Famitsu recently released some new screenshots of the two upcoming remakes of
Final Fantasy and
Final Fantasy II for the PSP. The remakes are coming in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the original
Final Fantasy. Along with completely redone graphics, each game will feature additions that were included in other prior
Final Fantasy I and

there's a lot of nice detailing on the sprites, but I want to see it in motion first. I had problems with Gradius Collection for the PSP because those nice crisp sprites got blurry in motion. either way, thus far it has been said that this has the same extras as FF:DoS for GBA did, plus the FMV from Origins. (Origins also had Amano's artwork, so I cannot call that a new extra at this time.) if there are more incentives, and they bring back the select/cancel technique of stat building in FFII, that might help tip me into buying Final Fantasy 1&2 for the third time, but it's a really tough call. if I could play them on my TV, then I might be further swayed, as I generally prefer it compared to gaming on the go. I'd KILL for being able to play my DS on TV through the Wii, especially for games light on using the touch screen. (Portrait of Ruin, new SMB, etc.)

FF 1 2 3 are games well suited for mobile plat form. They all require lots of leveling, are slightly addictive, and have no epic story what so ever.

Considering that you can already play FF1 and FF2 on the DS, and there isn't that much room for a graphical upgrade between the DS and the GBA (a slight resolution increase), I really don't think that would be the case. Be realistic.

Lot of Nintendo fanboys here.
Believe me I love Nintendo to death and I own a DS and hope to get the Wii. But man, people are hypocrates and plain wrong sometimes.

The problem with the PSP is that most of the ports don't carry over well. All s***-talking about the device itself aside, some awesome games don't really translate that well to it (e.g. Power Stone).
I still think this looks really awesome. It'll probably be a better port than Dawn of Souls if PSP load times don't bog it down. It'll, at the very least, be better than the Origins.
If I could find a PSP for under $100.00, I think I'd pick it up just for this title.

Better yet; don't read my comments.
Even better yet; read them more closely. The point wasn't to promote the PSP, which I don't care about either way beyond getting sick of hearing how the thing is devoid of games worth playing.

I have to say that those are some pretty graphics, it is only a shame that they are being wasted on a game I don't want to play.
Give THIS treatment or the FF3 DS treatment to any of the any of the games from FF4 and beyond, and we will talk. Also someone already mentioned Chrono Trigger, so I will put out this, Secret of Mana.

Some SD3 screenshots were included with a Heroes of Mana press pack. If the gaming press would get off its ass and act competent for a change, they would've asked if those screenshots meant Seiken Densetsu 3 would be included with Heroes of Mana as a bonus.

Very nice looking, but by god have Square Enix lost their damn head? How many freakin times do they wanna sell us these games? Don't take the piss out of me, as much as I love you and your games, I'm not dumb.
Frankly I'm insulted by this, because Square Enix know full well, that fans have been requesting the likes of Chrono Trigger, Bahamut Lagoon, Live A Live, Mana 3 etc for bloddy ages and this is what we get. Why is it so hard to build on these and other titles like Parasite Eve, Threads of Fate instead? Even some DQ remakes are even more worthy. Stop trying to play me, SE.
Talk about money for nothing and the chocobos for free. Considering the size of the UMD, you should be at least getting three of these games on one disc, especially so if the humble GBA could handle two.
Screens look sweet, but I'll wait for this one to hit the bargain bin. You are trying our patience Square, and your lack of vision and originality these days has me very worried for you.

It looks pretty nice. Both the backgrounds and the sprites have a nice "pop" to them. It sucks that they're being released as separate games (rather than as a compilation). Still probably won't buy it (unless I see it for cheap) as Dawn of Souls was a pretty good port. :)
And @porridgeboy: The Portrait of Ruin preorder bonus was awesome. I wouldn't call it little. I mean, you look at most bonuses or special editions and they're usually lacking (compared to Japanese bonuses anyway...). The PoR bonus had a compilation CD of music, a telescoping stylus, a game case, an art book, and a timeline of all the games. I thought it was pretty good, anyway... :)

The thing is, it's literally been years since a Dragon Quest pre-5 was remade. At this point, you'd think they'd approve a compilation package of DQ1-3 or 1-4 for the PSP or something.

rpguy_ad 1.19.2007 at 08:17:23 PM
Quite a few people are asking why Dragon Quest doesn't get boatloads of remakes. If I recall, don't Horii, Toriyama, and Sugiyama actually own some stake in the franchise? If this is true, then I wouldn't be surprised if at least one of the three is showing opposition to the idea of remaking the franchise to the degree of FF.

I think the pictures look great, but I'll be passing on these releases, not that I hate the PSP, but I've beaten these games too many damn times. There are well over 6-7(including future) releases of this game:
Final Fantasy (NES)
Final Fantasy (MSX2)
Final Fantasy 1 2 Bundle (NES)
Final Fantasy (Wonderswan)
Final Fantasy Origins (PSX)
Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls (GBA)
Final Fantasy on NTT DoCoMo FOMA 900i series cells
Final Fantasy on CDMA 1X WIN-compatible W21x
Final Fantasy on SoftBank Yahoo! Keitai phones
Final Fantasy (PSP)
I'm sure this won't be the last time we see the words "Final Fantasy" and "port".

Wow. The answer to that is no. I can see the Mode 7 style. It isn't the map I have the problem with. The sprites (SPRITESSSSS) look like crap. They have a completely different outline from everything around them and it's extremely jarring. It looks horrible.
The super wide head with eyes all the way to the sides reminds me of the awful art style from the original anime Kanon (not the new one, which has marked improvements in that area). Also, if it were so awesomely animated, don't you suppose that could have more than one pose for characters to be standing in? People are giving this far too much credit.
But really, it doesn't matter anyway because the ports are pretty much worthless.

Obviously they are using a mode 7 type of 3D effect for the map. Use your eyes! The graphics are quite detailed more than ever before in 2D, and I bet they animate extremely well. On the other hand... the last thing the PSP needs is another remake, and it how many versions of FF I & II do we need?! I'll never buy a PSP, even if it gets Symphony of the Night.

Those are some nice backgrounds. Shame they didn't do it on the DS. They could have made the backgrounds look like the FFXII RW backgrounds. ;-)
Sure, the FMV wouldn't be as pretty, the sound as "good," the screen as blurry, and the loading times we love on the PSP wouldn't be present.. but it would sell a couple million units more on the DS than it would on the PSP. I suppose Sony paid through the nose for these?
I guess the problem is that the GBA already has 1 & 2, so the DS already has them by default. The main character sprites in those shots seem to be suffering from the same crap that happened to Riviera's sprites on the PSP though...

There aren't actually that many DQ remakes.
DQ1 (NES) - ported to SFC and GBC with DQ2, later to cellphones
DQ2 (NES) - ported to MSX, ported along with DQ1 to the GBC and SFC
DQ3 (NES) - ported to SFC and GBC
DQ4 (NES) - ported to PSX
DQ5 (SFC) - ported to PS2
DQ6 (SFC) - never ported
DQ7 (PSX) - never ported
DQ8 (PS2) - never ported
The DQ4 port was never brought to the US, nothing past DQ3 is portable (officially), and the US never saw DQ5 or DQ6 ever.
Furthermore, only one of those ports was done after the merger of Square and Enix, and that was the DQ5 port to the PS2. Squeenix has re-released a few of the ports in Japan as greatest hits, but nothing beyond that.

I'm looking at this and it reminds me of flash games sprites. Aside from that one Amano headpic, there's hardly anything that looks remotely like classic Final Fantasy or even an attempt at remaking it along some same vein. Not much thought was put into these unless they are trying to cater to the Flash Gaming crowd.
But after 20 years you'd think they'd do something better than this but with almost every gaming company having lacklustre or half-assed "anniversary" celebrations like Capcom with SF2, SNK with a lame remake of KoF 94 and Konami with a small extra with a pre-ordered PoR; it doesn't surprise me that Square would follow suit. But at least Capcom had a decent celebration event with SF2.

FF1 and 2 are still 2 releases behind Mario Party.

So unnecessary. This is the fourth REMAKE of both games. How many times does SE think we're going to buy these? A rather weak anniversary tribute.
