Considering how poorly the original Xbox did in Japan, the 360 getting a 1/4 of the sales of the PS3 isn't that bad.

I work at the Source and we have 2 ps3's in stock now. One of which has been there for months. We are yet to sell a ps3. We randomly get wiis in stock now and then and they are gone within an hour EVERY TIME.

rurounizel: Actually, it's not even an 8-1 ratio. The PS3 did better against the Wii this week than last, although barely. And it's not like an 8-1 ratio is anything to brag about on Sony's end anyway.

Have you ever seen the simpsons... Where homer does the bbq, and lisa takes the hog? they chase after it screaming, "it's still good, it's still good", well, that's the ps3.

"it's low on exclusives it's still good it's still good", "they haven't figured out the cell yet, it's still good it's still good", "sales are low but they'll pick up..." etc.

I think the ps3 is gone. but just like there was hope for the gamecube when it was released, and maybe some large titles would spur buyers to spend, we wont know the trouble sony is in until a couple large titles are released. If sales stay strong after an AAA release, or if they dip down like the 360 after blue dragon will determine whether sony floats or sinks.

PS3 could still do okay. I don't see it ever taking first place back in Japan, and it's certainly set to lose a lot of marketshare elsewhere in the world, but it's possible for it to be the Sony equivalent of GameCube or N64...if Sony can figure out a way to be profitable with those types of sales.

Make no mistake, I believe Wii is set for first place in Japan, and eventually the world, but PS3 could still turn out to be a worthwhile console.

The race between PS3 and 360 should be interesting to watch this year. Will the massive shift from PS3 exclusives to multiplatform titles give Microsoft the boost it needs to finally start outpacing the original Xbox? Or will Sony's previously-massive fanbase start buying PS3s once some good games finally start coming out?

"That won't happen and it better not. Or Wii owners are left with nothing more then a last gen console. The controller is what makes the Wii next gen."

I'll definitely support traditional controllers for Wii games. I chose the Wii as my system because of the great games I see set for it, and the Virtual Console, with the controller as an afterthought. Games are primary, controller is secondary. If you've got a great game idea, use the control scheme that works better. As for that making the Wii "last gen," I don't consider HD graphics to make the other systems current gen. Aside from online content, they're delivering games that could have had uglier versions of them made on the saturn, so the gaming realm has been in the same generation for about 10 years as far as I'm concerned.

Wii - 101,320 (-1,202)
5. PS3 - 12,974 ( 183)

Sony, you need to do something fast. That's nearly a 10 to 1 ratio Nintendo's got going there. Clearly you need to release a major title NOW.

The PS3 is basically turning into Sony's N64. There's no better way to describe it.

darc requiem: Except for the fact that the X360 has a larger library in general than the PS3, so of course people would buy more games for it.
The PS3 is still largely in its launch months. When there's a big release (especially something like a JRPG), you'll see software sales go up. It took the PSP a long time in Japan to get anywhere, but it's starting to kick in. You may have noticed that there's a distinct influx in PSP release announcements by big-name developers that wasn't there previously.

The delusions of the PS3 fateful astound me. Its one thing for your system to sell poorly its another thing entirely for it to sell poorly and for its software to sell even worse. The 360 is getting obliterated by the PS3 sales in Japan, yet its selling more software. Why would developers continue churn out PS3 games in Japan if its selling less sofware than a system that has 40% of its userbase? Japan is the only region in which the PS3 leads the 360 in sales. The whole reason developers chose the PS3 over the 360 in Japan was because they were supposed to be able to sell more games on PS3 than 360. Thats not been the case thus far. The PS3 faithful have pounded the 360 for its lack of Japanese focused software, but yet its selling more software than the PS3. Sony needs to get their butts in gear. Its sad when PS3's biggest title in Japan, Gundam Musou, has sold half of what Namco expected and is being ported to 360. Sony better have a HUGE holiday season in all territories if they want the PS3 to remain a relevant platform.

Say what? As a Wii owner i'm certainly _hoping_ that will happen! To throw around an oft-quoted but who knows how accurate figure, it's twice as powerful as the GameCube, so it's not like it's not any kind of improvement at all over the last generation. Sure it could theoretically have been 4-8 times as powerful according to Moore's law, but i have no problem with Nintendo having split the difference between price, performance, and new features.

The ability to use the wii remote as a new method of input should be a bonus that can be taken advantage of if one wishes, not a sentence one has to endure!

I'm thinking Wii could sell closer to DS if it was plentifully stocked.

But whoa, the PS3 figure is just pathetic. Ecureuil saying that PS3 will be fine is really strange, because the console is dead in the water. If it really does this badly for _two years_, then there isn't any coming back for the console anymore, ever. It's not like it's the only traditional HD console either, as we've seen from Last Remnant coming to Xbox 360 and Star Ocean 4 suggested for multiplatform as well. Support has _shifted_ in favor of the 360, which is winning the worldwide HD war, while Wii is coming out on top of the HD consoles combined. The PS3 ain't a slow burner - it's getting burned fast!

This week was definitely historic. I know we would have never imagined this numbers for the Nintendo consoles, and we cannot see what will happen in one year. Maybe the numbers will be doubled or will stay the same... who knows.

I definitely don't think the PS3 will be better in one year, not even in 2, 3, or 4.

I know it is hard to believe that the succesor of a massive success like the PS2 is now worse than the looser of the last-gen battle, but believe it. This nwe console maybe is selling a little hardware, but the software is not seling.

Nintendo is now the leader again in Japan, there is no doubt, it is more clear than water.

In one year we will see what happens in the rest of the world.

What happens if developers start making traditional controller games for the Wii via the GameCube or Wii Classic controllers however? That would leave HD as Sony's one truly significant advantage.

I can't wait until the Sony spin finally stops. The PS3 is getting mauled like no major console ever before. The Gamecube, which Sohy fans called a massive failure, was far, far ahead of where the PS3 is now.

PS3 will be absolutely fine. It won't be posting massive sales figures for at least a few years, but it's well supported and there's nothing to worry about. The radical difference between PS3 and Wii hardware has worked in Sony's favour, as developers won't be moving PS3 titles over to Nintendo's console as there will always be a demand for traditional controller/HD games. PS3 is a slow burner, but it will get there in the end.

Big jump for the PS3....

The DS Lite is a phenomenal success. I highly doubt we'll see anything that can sell this well in such an extended period around the globe for quite some time. Another 1/4 million week. I'm impressed.

The fact that the DS is outselling the PSP by a factor of about 8:1 is impressive. However the fact that for the past two weeks the _growth_ of the DS has outpaced that of the PSP by an average factor of about 20:1 is astounding! I don't imagine that's something that can be kept up for long, but amazing while it lasts!

Uh, the Wii dropoff isn't that big of a deal. It still managed to sell 100,000+ units plus a 2nd week in a row. That's still good in my book.

And good grief, there ain't no stopping the DS.

Weird to see Wii sales down for Golden Week (when software sales are strong). I wonder if's a stock issue, or if it's just that a lot of the software was bought by people who already have Wiis. I'm guessing it's the former.
