News - Sony VP comments on PS3's backwards compatibility; says Wii has none
Posted by
Josh Freund

Game|Life's Chris Kohler recently had a chance to talk to
Sony executive vice president and co-chief operating officer Jack Tretton. One of the main topics discussed was the PS3's backwards compatibility, and specficially, the minor problems that have been reported to occur with about 200 PS1/PS2 games. Here's what Tretton thinks about the matter:
"I would like my car to fly and make me breakfast, but that's an unrealistic expectation. We've reported problems on only 200 of the 8000 PlayStation 1 and 2 games. I would challenge the average consumer to say that there are significant problems with any of the games in their library."
He goes on to compare this with the BC offered by
Nintendo and
Microsoft:
"If you look at our competitors, one machine has zero backwards compatibility and one only has it with a third of their games."
Yeah...Mr. Tretton should probably double-check his facts before doing interviews in the future.
Tretton also briefly mentioned the issue of PS3 launch numbers. It seems the launch number "changes on a daily basis," and he can't give a definitive answer. Sony still expects 1 million units shipped by the end of 2006, and 6 million worldwide by the end of the fiscal year.

What an obnoxious little child.
He should just apologise and tell us they'll do the best they can instead of insults his customers, making excuses, and passing the blame onto others.
Wtf did that flying car comment have to do with anything, except for exposing himself as a retard and pissing me off?

I guess at the very least we can say Yamauchi saved the console business, even if he didn't invent it.
But he did say some pretty ridiculous things.

nekofrog, don't misunderstand me, I don't dispute that PS3 has great graphics and capabilities, but I have not seen anything so far that looks different from what can be done on a PS2. Just the stuff that Konami, Square-Enix, Capcom, and Level 5 does on a PS2 alone looks as good as stuff I have seen on these so called 'next-gen' systems. Now between the PSX and PS2, you could see a marked improvement. But now those changes aren't really visible at first glance.
I guess you see the difference in the gameplay and framerates huh?
And I am a Playstation guy. I just recently started supporting Nintendo. If they come at me with the same old critter games, no RPGS, and obscure Disney movie titles(a-la Gamecube)... then it will be the Dreamcast, N64, Gamecube all over again. Yeah, I know the Dreamcast is made by SEGA, but the Gamecube became the Dreamcast(for the reasons I mentioned above).

So far, there is nothing that I have seen on the PS3 that I have not seen on a PS2. Silent Hill 3 has better graphics than a lot of the screens of so called 'next-gen' PS3 games I have seen.
Don't even try it Sony! If people want Blue Ray disc players to play movies, they will buy them! Gamers want to play games, and get on the internet to game.

They have delivered. I'm so tired of this situation being misreported and misinterpreted. The 200 games in question aren't games that won't work at all, they're games with glitches but still work. Example glitch: "opening cutscene audio does not play on an HDMI connection." The rest of the game is fine, but that 0.5% of gameplay isn't perfect--AT LAUNCH--and people are up in arms?
This truly is a meme we're dealing with.

I am overly tired of hearing "It'll be fixed in the next firmware!" or "Wait for the download!!". Sigh. Sony's ALREADY PATCHED the Ps3 in Japan with new firmware. A day or so after launch this is unacceptable. Modern-day broadband applications lead to developer laziness and exploitation of consumers. I've been dreading this sort of technology coming to home consoles for over half a decade now. I used to be an avid PC gamer and there's a reason I'm not anymore.

joestele: nothing beats yamauchi's craziness and total disinformation about the consumer needs. I remember quite well he called RPG fans nerds/geeks who sit in a dark room and play games, when asked about why the n64 lacked epic rpgs. BUT, the idiotic, and ignorant statements of Sony's executives lately are almost up to par there. It's true that the Wii is not backwards compatible with anythign nintendo before the gc(and people, backwards compatibility isn't emulated games that you have to PAY for AGAIN, it bein able to play what you already have on your new system) but as far as Nintendo has stated, the Wii is 100% compatible with gc games, and that's quite something, not Zero as this ignorant idiot states.

Remember that Sony wants you to download your PS1, PS2 games to your PS3 in the future. So, virtual downloading *counts* as backwards compatability to Sony.
But only when they say.
Just like Connectivity is only "good" when it's PSP to PS3 and not when we were using it on the GBA to GC or the DS to Wii.
+2 karma
ecureuil 11.17.2006 at 10:15:53 AM
The VC doesn't really count as being backwards compatible, though. The Wii would have to actually play S/NES cartridges for the ultimate backwards compatibility.
But being able to download them is perhaps even better, because we should be able to get games that are really hard to acquire now. Can't see myself downloading games on the 360 and PS3, but I've already got planned what I'll download on the Wii.
Sony will have pretty much the same infrastructure for PS3 though, with PS1 titles available to download and play on PS3 and PSP. Even so, this guy is way off the mark. It seems to me like a backlash against all the people who are complaining about those old games that don't work 100% perfectly on the PS3, and I can kinda understand his frustration. Sony have taken a lot of hits recently, mostly deserved, but they've actually done a fairly decent job with the backwards compatibility here, and they're still taking heat from it.
"If you can't do the freaking backwards compatibilty 100% why the hell bother at all? "
What a load of trash. So a very tiny percentage of games don't have correctly working audio, even though the gameplay itself is fine, and you think they should scrap the whole thing? Have you any idea how stupid you sound? All the problems can be fixed via firmware updates, so what's the big deal?
So what do you want, more delays while they fix it? If they'd delayed it while they fixed this, you would have been the first person to come here and rant about how Sony deserve to fail because of the delays. They just can't win.

Yamauchi never said that "tiny balls" thing, but he has made other absurd comments before. For example:
"I have been saying this for some time, but customers are not interested in grand games with higher-quality graphics and sound and epic stories. Only people who do not know the videogame business would advocate the release of next-generation machines when people are not interested in cutting-edge technologies."

Obviously this guy's an ill-informed idiot, no question there. But I thought that the whole point of the PS3 was that it would do everything? From CDs to DVDs, MP3s and Blue-ray to PS1, PS2 and PS3 games... that was what they promised. Why is it unrealistic for gamers to expect everything to work on day one? Oh yeah, I forgot... it's unrealistic because Sony never delivers everything they promised for their consoles. Lest these executives forget that Sony plans to have PS1 games downloadable as well.
My understanding of the Wii Virtual Console is that the system is able to perfectly emulate the console's performance of their games. So technically it may not have the hardware built into the system, but it can play all the games. It may not be true backward compadability, but it's the next best thing, (if not better). And since the hardware is very similar to Gamecube's, there's no reason why it shouldn't be 100% backwards compadible with GC.

Well, I have to say this is another Sony like Laurel and Hardy act which is funny but also insulting. If you can't do the freaking backwards compatibilty 100% why the hell bother at all? People want to get rid of their previous PS systems but can't because of Sony messups.
The competition has nothing to do with them. That's like blaming your dog when you homework isn't done, it doesn't cut the mustard at all. Seems Sony are sealing their own doom, by buying the nails for their own coffin too, how stupid.
I agree that MS should look still commit themselves to making their full Xbox back catalogue work, whether through emulation (they could learn a lot from modders here, if they'd stopped chastising them and worked with them) or updates. With every 360 update some of the Xbox games should be covered, period. No excuses. I'm still waiting to play my Panzer Dragoon Orta, MS, get it together.
This is one of the problems with these PC like updates of consoles, is that it makes developers/publishers lazy with an 'we can fix that later attitude' which is very bad. Would Nasa or Ford do this (though I know that's different, but the same rule applies)?
Perhaps its MS and Sony switchin their GPUs is what has caused these BC problems, if so I'm just glad Nintendo stuck with ATi again. Games not running on your console when they should be, isn't acceptable and its one of the first things you should have on your mind, and specifically test when creating a new console, that you say will be BC. Even if you have to get each of those 8000 games tested and working, either way it should be done. I'll be watching for updates like a hawk to see if Sony (and MS too) let us down or not.
Get a grip Sony and MS, this ain't PCs you are dealing with but they are close, which to such advantage is why these problems should be ironed out swiftly, especially if online too.. That car/breakfast crap is ridiculou and once again Sony, you've disrespected your customers.
Go Nintendo, I'm sorry guys but I'd choose all my GC games working on Wii (those should include imports too, unlike Sony) over fancy HD and Blu Ray options any day of the week.
We demand a finger, yakuza style, Sony.

The Wii is backwards compatible by one generation, presumably 100% (GCN discs). The PS3 is presumably backwards compatible by two generations albeit not 100% (PS1 and PS2 discs) and 360 is backwards compatible by one generation, also not 100% (Xbox discs).

Tretton, if your car dealer promised you a flying, breakfast-making car IN WRITING, it better DO JUST THAT. Your PS3 buyers aren't asking for something unrealistic for the PS3. It's one of your bullet-points, jackass.

The VC games you play (so far as we know) are the same code as was encoded on the ROMs, but emulated from a different storage medium. Wouldn't ports be re-engineered code for the purpose of playing on different hardware? Nintendo acts like they don't want to mess with the old code.
That's beside the point though. The real issue here is the guy is an idiot. He even gets a bit snide when he brings up his car. Just like that flyer that said Wii's internet would be "free for the first six months", Sony has resorted to simply lying about their competition.

Well, cartridges on systems and games no longer in sale make it difficult to make them backwards compatible. So with some truth he is right. However, buying the old Nintendo games, Genesis games, Turbo-16, etc. for a very cheap price, really makes up for the supposed loss of backwards compatibility. I don't think Sony can say that the quality of their library is better than the one Nintendo, Genesis, and Turbo-16 put together, is better. For the most part, I think the percentage of winning titles over crap games is greater on the NES, SNES, T16. Than PS1 and PS2 have ended up with. I won't deny there have been really great games on the Playstation systems though. The fact that if you still have them in your library, you can just pop them into your PS3 and play them is a nice plus over simply purchasing games you've already had on the SNES, just to play them all on one system (its kinda worth it though, as you can pick games never had, but always wanted, too.)

Gamecube games are 100% backwards compatibility (as already mentioned). That alone is something big. Meanwhile even though one cannot shove in a cartridge and such to play the virtual console games, they are still supposedly 100% authentic to the originals. The whole BC comment with regards to the virtual console is a 'legal' technicality. Pure rubbish.
