News - Virtua Fighter 5 announced for 360; no longer PS3-exclusive

Posted by Josh Freund at 12:15:53 PM EST on 12.21.2006.

Today, Sega made the shocking (or not so shocking, depending on what camp you're in) announcement that the next title in its Virtua Fighter series will be coming to the Xbox 360. VF 5 had originally been announced as PS3-exclusive.

“Those people lucky enough to have already played Virtua Fighter 5 [in the arcades] will know that it’s laid the foundations to become the clear benchmark for fighting games on all next generation consoles”, said Matt Woodley, Creative Director, SEGA Publishing Europe Ltd. “Bringing Virtua Fighter 5 to the Xbox 360 offers us a platform with power to handle the astonishing visuals, the complex and varied fighting styles of all the customisable characters and will undoubtedly put Virtua Fighter 5 into the hands of a gaming audience craving for a highly polished and credible fighting game.”

Virtua Fighter 5 for 360 is slated for a late summer release, while the PS3 version should be out in February.

No problem man. Its the most comprehensive and, most importantly, unbiased comparison I've seen.

Thanks for the article darc requiem, its very in dept, and I was searching for something like that. Both PS3 and Xbox 360 has its pros and cons.

YOu tell 'em 'bout the graphical differences terpfen.

If developers do indeed point out that the PlayStation3 has superior graphics, then that's that =D.

People here crack me up, they bashed this game to death when it was PlayStation3 exlcusive and now they're all saying how much they love the game now. Bunch of hypocrates.

Anyway this is SEGA(company which SONY knocked around for years) =). No surprise.

reasons why this isn't that great:

Virtua Fighter doesn't sell well in the U.S.
360 doesn't sell well in Japan

so what's the point? Anyway there are way too many PlayStaion fans out there.

To Ferose2:

I stand by my assertion that the 360 is the superior console overall. I had assumed that the PS3 would be superior in most aspects because it was being released after the 360. Thats the way it has usually been in the console market. Here is a link to the most indepth article I could find when it comes to comparing the PS3 and 360.

To darc requiem:
It appears as though you have been reading too many Pro-Microsoft articles.

"The 360 cpu has 6 [GENERAL PURPOSE] threads to the the Cells 2 [GENERAL PURPOSE]."
In addition to 2 General Purpose threads, Cell has 6 specialized threads, one for each SPE, while Xenon has none. There is a downside to specialized processing power, with the current developers kit, the developers have to use different compliers to take advantage of Cell Broadband Engine..

"The 360 has 6 times the bandwith 278.4 GBs to the PS3's 48 GBs."
PS3 bandwidth: 256MB 3.2GHz XDR going at 25.6 Gbs (3.2GBs) 256 GDDR3 going at 22.4 Gbs (2.8GBs)
360 bandwidth: 512MB GDDR3 going at 22.4 Gbs (2.8GBs) 10MB eDRAM Gbs (32GBs)
10MB is not good for texture mapping, but it can be useful for several other features, like anti-aliasing, alpha blending, or z buffering. eDRAM may make certain tasks faster, but its nothing significant.
PS3's 3.2GHz XDR memory is synchronous with the CPU, making it more efficient, and less power hungry.

"The 360 has lower load times. The 360s DVD drive is significantly faster than the PS3's Blu-Ray drive."
Although DL-DVD should usually be faster than Blu-Ray, it is not significantly faster. I have a feeling you are assuming the DVD drive is faster than the Blu-Ray drive because the DL-DVD drive for 360 is 12x and Blu-Ray for PS3 is 2x. The "x" means different speed for these different formats. It's like a 54x CD drive is faster than a 16x DVD drive. 12x DL-DVD goes at 8.2-15.9 MB/s, while a 2x Blu-Ray goes at a constant 8.6 MB/s.

"Its been known that the 360's GPU has the edge over the PS3's RSX GPU for quite some time now."
Xenos has the edge over RSX if you do a theoretical calculation of RSX being based on Geforce 6800. The truth is, RSX is based on Gefore 7800, and if you recalculate, RSX will have the edge over Xenos, but this shouldn't matter because the different is very small.

Oh, and Factor-5, as well.

"Factor 5 has already played with Microsoft's Xbox 360, but said the PlayStation 3's 3.2GHz Cell chip offered more processing power over the other hardware options. The added power, allowing for a more realistic gaming experience, fueled the company's decision."

darc requiem, tell that to John Carmack.

"They are both powerful systems that are going to make excellent game platforms, but I have a bit of a preference for the 360%u2019s symmetric CPU architecture and excellent development tools," he said. "The PS3 will have a bit more peak power, but it will be easier to exploit the available power on the 360. Our next major title is being focused towards simultaneous release on 360, PS3, and PC."

http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1974&Itemid=2

In other words... 360's easier to develop for, PS3 has more theoretical horsepower. And ease of development means absolutely nothing in a console war, given the utter nightmare that was the PS2... which wound up winning.

Why do people still believe Sony's BS when it comes to the power of the PS3? Outside of the superior floating point abilities of the Cell processor, a built in HDMI port, and the larger storage that Blu-Ray provides the PS3 is inferior to the 360.

The 360 cpu has 6 threads to the the Cells 2.

The 360 cpu has better integer and general purpose processing power.

The 360 has 6 times the bandwith 278.4 GBs to the PS3's 48 GBs.

The 360 has lower load times. The 360s DVD drive is significantly faster than the PS3's Blu-Ray drive.

Its been known that the 360's GPU has the edge over the PS3's RSX GPU for quite some time now.

The PS3 and 360 both have 512MBs of RAM but since the PS3 divides its RAM into 256MB for Main and 256MB for Video, it gives devs less flexibility. Its why 360 titles always seem to have better texturing than there PS3 counter parts. If you want to use 384MBs of the 360's 512MBs of RAM for textures you can. The PS3 doesn't provide that sort of flexibility.

Sony should have worried more about the PS3's chipset/RAM and less about the inclusion of a Blu-Ray drive.

"The PS3 is more powerful than the 360, but not as much Sony might make you think."

Apparently there is a difference significant enough to be notable by developers who've actually worked on both machines, but hey.

The way the two seem to break down is that the 360 is easier to program for, but the PS3 is more powerful. This isn't to say that the 360 can't hold its own in terms of processing, or that the PS3 is a nightmare to work on like the PS2, but the differences are there.

"The White Engine is a graphics engine, and like any graphics engine, it can be reprogrammed to run on another platform."

At the considerable expense of time, money, and manpower. Such a decision would be made only if S-E determines that the expensive initial investment would eventually lead to significant profit. And I'm not sure if they really believe it will, given the 360's lackluster performance in Japan.

Still, score one for Microsoft, and minus one for Sony on this particular incident. I do have a couple of questions about this move, though. One, will the port be available in all regions, or is this meant for non-Japan territories, like how Armored Core 4's 360 version is available only outside of Japan? And two, what took Sega so long to announce this?

Yep, damn good news. What Sega need to do is get with the program and get VF5 online (no more excuses), Xbox Live has the infrastruture set up to make online brawls something special. Stay for five minutes or a long time.

VF5 today, hopefully a dose of Daytona tomorrow. I'm sure Tecmo will be watching this news closely. Thanks a lot Sega.

It's also already been proven in hardware tests that the 360 can perform just as strongly as the PS3. The only reason they chose the PS3 in the first place is because of how close the arcade board is to the PS3. The 360 version will look just as fantastic.

And yeah, it was announced today and no screens for the 360 version have even been shown. The people saying the PS3 is better are merely trolls and/or Sony fanboys.

I'm sure the PS3 one will be better. Fighters are usually eye candy, because the only art the artists have to work on is character and backdrop art. You can shove a whole lot more poly's and effects on the screen. Heck, DoA3 for the Xbox still remains just about the best looking game on the system, even though it was a launch title.

Well, I'm definitely buying a 360 next summer then.

I'm extremely happy right now. Honestly though, I just hope that Microsoft doesn't try to force AM2 into shoehorning in online. The game simply doesn't work competitively when you introduce lag (any lag at ALL) into the equation.

So it s now up to Sony to step up as a 1st party developer to lead the way because I just don't trust any 3rd parties anymore.

MGS4 would be the end for Sony and that s a big IF...Kojima loves Sony but will have to see if he loves $$$ when Bill Gates offers him a big stack of bills for Christmas....

Oh please let MGS4 come to 360 as well. This way I won't have to buy a PS3 for a very long time (by which time hopefully it'll be cheaper).

But seriously, this is a huge blow for Sony again.

If Sony doesn't start pumping out a LOT of PS3's very soon we're gonna be seeing more and more of this kind of thing. Dragon Quest IX was a major reason for me to get a PS3, now it's on DS. I wasn't to keen on Virtua Fighter but I'm sure a lot of other people are and this is one more reason to get a 360 over a PS3. If Sony was to loose exclusive rights MGS4 or FFXIII it would be a massively crushing blow and definitely help turn the tide of the console war. FFXIII is the only reason left for me to buy a PS3 at this point and if the 360 was to get it there is no way in hell I'd buy a PS3....not for $600 anyway. Xbox 360 is looking damn attractive even without FFXIII, I may just get one anyway. Gears of War, Lost Planet, Oblivion, Bioshock, Fable 2, Blue Dragon, Street Fighter II with online vs play, on and on and on are the reasons for me to buy one.

"but hell, this could ease into other companies deciding to jump ship as well when they see their peers do it (konami, capcom, I'm lookin at you mgs/dmc)"

It really wouldn't surprise me if Square-enix jumps ships as well. The White Engine is a graphics engine, and like any graphics engine, it can be reprogrammed to run on another platform. When square-enix says that the White won't run on the 360, they're basically talking out of their butt, because Hideo Kojima himself said that even a game like MGS4 was possible on the 360. Also isn't the White Engine programmed in one of the C languages?

I not trying to start an argument. I'm just saying that if a game like VF5 is possible on the 360, then square-enix's developers are either lazy or don't want to make more money.

mahew...the Tekken of PlayStation3? You do know there's a Tekken in the making, right? Just because there aren't images yet doesn't mean it's not in the making.

SEGA's kinda smart(finally)since they see the PlayStation3 doing better in Japan and 360 doing better here. They just want to sell in both places, at least EARLY in game's release.

Still PlayStation3 will outperform 360 when they're readily available.

This seems to be the first really big loss PS3 has had to Xbox 360. We've seen lots of new IPs going multiplatform, but here's a long-running series that was exclusive to PS2 for a few years.

Actually, I guess DQ IX was the first big loss - but it didn't go to a direct competitor of PS3.

Sony's mistakes may be a real boon to 360...I always found Xbox's lack of Japanese games disappointing.

mahew 12.21.2006 at 12:43:34 PM
This is interesting, because VF5 was kinda being dubbed the Tekken of PS3. Tekken 6 is nowhere to be seen, so VF5 had taken the role of the PS3 exclusive fighter.

Of course, it is not hard to remember Sega and Microsoft's close ties during the Xbox's initial phase.

Curiously, the press release makes it sound like the 360 version would be the superior one, and with it being released later, Sega could well have the necessary time for extra polish and features for the 360 version.

I didn't see this one coming either. So that leaves two games exclusive to PS3 that I actually want to play. MGS4 and FFXIII. With the way things are going, makes you wonder how long either of those will be exclusive. AM2's stance against on-line play for VF games is the only thing that may prevent me from getting VF5 now. Doubt, I will probably crack and buy it at release. Now that I don't have to pay the cost of the PS3 VF5 Component cables, the lack of online play doesn't seem so bad.
