. It's not like it's going to have any good launch games. I see no reason to buy something that expensive until Sony gets the bugs worked out.

Same goes for the Wii, though it actually offers more to the consumer at launch-- vastly different gameplay, games like Twilight Princess, and the virtual console. However, Nintendo can supply more of them, which is better for everyone in the end.

I don't know why people care so much when it comes to why people are camping out. If people are willing to sacrifice their time for the console, then let them do it. It only hurts those that aren't willing to go to such lengths for such console. Think about it though; if you end up selling the console on eBay, you end up making a lot of money off the console. I bet that half of the people in line are going to sell their console just to reap some monetary benefit out of the PS3 and their arduous wait in line.

If they're willing to wait days/weeks, more power to them.

This BestBuy thing is only going to cause chaos/pandemonium on the day the system is released. I've waited a day in line for the PS2 when it launched, and even there people were fighting because of the slight lack of systems the stores had (I believe our store had about 120 consoles, compared to the paltry 12 or so that same local BestBuy of mine is guaranteeing). Imagine the severity of the situation now that so little systems are going to be shipped and so many people want it.

It really doesn't hurt BestBuy to allow people to pacifically/peacefully camp outside of the store (as long as their camping doesn't hurt the customers who are going in and out of the store). Nor should it really trouble those who don't agree and dislike the folks who do this. It boils down to the fact that they CAN do it. If you can and are willing to sacrifice your time in that fashion, like I previously stated, more power to you.

Things ARE fair for all customers, bidingtime. Everyone has the option of camping out days/weeks prior to launch. If you can't, it means you have other obligations at hand than wanting to buy a gaming console.

proppat: "the show up at this time, get your lottery ticket, good luck" scheme might work for things that are of abundance (like movie tickets), but for something so scarce like the PS3, it's only going to create a huge amount of foreseen, unnecessary problems.

-Mike.

P.S. There's always Target/Circuit City/Wal-Mart.

This is good for two reasons:

1. it's a terrible idea to camp out for days just to get a game system.
2. this makes things fair for all customers instead of just the ones who can find a way to camp outside a store for 10 days.

About flippin' time. All stores should get to the point where they say "show up at this time, get your lottery ticket, good luck." People are ruining their lives over a stupid console. Not only that, doing this would probably encourage companies to not launch consoles in such rediculous numbers. It cuts through a lot of the hype. "OMG, these people are camping out for 7 days for a PS3...this is going to be amazing!"

I happen to work at best buy! Our store and most others(unless prohibited by property owner of say a mall or shopping center) are allowing lines at 10pm the night before both launches. Nov 17th we open at 8am. Some stores will have as much as 120 consoles! Nov 19th we open at 9am and I will sadly have to wait in line with all the savages to get my paws on Zelda.

I hope I don't get fired for this!!!!

I wonder if this is just a local store policy.

I talked to managers at BestBuy and Target today and they both had no problem with lines forming as long as it did not prohibit customer's from doing business (for either the PS3 or the Wii). Both managers mentioned something about tickets being handed out approx. 1 hour before sale/opening. Walmart's policy was for customer's to line up at layaway.

And speaking of BestBuy's opening for the consoles... I happed to be able to take a glance at the newsletter being passed around to employees:

All stores (unless it is a midnight launch for the PS3) will open one hour earlier than normal, 7am on Friday for the PS3 and 9am Monday for the Wii. You should check/confirm with your local BestBuy for normal operating hours.

Wii interactives will replace current DS interactives.

Out of curiosity, how do the people lining up from midnight to 8 AM go to the bathroom? Considering how crazy some people get about these systems, I can't imagine people would allow you to re-enter the line after you left to find a bathroom.

I think the best solution is to allow all those who come before 1am to enter into a fight to the death. The last X standing get to by a PS3. X being the number of consoles that store has, of course.

All problems can be solved through violence, as any good gamer can understand.

Not only does it seem like a bad idea, but what are they gonna do? Kick the people off the property? Ok, do that BestBuy. Good luck. For every person you kick off, 3 more are gonna fall in behind em, especially when it gets closer to launch. There is no way to stop the line. The lines will now form whenever BestBuy employees get tired of shooing people away. And, people will be pissed that they are shooed away, blame BestBuy for their lack of a system on launch, etc, much like valshier said.

I agree with valshier. I mean c'mon, not everyone's watch is set exactly the same. Midnight will come a minute or two sooner on some people's watches and will inevitably lead to fights breaking out. Best Buy is making matters worse by adopting this stance.

That is true dedication to the cause, but I wonder how these people managed to snag 12 free days. The pictures showed them all as adults, so did they just save up all their vacation time for this? Maybe they run their own business and as such make their own hours? Maybe this Best Buy happens to have a wifi hotspot and they brought along laptops and worked from there?

These are questions known to none but God. And Kutaragi.
