News - Wii Virtual Console controller support

It has long been questioned just how you can control the Virtual Console games on the upcoming (just one more hour) Wii. Do we need to buy a classic controller? Can we use GameCube controllers? How many games can the Wiimote control?
Nintendo has answered these questions with a handy chart it has on
this page. I've included the chart below for your viewing pleasure. It looks like the safe bet is getting the classic controller. But for those of us who already owned a GameCube, we'll be able to play all but some Genesis games.
Thanks to
jekku for the tip.

Called them again today when they opened. They took our information again, and said again that they'd call us back. This time they said in 2 days. Unfortunately, we're going on vacation for 5 days, with no wifi, so we're s*** out of luck.
Thanks, Nintendo.

Keep pestering them Neko. That's how I always get it done, though never with Nintendo since I've never had an issue with anything of theirs.

Wavebird works fine. At least, it did when I tried Resident Evil 4 last night.
Never got a call back from Nintendo.

Something I've been wondering is if you choose to use a wavebird controller, would it interfere at all in the systems normal processes? I imagine that while using a game cube controller the sensor bar disables itself, but you just kinda have to wonder.

I checked the VC channel today and it showed that Sonic is compatible with the Gamecube controller. I think it's safe to say that all Genesis games will be able to use it.

Guess I'll just buy them in the store then....but not until I see some Gunstar Heroes on the Wii Shop.

An update for anyone who cares:
Girlfriend spent an hour on the phone with Nintendo (because it was her who bought the points), transferred her call about 4 times because no one knew what they should do. They let her go and said they'll call her back tonight with an update.
I freaking hope so.

Because it's so hard to imagine that something would go wrong, right? I mean, your single positive experience means that nothing bad is happening to anyone else, right?
I want my points or my $10, I don't care which.

For the record, you CAN put your VC games on an SD card. You just can't take that SD card and play those VC games on someone else's console. It only functions on yours. It states this in the system manual.

So then... if the Wii is officially sold out of its initial launch stock... that means there are roughtly 1mil wii's out there right now since that is seemingly what Nintendo is reporting that they sent (read it in USA Today)...
1mil > 100-300k

Tell your friend not to bother. The Wii is officially sold out everywhere outside of NYC, and those are probably just about gone by now. Orlando, for instance, was sold out as soon as the stores opened. Zelda is sold out as well, seeing that there weren't even enough copies of it to go around to people who bought Wii's.
I can't wait to pick up a Wii, but it's gonna be when I randomly see one on the store shelf with a copy of Zelda sitting beside it. This camping and waiting in line stuff is just silly.

muguga:
At this point, its looking pretty grim, but tell your buddy to try looking around at major electronics retailers: Futureshop, Best Buy, Target, Wal Mart, Comp USA (maybe), Circuit City, and I'm sure there are others down in Florida I'm forgetting.
Don't bother with places like gamestop/EB, since they took pre-orders.

"the disc swapping actually functions exactly as it did on the 'cube."
I can attest to that. I accidently ejected wii sports and figured (through Playstation intuition) that it would go back to the bios (Wii channel menu). To my surprise, absolutely nothing happened. This pretty much solves every issue with disc swapping for multiple disc games for the GC, and Wii and will make importing games a cinch with the right disc.
Fantastic.

"And once again, if GAMETAP can emulate Saturn games, there's no reason NINTENDO can't."
Oh yeah, I'll bet they could've emulated the Saturn, but I think storage space is the big issue. The Wii's internal memory can't even hold an entire CD. And I seem to recall hearing that you can't transer VC games to a removable source like an SD card (though you can download them as many times as you want once you've purchased them). Plus I think Nintendo waffled on the whole external hard drive deal.

"So can someone confirm for me that in Mario 64 the L button is used for the crouching/hip drop function? I can't imagine trying to use that Z button for it. :\"
Read a few posts down. It's changed from when I played at E3 (IE: unplayable for skilled players). L is mapped to Z, though in my opinion it should be fully customizable.
And once again, if GAMETAP can emulate Saturn games, there's no reason NINTENDO can't.

I waited outside of Target from 11:30 to 8, in the cold. It was miserable. But definately worth it. There was pretty much no other way to obtain one around here.
So is the virtual console actually up and running yet? I want to try out my classic controller once Nintendo's slow-ass servers are finished sending me these updates. Unfortunately, it seems the controller doesn't work with GC games.

I camped a non-superstore Wal-Mart with two friends. we got there at 7, I was number 12 of 30. at midnight, they started letting us in 5 at a time, with the option of purchasing as many titles as we wanted, but only one of each. (no buying multiple copies of Zelda.) we were also limited to one additional Wiimote and one classic controller if we so chose. I ended up grabbing the console, Zelda, a Wiimote and the Classic controller.
I was glad to be as far up the list as I was, as it didn't look like there were many accessories or copies of Zelda left by the time I got in.
also, a fun fact for those wondering: you can play import Gamecube games, if you have a Gamecube Game Shark or Freeloader, on your Wii. the disc swapping actually functions exactly as it did on the 'cube.

So is it this monday, as in the 20th, that new VC games are coming out? they said every monday but I'm wondering if this monday is included.. I hope so, because theres no games I really want to spend that amount of money on, I mean, I want f zero, sim city, mario, and sonic, but.. not for that expensive... I'm gonna wait till gunstar heroes/ super metroid / etc.
anyone know if this monday is included?

ununbiundave 11.20.2006 at 12:29:05 AM
Looking forward to Gunstar Heroes becoming available. As for earlier posts about long waits; I camped in front of a 24 hr Walmart for about 6 hours, only for their stock numbers to mysteriously drop by 4. I got bumped off, and ended up at Circuit City in the morning, last one in line. Every other place... 2 Targets, 2 other Walmarts, 2 Best Buys, 1 Toys R Us, and about 5 EB Games/Gamestops... all overloaded. What a glorious and frustrating time it was.

Saturns are still proving tough to emulate, too. I wonder if they could even manage it. I'd love to see it, though.

I doubt you'll see Saturn games. It wouldn't be good PR for Nintendo to let companies release VC games that could potentially take up over half, if not all, of the Wii's built in 512mb.

Guardian Heroes please. I mean, I have my Saturn hooked up, but I'd like to not have to have it hooked up.
We have a better chance of getting SNK's games though considering how much SNK seems to love Nintendo's lower costs.
And I can only understand the Classic Controller being uncomfortable and awkward if you have big hands. My hands are fairly average size and it fits me like a glove.

I like how everyone writes you off when you say something just because a product isnt out yet. there are ways to use a product before it hits the shelve.

"Playing Mario 64 at E3 with the classic controller was the worst experience ever. See that small button to the left of the R button? yeah thats it, talk about f***ing uncomfortable."
Yep. Due to the button mapping at E3, Mario 64 was rendered unplayable for skilled players (average Joes probably don't care, as they don't know how to actually -play- the game).
FORTUNATELY, the L button IS mapped to Z for 64 titles NOW. Thank god.

Genesis and TurboGrafx-16 are likely undetermined because Nintedo is leaving it up to them to decide how they want their games played. Otherwise, they'd know, right?
I played the Wii for my first time today. The controller worked perfectly.

the L button on the Class and GC controller better be mapped as the N64 Z button or theres gonna be a huge f***ing problem.
they better let us remap it or something, because no one used the Z button and the Dpad/L button at the same time.

GC's L and R buttons are horrible for pre-GC games. the stuff they have make them hard to use with games that use L/R a lot. i have some problems with OoT/MM with it.

Any idea on when the next Wii shipment is?
Every ****ING store in this Texas small town I'm in has full lines or full camp-outs. Couldn't find ANYBODY to play videogames, and, on the most crucial day possible, WHAM, HERE THEY COME. Like roaches.
So when's the next shipment?
