News - February NPD - US hardware & software sales numbers

Posted by Josh Freund at 10:35:13 PM EST on 3.15.2007.

US hardware sales - February 2007

Rank - System - February sales - Lifetime US sales

1. Nintendo DS ~ 485,000 ~ 9,885,000
2. Wii ~ 335,000 ~ 1,851,000
3. PlayStation 2 ~ 295,000 ~ 37,695,000
4. Xbox 360 ~ 228,000 ~ 5,028,000

As you can see, DS and Wii were the big winners this past month. However, while Wii sales were down about 100K from January, DS sales more than doubled from January's 239K, presumably due to fresh stock.

PS2 is still going strong (will it ever stop?). Speaking of long-running systems, the GBA is still selling over 100K a month.

A couple milestones were passed in February - the Xbox 360 has now sold over 5 million in the US, and the PS3 has passed the 1 million mark.

It's a shame that the Wii's Spirng lineup is so dismal.

Have you seen PS3's spring line-up? It's not any better.

360 is the system that has the kick ass titles coming out for it. And they have a ton of hardware at retail. And yet nobody buys it.

So depressing.

It's nice seeing all of the new games on the Top 10 list; we've got Wii, DS, and Xbox 360 games up there and that's cool. I expect that for the month of March, God of War 2 will be the number one best selling game, but just how much will it sell?

As for hardware, the DS selling about half a million units, again, sure is incredible. And about Wii, it really is facing some shortage problems. My friend and I went to close to a dozen stores a week ago and not one of them had a single Wii. On the other hand, half of those stores had between several and "plenty" PS3's. Exciting times.

You have a point regarding it being sold out, but you have to also wonder if, for some, the novelty of owning a Wii won't wear off before they can actually even find one to buy.

I can truthfully say that it did for me - and I have since decided to spend my money on other things.

Plus, the longer it remains sold out and doesn't hit it's sales peak, is time given back to Sony to try and get their act together.

Though I will admit... that's would be quite a feat for Sony to pull off in the near future. LOL

The Wii is still sold out in most places, so I doubt it's reached peak sales yet.

Most of the stuff mentioned for the 360 aren't system sellers. The only one that are sure hits is Halo 3 and GTA4 and one is a port. Wii has Super Mario Galaxy, Super Smash Brothers Brawl as sure fire system sellers. Both Wii Music and Wii Health Pack have the potential carry the torch from Wii Sports as far as being huge(Wii Sports is the reason the Wii is sold out worldwide in case you did't know).

The Wii has 3 top ten titles in February while the 360 has 5. The former has an installed base of 1.8 million and the 360 has 5.5 million. Proportionally, the Wii is doing better. :-)

First-party is not the problem, it's third-party games. And it's not like all first-party games to me are stellar. I have Mario Kart and Pikmin 2 and though I can judge them and say they're well made games, I'm not sure I'll be in for another round, at least not until I see something totally riveting in their next installment.

I'm going to run on the idea that each of my favorite companies should at least have one great (in my opinion) game ready for the Wii for each year. We should expect that much.

caulfield 3.16.2007 at 11:51:03 PM
questworld - I think with the Wii you can sit back and feel confident knowing there will be slews of quality Nintendo titles, regardless of third parties. Mario, Metroid, Zelda, FZero, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, SSB, FE etc. etc. etc will all come out.

To someone who likes Nintendo's games, that is comforting. For someone who doesn't, it isn't. Same goes for the PS3 games you mentioned. Its all a matter of tastes.

And same for Wii... SMG, SSBB, MP3:C.

"As somebody who owned the Xbox 360 a few days before it was released to the public (Mt. Dew contest winner) I can tell you that there was almost NOTHING worth playing except for 2 or 3 games for the better part of 8 months."

For one, that guy was a CONTEST WINNER. So there probably isn't the emotional attachment to a console that someone who bought one may have for it. And for me personally, DOA4 was still worth a buy, Project Gotham was a worthy launch title and there still were a few notables that were very playable and possibly even preferential for the system at that point. Yes, those games weren't exactly killer aps, but they had very serviceable titles even back then.

Also, I know a few 360 owners who bought at least four or five games in an 8 month period and way more recently with a lot more great games coming out in the last few months. Just the same, I only bought two Wii game so far, but I know some fanatics buying 10 games for it.

The thing is, for me, with the PS3 I can at least say "there's GT, FFXIII, MGS4, etc." even if it was two years away. It's the feeling of a guarantee from third-party developers that there's something on the way and that I can see it. Maybe it's because of NDAs, lack of announcements, or something (or worse, developers didn't expect big Wii sales so as far as plans go they got nothin) but I'm not seeing anything for me in the horizon, or even the far far horizon. The feeling is like being stuck in traffic and there's this big container truck right in front of you and you can't see pass a meter in front of you. It's the feeling of uncertainty. You can even hit a big pothole if you're not careful. Now if you can see Disneyland just a kilometer away then you can at least feel that victory is almost at hand. If you think waiting for a release date is painful, just imagine waiting for the only game you want but don't know whether it's happening or not and multiply that by multiple games. It's like finally getting Twin Snakes on the Cube and not knowing, just hoping that the sequels come too.

Pretty much a neck and neck race between 360 and Wii at this point. PS3 seems to have yet to regain steam though.

And more people needs to buy and experience Viva Pinata. For serious.

So far Wii is doing well without any heavy hitters. Theres no point in releasing a triple A title when units arent sitting on the shelves as is.

From a business perspective, you might wait and use them as hardware sales boosters as needed.

"No, it wouldn't. Halo 3 in September is a good reason to keep the prices exactly where they are. The game is going to sell regardless of the pricing of the 360."

not to mention the fact that if they can get away without dropping the price until then, its close enough to christmas that they can stretch it out until 2008 for the first price drop.

either they will drop the price soon (within 3 - 4 months) or it will stay where it is til 2008, but thats just a guess.

Bitching about the lack of games on the Wii right now is EXACTLY the same thing as announcing to the world that you are a complete gaming NEWBIE. Either that or you can't even remember back as little as one freaking year. Pathetic.

As somebody who owned the Xbox 360 a few days before it was released to the public (Mt. Dew contest winner) I can tell you that there was almost NOTHING worth playing except for 2 or 3 games for the better part of 8 months.

And show me all these l33t games out for the PS3 that I must be missing? That system must be totally loaded with awesome games. That's why it's getting out sold by a freaking GAME BOY ADVANCE.

So welcome to the world of games my friends.

No kidding. Long live Looking Glass. In fact, someone just asked me to "borrow" my copy of Shock2 yesterday.

"Too Human probably won't see release this year anyway BTW."

It will probably end up jumping platforms *again* in a few years. Denis Dyack is a nice guy, but c'mon...If 3D engines were treated as "platforms" in the same way consoles were, this thing would be giving Daikatana a run for its money. At least it isn't over-hyped.

Bidingtime, you are forgetting about Lost Odyssey and Eternal Sonata. Those two games are Japanese RPGs as well and they both come out this year in the US. I also like how you threw the "sci-fi" in there to discount Mass Effect and Too Human both of which don't fall into the traditional "X-box is only for shooters" archtype. Too Human probably won't see release this year anyway BTW.

everyone beforehand thought ps3 was the sure bet so started their projects early on it. and no one thought "revolution" would be very big given gc's relative failure, so skipped (and got info late). that explains 3rd party support at this point, but i imagine after the holidays a lot of publishers held meetings to re-assess the situation.

as for zelda tp, given its launch status i expect it will be one of wii's best-selling titles for the life of the system. look at luigi's mansion for instance, it consistently sold very well, and hitting the budget-line didn't hurt.

Awesome 360 games this year:
Forza 2
Mass Effect
Halo 3
Too Human
GTA 4
Blue Dragon
EDF 2017

Awesome 360 games this year that appeal to people who don't already love Xbox:
Blue Dragon

There's no doubt that 360 is going to have a great lineup this year...probably the best of the three - if you love sci-fi and guns. I think 360 is going to have a decent year, but I'm not expecting it to be huge. Heck, these hardware sales support that. Why is PS2 STILL outselling 360?

That E3 got downsized and moved from May to July? I think that is widely known at this point. Side note, if Halo is really hitting in September. It would be a good point for a 360 price drop. A price drop combined with the 360 incredible lineup for this year could cause the systems sales to explode in the US and Europe.

360 is very close to Wii, even after being more time in the market. I think it is due to Wii shortage, I cannot find any Wii in the nearest Gamestop store, they fly away the same day the consoles arrive to the store.

Wii and PS3 are still in their first 6 months after release. The 360 had this period last year, too. There wasn't any AAA 360 title (maybe Condemned) until Oblivion came out in May.

Another aspect contributing to the Wii's seeming lack of support is the whole stock thing in Japan where Nintendo wasn't allowed to reveal anything new. That will change, I'm sure, in the next several weeks.

questworld 3.16.2007 at 02:30:12 AM
Unforgiving, I agree. I wish the Wii had something like that from third-parties. Why do you suppose that is? I mean the PS3 already has quite a lot of high profile titles announced in the last year but I'm hard pressed to say the same for the Wii. I'm not saying the games out now are necessarily bad, but I do feel really underwhelmed. I'm not seeing mutliple standouts. REUC, FFCB, Treasure Island Z perhaps but nothing solid. Lack of info perhaps? Man I hope they didn't take this wait and see approach too far. I hope they show something major at E3.

I'd say Micosoft and Nintendo will have an equally strong year. Sony will do medium or weak and might have a chance of gaining momentum after year or more, or they will give up on the game market. Sony hasn't been doing well in its other markets either.

And the 360 software blitzkrieg begins. With all due respect to Wii and PS3 fans, the 360 is going to own the 2007 NA software sales charts. From now until the end of the year:

Forza 2
Mass Effect
Halo 3

GTA 4

Plus the already released stuff that's tearing it up: Lost Planet, Gears, Crackdown. It boggles the mind.
