News - Wii launches in Japan; sells out

Today was indeed the day that
Nintendo launched the Wii in Japan. Not surprisingly, the 400,000 initial units sold out. Lines of people waiting for the Wii were very long, with the line at the Bic Camera store in Tokyo's Yurakucho surpassing 1,500 people and the Yodobashi Camera line being cut off at 3,000, according to Famitsu.
Nintendo's expecting to ship 600,000 more Wiis to Japan by the end of the year.
Here a small sample of what the launch lines looked like (credit for the pics goes to Famitsu and Game Watch):

Who cares about the predictions? I mean, really? People have opinions and they say things. Big deal. They are not obligated to "back up" whatever they thought at the time. This is so not a topic viable for discussion..

I'm not gonna take the time to find a bunch of old articles and forum discussions now, but I clearly remember that many people were predicting that the PSP would be the DS's downfall. It might have been different with developers and industry analysts, as bidingtime's research indicates, but among forumites and gaming websites, the PSP was the cool new kid on the block. It's funny how things turned around.

"If someone makes the claim that all the media was predicting doom and gloom for the DS, and is called on it, it is THEIR obligation to present the evidence to back up their claim."
But people who claim no one but Sony fanboys predicted success for the PSP get a free ride, right?
"If you're going to play a grown-up's game, come prepared."
Since when did internet debates have anywhere near the amount of maturity needed to be classified as a "grown-up's game"?
Also, I'd like to thank bidingtime for taking the effort to look up the information I was to lazy to search for.

"mikey> you need to clue yourself in here. If someone makes the claim that all the media was predicting doom and gloom for the DS, and is called on it, it is THEIR obligation to present the evidence to back up their claim. "
You DO realize that you're the one who came in with guns blazing in an attempt to plow through history and revise it to your standards, right? I usually agree with you, but not here. You're claiming they need to come to the game with 20 articles, yada yada. You're the one who first represented questionable data, so it's actually YOUR responsibility to "come to the game" and play like a man with your "responsible" data.

nekofrog: read anything on 1up, in their podcasts, and on their video show and you'll see plenty of references to how they all though the PSP would win and no longer think that. That applies to the entire range of the Ziff Davis publications, web and print. In their words. If you want an explicit direction to take, it's right there in last week's podcast (and mentioned in most episodes). I saw the same being said in IGN and GameSpot as well.
Saying the PSP would beat out the DS was the position to take before the battle began and for almost a year into the DS's life. GAF was critisized because we didn't believe that would happen. You can obviously argue that many outlets didn't say the PSP would outright win, that it would just steal a major chunk of the market share...and then maybe win years later, or that it would beat the DS but then be beaten by the next Game Boy. The fact is that many major outlets believed the PSP to be a longterm viable competitor to the DS, but unless things change PSP is on its way out.
Your entire line of comments here has been revisionist history. And you are the only one here who could spin people saying that most didn't have faith in Nintendo as something pro-Nintendo. Don't harass people for links because you'd like to pretend things were different. And don't bother asking me for links. This has been my job for over five years and I know full well how things were being covered two years ago.

bidingtime 12.4.2006 at 11:54:04 AM
I took Nekofrog's challenge. A Google search for "psp vs ds predictions 2005" turned up a bunch of results, and they seem to be split quite evenly on which one will win.
Gamasutra did a survey of developers (link below). The respondents to Gamasutra's survey favoured DS because PSP had too many ports, but there wasn't much conviction that DS would sell better.
http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20050915/hong_01.shtml
I also found a forum that has collected some sales predictions from analysts for the sake of comparison to real-life sales. (Link: http://forum.pcvsconsole.com/viewthread.php?tid=20488) Again, there's a split, but the numbers favour PSP:
SIG (Worldwide Through 2007)
Sony PSP - 38 million
Nintendo DS - 28 million
UBS (U.S. Through 2007)
Sony PSP - 15 million
Nintendo DS - 10 million
IDG (U.S. Through 2008)
Nintendo DS - 20 million
Sony PSP - 17.6 million
So as is often the case...the truth lies somewhere in the middle. I'm sure I could find the 20 articles Nekofrog asked for, but I could find 20 predicting DS would win too.

nekofrog 12.4.2006 at 11:33:07 AM
It doesn't matter that the PSP outsold the DS in the US for almost a year, because in Japan, the DS has always been leagues ahead of the DS.
That means that the DS, worldwide, has outsold the PSP since day one.

bidingtime 12.4.2006 at 11:08:55 AM
A few interesting points on hardware history here:
- GameCube took an entire week to sell 330,000/450,000 units during its Japanese launch, so Wii is doing a lot better.
- PSP outsold DS in North America for the better part of a year before DS finally came back. So the notion that DS is winning because Nintendo automatically wins the handheld market doesn't really stand up to scrutiny.

mikey> you need to clue yourself in here. If someone makes the claim that all the media was predicting doom and gloom for the DS, and is called on it, it is THEIR obligation to present the evidence to back up their claim.
It is not the responsibility of the obligation to find whatever "fact" (and there is none in this case on his side) to support the opposing arguement.
Sheesh.
Keep the negative karma coming, guys. You obviously can't bear to hear anything that isn't rosy-dosy for Nintendo.

Heartless, you have no idea what you're talking about. "Sales", in my post, meant the number of consoles sold. It's not that hard to figure that out, is it?
It has nothing to do with price.

Sorry I didn't get a chance to report on this first-hand, but I had a really important test the day after.
Interestingly enough, I ended up buying a Wii even though I didn't line up - and it was noon on launch day with still no line! I bought it at Shinjuku Yodobashi Camera, which is one of the bigger electronics store in Tokyo. It seems they handed out vouchers the night before instead of having people stay out all night in the cold and they happened to have some left over even in the morning! Nice.
Also, a lot of other stores had pre-order systems in place so all the systems on launch day went to pre-orders only

There`s a clear chance for Nintendo to climb back to number one in hardware sales, and there`s nothing wrong about cheering them a little...

Way to be a complete dick Neko! You flame people for not doing extensive research and looking through 2 year old news archives of websites. If you want to spend hours of time researching the Nintendo DS circa 2004 with archive.org, you can go right ahead, but turning up news articles and opinion pieces from only 2 years ago is harder than it sounds. As for print magazines? Have fun with back-ordering issues of expensive magazines to prove a point to some stranger over the internet!
I didn't know that this was some Orwellian society where the present controlls the past, but apparently your hazy recollections of events that transpired 2 years ago are good enough to call fact. Don't even BOTHER replying without AT LEAST 20 credible sources for your BS.

I can't speak for the others who did it, nekofrog, but I gave you negative karma because you claimed that no one aside from Sony fanboys gave the PSP a chance. A year and a half ago, pretty much every single article on the subject predicted the PSP to be huge. Before it was released, everyone thought DS was a gimmick and possibly the next Virtual Boy.
So I gave you negative karma for using nothing but incorrect information to present an argument. Don't presume to know the motives behind complete strangers' actions. You'll likely be wrong most of the time.

Eh, it's kind of hard to tell if they'd stay in third. Yeah, MS gets a TON of sales in the US but gets little in Japan while Nintendo still gets respectable numbers here and absolutely phenomenal numbers in Japan. I'd say that evens out the playing field between them a bit.

Based on what possible evidence, byourdan?
The DS never had any real competition. The PSP was nothing, the only people touting it were Sony fanboys, and that was only the hardest of the hardcore. Everyone else never gave the PSP even a remote chance against the DS (and rightfully so).
The PS3 is going to, in the end, most likely demolish the Wii in sales. It will claim the place as the winner in sales this generation, just as the PS2, and the PS1 before it.
That's not to say that the Wii will be unsuccessful for Nintendo; far from it. It will earn them a profit, as usual, but it's likely they will remain 3rd, globally, behind Microsoft. The US has -that- much of a hardon for Sony and MS.

sirusd, the demand IS still there, but it's not nearly as much as it would have been if the PS3 (whatever its features) had been more affordable. Of course it's going to sell out when they only have enough units to supply the people who REALLY want one enough to spend tons of money on it.
The real question is how many people would be willing to pay $600 for a PS3 if they were readily available.

I don't think we'll be seeing the 64/PS1 days this gen with respect to the Wii and the others. The Wii is in a league of its own. I do, however, believe that the 360 has an impressive enough line-up over the next 12 months in NA and Europe to give the PlayStation brand's established franchises a run for their money. My crystal ball forecasts many dual-platform games this gen that were formerly PS-exclusives.

Competition is good if the companies are competing for the same thing. Since the game consoles do not play each other's games, it means that in the realm of "Nintendo games" there is no competition, in the realm of "Microsoft games" there is no competition, etc.

why do you want a particular company to fall???
wouldn't that DULL the gaming industry.....stop focusing on 1 company and start believing in the power of competition(N64 VS PlayStation).
I love both SONY and Nintendo to no end, and I'm really rooting for them both because I loved the great N64/PlayStation days and I hope to see that kind of battle again.

If the Wii does more sales in Japan than the PS3 on a consistent basis.... that's it. It'll be PSP vs DS all over again. We'll be playing Final Fantasy VII Wii-Make, and 10+ exclusive SquareEnix titles while the PS3 sits back lonely with FFXIII and FFXIII Versus.. which will end up continually delayed to inject more pointless ramble drama ala FFVII: Crisis Core.
That said, I prefer playing against Japanese opponents on my DS... bring them to me on the Nintendo Wii. They will fall and fall fairly!
