News - Gamestop reports on tie ratios for Wii and PS3, strong 360 sales

In a recent conference call, games retailer Gamestop talked a bit about tie ratios (games sold to systems sold) for the PS3 and Wii systems, as well as the recent sales of the Xbox 360 and PS2.
The Wii had a tie ratio of 3.0, with
Zelda: Twilight Princess and
Red Steel being its highest selling games. The PS3's tie ratio was a bit lower at 1.5, with
Resistance: Fall of Man and
Madden NFL 07 being the top sellers. Gamestop attributes the lower PS3 tie ratio to the fact that many buyers intended to resell it online and thus didn't want extra games with it.
Despite the outlook many people have of not being able to get PS3s in time for the holidays, Gamestop says they expect PS3 shipments to be more regular than the erratic 360 shipments from last year.
Speaking of the 360, it's being doing very well recently, thanks in large part to
Gears of War, which has become the premier 360 title as of late.
And lest we forget, the PS2 is still a viable choice for many gamers, especially at its $129.99 price point. Gamestop says PS2 sales have remained consistent, despite the two new next-gen console releases.

I think it's more than that. Nintendo and Microsoft have repeatedly taken blame for their previous mistakes, (and offer to fix them for free) yet when Sony breaks their promises... an overpaid executive who's never played a game in his life comes out and says, "Well, that's the way it goes! You know how it is!" And they didn't even meet half of their system launch number predictions, (which was projected to be about one tenth of Nintendo's Wii shipments) not to mention being almost half a year late launching in Europe just like with the PSP, and that was after it had already been lowered once. Even the most jaded people don't buy into, "Oh the system is supposed to come broken." forever.

Just like people misinterpreted Phil Harrison's statements of SONY not being able to make their March European launch. Where he said that "maybe" they won't meet it but that CANNOT confirm anything and that it's up in the air.
Same thing my friend
It's just people forgive Nintendo and Microsoft.

Not at all. I'm not sure any PR department has utterly failed as spectacularly as Sony's has this year.
That said, Ninteodo has never had a stellar PR department. Remember when Perrin Kaplan said the Wii is region free?"
Actually you misinterpreted her statement, which is thus...
"You%u2019re right that the region-free approach has proved to be a successful and attractive feature for Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection on Nintendo DS %u2014 we have even blown the doors off our own anticipated numbers! Cost, ease-of-use and player privacy are the three things that were a focus for us with Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Those priorities also will apply to the Wii system." -PK
She didn't agree or disagree either way. So basically she meant that it was something that Nintendo is considering, (it would only take a minor upgrade to do so).

Thank god I pre ordered my Wii, I was absolutely Shocked at how long the lines were in KC, it was sold out almost instantaniously
Thank the lord for our plethora of Walmarts one Supercenter ended up getting alot of Wiimotes so I was able to snag one up.
4 other walmarts, a best buy, a circuit city and a target all had Tents and lines comparable to the PS3's, I was pleased to find out all the Wii's had been completely sold out
the NPD numbers are going to be amazing.

Gamestop = 360 fanboys.
Evident by Zelda's recent score on their site.

Interesting thnigs going on on your side of the pond. Should be more interesting to see the u.k/eu numbers since there's only 360 for Wii to go up against for xmas.
December is gonna be a cool month (not only because my birthday is in it either, lol).
I have to admit I've never purchased a Madden game, but I'd consider it for the Wii. I watched the EA video and its looks excellent. I'd also have to agree that the line up of Wii games does trump the PS3s, so that's why sales primarily reflect this.
For the real truth we'll wait for the figures to come in.

daetrin: Naw, everyone here knows I'm a Nintendo fanboy. I'm not making excuses, I'm just trying to be unbiased when looking at the numbers. I fully expect, in reality, Nintendo's ratio would have been higher if there were more copies of Zelda available, but you also have to take into consideration that the Zelda disc is as hot, if not hotter of a commodity than the Wii console itself right now.

Hmm... I see a certain Wii game sitting as the second best rated game of all time right now, but no PS3 games. Stupid Nintendo, making good games to sell systems. Everyone knows that's not good business.

proppat: what you say about Zelda is true, but your way of stating it makes it sound like an excuse. I appologize if it wasn't your intent but it comes across to me as "Well Nintendo's done pretty well so far, but only because they had 'must have' title on release and Sony didn't, so don't give them too much credit."
However that's really what getting a console is fundamentally about, getting the good games. Nintendo and Sony have different philosophies about what makes a good game and it's still far too early to tell how well each company will do in the long run, but so far it seems that by making sure there were games everyone wanted out early and more consoles to go around that Nintendo is doing everything right so far (from a marketing standpoint at least.)

Last comment for now, I promise. :) The exciting thing about Wii is that it could actually convince me to play Madden. The fact that the controller can make fun games out of genres that I used to have no interest in is amazing.

Uhhh...
"Both systems both only have one game truly worht owning, right now."
Maybe you meant something else, but you're pretty clear on what you think there. PS3, apart from a few multiplatforms and Resistance, doesn't have games worth owning YET (that'll change pretty soon). Wii, on the other hand, has Twilight Princess, Raving Rabbits, Trauma Center and Madden '06 that are really worth getting, all of them. Of course I wouldn't personally get Madden. Though, I haven't bought a sports game in maybe... 6 years.

As of now, the only place I've seen due Wiiviews is IGN and all the Wii games there have not gone below a 7.5, which is very VERY respectable.

I guess my point, which was too wishy-washy, is that I think Wii does have better games. The lineup is larger and there are more titles I really wish I could afford to buy.
That's my opinion, not yours.

you guys are missunderstanding me. Im not saying that "there is only one game worth owning or only one fun game"
But i would bet there is a large percentage of people who bought Zelda with the Wii, and of those who were keeping their PS3 a large percentage bought Resistance.

I disagree with the idea that only games with 9.x's are "truly worth" buying. I've got tons of games with average scores ranging from 6.5-9.0 all of which I enjoyed a lot. Some are better than others, but at the end of the day I'd rather have a 6.8 platformer than a 9.1 football game.

The PS3's tie ratio is better than at the Japanese launch, but still nothing in comparison to the Wii. I don't know how many have crunched the numbers, but if the Wii ratio is 3.0, it means that 3 million games were sold with the Wii. A 1.5 for the PS3 means (assuming the original shipment of 450,000 units is true) They sold roughly 675,000 games. One thing to remember is that these are the results from Gamestop only, and it could vary between different retailers.
Still, they're not buoying up the Wii's numbers with Wii Sports, are they?

nambit 11.21.2006 at 02:28:35 PM
dohhyulittle, the Wii aparently has more than just one game truly worth owning if you ask the folks who purchased them. I was amazed on how my friend and others I talked to (who, by the way are PC and XBOX gamers) are loving all the wii games they purchased.
If you are basing the comments on reviews, they are all over the place too. You just can't trust them right now. Besides, anything 6.5 or up is still a good game... but I hate the whole notion of numerical scoring systems.
I'm so suprised on how many people are loving the games, despite the obvious graphical limitations. It looks like many people are waking up to real gaming again... perhaps handhelds are to blame. It's all good in my books.

nambit 11.21.2006 at 02:23:11 PM
The wii numbers probably could have been higher. Some stuff to consider:
1. It comes with a pack-in game already so folks might not buy something else yet.
2. Wii-motes/nunchucks/classic controllers are also eating game sales. Many sold out.
3. People will ask inquiries about the wii more than ps3 due to them having a better chance getting one.
4. Many stores I've been to are sold out of almost all Wii games, including EB games!

Seems the news people 'round here cant catch a break.
First they are "being unfair to PS3 and Sony" now they are being "unfair to the Wii and Nintendo."
There is nothing wrong with this article, 1.5 is a bit lower regardless that 3 is double 1.5, if it were say 2.5 to 4, it would still be a bit lower.
Also the Wii has better games? Both systems both only have one game truly worht owning, right now.

drmariokart 11.21.2006 at 01:41:04 PM
Since when is 1.5 "a bit lower" than 3.0? If double is marginal, the PS3 is "a bit higher" than the Wii in price.

Yeah, it's not just the resale of PS3's that is hurting the tie ratio. It's the number and quality of Wii launch games (Twilight Princess especially), and the different costs of the systems.
Pleaseohplease sales numbers soon.

I work at gamestop, and for every call/question about the ps3 i get... i get about 5 for the wii... i think that the wii would sell more even if the ps3 had just as many units as nintendo did... and at the price of the wii... people.. especially parents... are willing to buy a couple extra games than for the ps3... this of course is my opinion

proppat 11.21.2006 at 01:19:10 PM
Gamestop's numbers don't reflect reality, though. I have a feeling that those who camped for preorders were more likely to keep their PS3 than those who camped before release. Same goes for Wii buyers. Also, the Wii's number is skewed upwards, because everyone in line bought a copy of Zelda to either play or to ebay. There really wasn't a "must have" title on the PS3 that was assured sell out, especially seeing that the number of consoles sold was so small anyway.

dohhyulittle 11.21.2006 at 01:18:10 PM
they mean tie ratio, as in for every 1 console sold the wii sold 3 games, for every ps3 sold 1.5 games went with it.

joesteele 11.21.2006 at 01:14:55 PM
I think the title should be "tie in".
Honestly, 1.5 is actually higher than what I expected, but that's still really poor for a system launch. Hopefully for Sony those guys buying on ebay will go out and pick up games soon to pick up the slack.
