News - Sony confirms 2nd PS3 shipment coming next week

Posted by Josh Freund at 07:36:51 PM EST on 11.18.2006.

Speaking to CBC News, Sony Computer Entertainment of Canada's marketing and public relations manager Matt Levitan announced that North American gamers who missed out on the launch will have another chance to grab a PS3 next week.

"We are getting a second shipment next week, probably around the middle of next week. We'll know by Monday or Tuesday when they will be available.

"We are flying in shipments from Japan and China, and will probably ship them directly to retail" [instead of to Sony's warehouses], he said.

Levitas expects 4 or 5 additional shipments by the end of 2006, with each shipment containing a quarter of the units that were available at launch. He unfortunately didn't state what that number was. If Sony's original 400K launch number is to be believed, that means another 400-500K in the next six weeks.

400K were said by Sony to be released.

only 125K-175K were actually shipped to the US.

some estimated that 2Million would get to NA before the end of the year, but obviously that won't happen. i heard nothing of this supposed second shipment until just now (and it's too late). but i hope there are more i can get to.

Scarecrow: Dude, wth? Your comment makes no sense and is kind of insulting. On top of that, for not having a lot of time to discuss games, you seem to sure be here a lot.

Terp: I think you're right. If I remember correctly it was about 350k between the 2 SKUs.

So does anyone know the total number of PS3's between the 2 SKUs here in the US that were available for launch. I know the stores around me only got 1-6 systems a piece. The gamecrazy I work at only got 1, and it was a 20gb. Lotta angry people.

"the 360 had about 500K at launch...right?"

Pretty sure there were 300,000 360s in total, counting both SKUs.

Don't come to me with your PERSONAL preferences!

If you want to spend hours discussing games then you better do it somewhere else I got no time for that.

All I know is Resistance: Fall OF Man (40 players online is enough for me)

So is MotorStorm(in some weeks)online with your own custom soundtracks.

Don't blame me I'm gonna be playing HDMI(720p) games on blu-ray discs.

You could get a job and save up too, if not then leave me alone.

Why are the poor folks buying launch models???? Those models are full of deficiencies!
THE LAUNCH MODEL IS THE DEFICIENCY THE SAME!!!

Additionally the 2006 games are mediocre!! Some good games will start showing after Spring 2007.
VF5, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Devil May Cry 4 etc...

raiden fan:

there won't be long lines nor ebay campers. well there might be ebayers but they won't make that much of a profit really. And I dare say that it happened to 360 a lot last year too.

Now I'mma be happy again and wait for PlayStation3 next week without those STUPID campers in my way.

"I am pretty sure that there was less than 400k on launch day, but Sony said they would have that amount by the end of 2006."

No, there's supposed to be over a million PS3s AT LEAST by the end of 2006 in the US alone. I guess there could be even more, but they've got to save some of them for the European launch.

Yeah, some places in Canada had 6 preorders, but only received one unit. My particular city only received 1500 PS3s and I'm in one of the larger ones (million people).
There is no doubt about it that there was less than 400,000 units at launch, because that would mean that since a whole bunch of places were slashing their shipment counts, other places would be getting more than they originally were allotted. I never read anything about places getting more.

Don't you feel sorry for all those people paying thousands of dollars for PS3s on ebay right now, thinking there's no more for christmas out there?

...

hahahahahahahahahaha

yah CBC news hehe.

In the article it also stated that Canada only got 8% of the 400k, so 32000... One ps3 for every a thousand Canadians, all though not one person I know had a problem getting a ps3 up here (no nasty violence either), but aside from preorders there was short supply and some people went home empty handed. Luckilly 3 of my buddies each got one so I'll get to take a crack at it later. It looks like wii will go hitch free as well up here.

I thought it was 300k or so 360s at launch for the US. Hopefully somewhere in those next 400-500k PS3s coming to the US in the next few weeks will be my PS3 =P.

from my personal experience if there are any hardware problems my first guess would be users error.
My system was on playing games and Blu-rays for a good 8 hours straight yesterday.
And i just got down playing about 3 hours of Resistance online(which is insane, absolute bedlam on some maps with 40 players, no lag either) And my system has yet to overheat or crash or anything.

It does actually move the heat out of the top if its standing, or right side if your looking at it and its horizontal.

I am pretty sure that there was less than 400k on launch day, but Sony said they would have that amount by the end of 2006.

I think that the launch day shipment for the US was supposed to be 100k.

Weren't there less than 400k PS3s on launch day? It really seems that way since most stores only received a portion of what they were supposed to get. When do you think we'll get numbers on units sold?

leetdude 11.18.2006 at 08:00:10 PM
Well, that's good. Even if there are release problems, it (hopefully) won't be like certain old systems, with no available units for months and months after release.

I personally think the 400K units on launch day is a bit off. It was WAY harder to get a PS3 on launch day than it was to get a 360 and if I recall the 360 had about 500K at launch...right? Someone correct me if I'm wrong on that number.
