News - E3 2004: Sega has an "explosive announcement"

Posted by Richard Brownell at 09:17:36 PM EST on 4.29.2004.

Sega today made its intentions clear. It has invited all press attending E3 to go to a special event as soon as the show doors open. Of course, press jumped on the opportunity and now you can't even RSVP to be there. Their room is simply full.

It doesn't take much thought to delve into the obvious yet unlikely explosive announcement: a return to hardware. The Dreamcast, while unquestionably a system that was a success in terms of the quality of its games, was by no means a success in sales. Sega went into software and nobody has any expectations for them to return to the hardware business. Even if they were, such an overcrowded market with companies like Infinium Labs trying to cut their own niche and the next generation of major consoles to be unveiled this year, it might not be the best time for a company like Sega to push into hardware again.

So, if it isn't hardware, what is it? We here at GAF would certainly like to see another Panzer Dragoon Saga, perhaps a sequel to NiGHTS, or even another Jet Set Radio. But unless these three are all being announced at once, it could hardly be called an explosive announcement.

We here at GAF aren't sure what to make of it, but if you have any ideas, write to the mailbag or head on over to our forums to discuss it.
