Sony today announced that it will be releasing six classic
Midway titles on the PS3's Playstation Network this year. The games were chosen based on their multiplayer functionality, and all of the games will be playable online.
Here's the list:
Mortal Kombat II
Gauntlet II
Joust
Rampage World Tour
Rampart
Championship Sprint
Sony expects the first of these games (which one wasn't specified) to be released early this year.
"We knew these titles would be a perfect fit for the Playstation Network, and based on Sony Online Entertainment’s legacy in the online space as well as their intimate knowledge of the Playstation Network, it was an obvious decision they would be a top company to work with to bring this project to fruition,” said Steve Allison, chief marketing officer for Midway.

terpfen. There's a difference between someone who can acknowledge something that's great even though they don't like it and someone who arrogantly bashes something without acknowledging its greatness.
Mortal Kombat really is one of the best fighting games eve made.
Believe me I'd prefer Street Fighter ANY day, but you can't deny the new challenges this game can bring online. Imagine playing the best MK players in Japan, Europe, and the world? that's gotta be the most exciting thing this year.

rampage is fun, not worth buying but MKII is one great fighting game. Back back b is back.

"Somewhat decent?"
Yes, somewhat decent. I'm not a big MK fan, even MK2.

I doubt we'll see Rhondo of Blood on the Wii, seeing that VC games have to be on the internal memory to be played. Even if you have them on your SD card, they'd have to be copied over to the internal. If they shrunk the cd music tracks to MP3's or some other compressed audio, they could do it; however, on the original, they were cd audio tracks."
I think that comes down to compression technology, Koji Igarashi himself is concerned at how Symphony of the Night is going to be available on Xbox Live Arcade, but I think if that happens the Wii could handle Rondo. Hudson promised Super CD games, check. Nintendo is readying the first import game for the Wii in Super Mario: The Lost Levels (Famicom port), check. Konami is on board for the Virtual Console, check. All the pieces are in play, now we wait... and beg.

Isn't it funny how Nekofrog jumps down the Wii's throat when they put up Super Castlevania 4, Gradius, Ristar, Gunstar Heroes, Super Mario 64 etc... but PS3 puts up a relic like MK2 (and 5 games that are even more tired) and he's fawning all over them?

Somewhat decent? MK2 is INCREDIBLY deep; properly balanced characters (for the most part), great looking and varied (as well as imaginative) stages, great moves and finishers, etc.
MK3 was crap, though. MK2 still remains awesome.

How did I know I would get negative karma for not being interested in online play?
None of the games announced are interesting to me. I wonder if the games'visuals will be spruced up as well.

MKII was pretty defining for its time.
Granted, it turned me into a blood thirsty killer who randomly roundhouse kicks people just to see the absurd amount of gore that shoots out of the person's chest. I guess the politician's were right...

Well, MK2 is actually somewhat decent... the rest, no thanks.

Meh. I would rather they just be straight ports. I have little interest in online play.

I just want Starfox 64 and Kirby Super Star...
Since they're supporting TG-16 games, I wonder if we'll ever see Castlevania: Rondo of Blood. Would be nice.

whoa! they'll be playable online! that's sick! I can already see Mortal Kombat ranking on the top 10 online games....
Well that game used to mesmerize the hell out of us back in the 90s.
I wish CAPCOM would release Street Fighter Alpha 3 just like Midway did and ONLINE too....I could die happily after that.

The fact that these titles will be playable online is great, and it's definately a one up on Nintendo's straight ports; however, in the long run will Sony's insistance on companies modifying their games for their services hinder their sucess? I'm sure many companies love the idea of making cash off of old games, but they would probably also rather focus on making new games rather than revamping old ones to make use of online networks, etc.
