News - Sega announces Ghost Squad (lightgun game) for Wii

Posted by Josh Freund at 03:49:56 PM EST on 5.10.2007.

Sega today announced the first arcade-to-Wii game in the form of Ghost Squad, a lightgun title. Originally released back in 2004, the game was a hit with arcade-goers and was Sega's top-earning arcade game in 2005.

The Wii version will include the full arcade game, plus some additional modes, including multiplayer for up to four players. Sega is also promising lots of unlockables, including different routes, "player choice scenarios," weapons, and costumes.

The story here isn't anything really important - you play as a member of your typical elite Special Forces unit called Ghost Squad. Throughout the game, you'll tackle top-secret missions that involve taking on terrorists, defusing bombs, and protecting the President, among other things. The story mode contains three missions, each made up of multiple levels. Occasionally, you'll be given choices as to which way to go and what to do that help add some non-linearity to the game.

Now, with this being a Wii title, the question of control is sure to arise. A lightgun-style shell attachment for the Wiimote has long been talked about, but don't assume that such a device will surface. According to Sega, the game will use "only the Wii remote."

“Ghost Squad brings the classic light gun blaster experience that SEGA made popular in the arcades to the Wii,” said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Marketing, SEGA of America, Inc. “With a more robust multiplayer experience than even the arcade version and numerous unlockable items and stages adding replay value, Ghost Squad will be the ultimate shooter experience for the Nintendo Wii console.”

Look for Ghost Squad to be released this holiday season.

Square(Enix) is the only other company I know of that will sit down, analyze a piece of hardware, then make a game for it that looks great and pushes said hardware to its limit. Capcom does every now and then, but not to the extent Square will.

Do remember this is based off of an arcade game. If it was a brand new game, you'd get a better looking game. We know the Wii can do good graphics, it just up to developers to find the creative will, to work within the Wii's limits, and take their eyes off what 360 and PS3 can do, for a while. I'd buy this. I feel developers are already making the Wii look like kiddy fodder again like GC.

I would like to see Sega go back to its roots and remake the Virtua Cop series for Wii as a compilation, kind of like what Capcom have done with RE:UC.

I own Time Crisis II and play it religiously.

This looks better (though not PS3 better) than anything the last gen ever did. It only looks cheap because well-designed on-rail shooters cut out a lot of visual clutter in trade for better gameplay.

Don't anyone kid yourself, the graphics suck. Looks like 1st year PS2 graphics. Face it Wii owners (as i am on too) studio's just aren't trying to put out good graphics on the wii. RE4 which came out 2 years ago looks better than this. Art style is the only explanation for bad graphics (ie. katamari, elebits) I'm realy dissapointed with Wii developers.

Lightgun won't happen. The arcade version has an "action button" that requires clicking when certain things happen, like cutting bombs wires, or knife fights. I think it'll be fine with just the Wiimote, but Nintendo needs to mobilize their asses and get that cradle out.

Hmm, all things considered, pretty good graphics, though it could use a bit more anti-aliasing.

I know it's looking unlikely, but I hope they release a lightgun for this thing. Or barring that, they take the time to really polish the Wiimote controls.

I'd like to see another Manhunt or such game. In addition to aiding the image of the Wii, it also needs to be some game that would just really get on Thompson's nerves so that it would also provide more ammo for that gun he keeps shooting himself in the foot with.

IMO, though Jack Thompson is protesting the Wii for getting Manhunt 2, the more adult and violent games like this that the Wii gets the better. I mean, it's not like we're going to get less kids games on the Wii, and I'm all for those games. I just don't want the Wii being associated with only "kiddie" games like the Gamecube was.

I can just imagine the conversations that have already been taking place in the industry. "We'll release adult game 'X' with a billion-dollar budget on PS3 and XBOX 360 with a portable version going to PSP, and then release Barbie's Make-up Application Funtime on the Wii with a $10,000 budget and 3 month development cycle on the Wii."

This is the type of thing I bought a Wii for. Sort of. But yeah this is awesome.

This took about six months longer to announce than I thought it would.

Woohoo! My hopes that the Wii would become a great place for lightgun games is one step further along.

I played this at a local arcade and it was pretty fun. It really did have a lot of neat features. Unfortunately I only got to play it twice before the arcade went under.

Awesome! Along with 2D space shooters, light gun games are the genre that I'll buy pretty much anything.

All right, finally. Go Sega. They'll get my money instead of Namco shirking out on TC4 at the last minute.

Try playing the shooting gallery in Super Paper Mario and then tell me that that isn't A. very accurate or B. extremely fun.

And honestly, it can't be that hard to create some form of a calibration feature.

The arcade game was a lot of fun, though part of it had to do with the controller, which was shaped like an assault rifle. It had a couple of nifty features in it, like a switch for switching fire rate and accurate recoil that helped make it a more fun experience.

It'd be sweet if they made a special attachment for the Wiimote for this. All it'd really need was some form of force feedback and a couple of buttons and a trigger, along with a space to hook the Wiimote into.

I wonder what price point they'll shoot for. I rarely see an arcade port sell at full price unless it includes some sort of peripheral.

Pretty cool, if I do say so myself.

Anyone here played the arcade version?
